 EMI1.1

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 EMI1.1

To reduce the harmful space in the case of pressure equalization valves installed for idling locomotives, a valve is installed at each end of the circulation channel, which is kept closed by the boiler pressure when the regulator is open, but opens when the regulator is closed and thus enables pressure equalization on both cylinder sides. With those known for this purpose
Valves, the shut-off element is either under the action of springs striving to open it or the changing pressures in the cylinder, which results in the valve striking, or the cylinder and valve body have pressure equalization valves built into a recess in the cylinder housing away from the circulation duct from the outset. Such valves are not suitable for retrofitting to running machines.

The perpendicular mounting of the shut-off element, which is extremely favorable for reducing wear, cannot then be used either.

According to the invention, the shut-off device is installed in a special chamber of the circulation channel widened at the ends in order to achieve large passage cross-sections. Despite the large passage cross-sections, this results in a relatively small housing for any subsequent attachment to existing machines.

The fluttering of the shut-off element can be prevented by using the counter-piston known from pressure equalization valves installed in the middle of the circulation channel, which in these known cases is exposed to the changing pressures on one side of the cylinder in the associated branch of the circulation channel, whereas it is exposed to the according to the invention chosen arrangement outside the
The area of these changing pressures comes to rest. Accordingly, the closed shut-off device is also not influenced by these changing pressures.

Such valves should in general act automatically, that is, they should produce the free equalization of the pressure when the regulator is switched off without the driver having to do anything special. On the other hand, free circulation of the steam between the two cylinder sides is often particularly desirable if the cylinders are to be preheated when the machine is ready. This requires that all cylinder parts be heated as evenly as possible. In order to give the leader a free hand and to make the setting of the pressure compensation organs at his discretion, according to a further feature of the invention, the space above the opposing piston of the shut-off element is connected to a pressure line, so z. B. to the boiler or to the compressed air line.

The driver can now open both pressure equalization valves at the cylinder ends by turning on the pressure, so that the relatively low tension steam that is let in for heating finds its way through the cylinder, the valve body and the circulation channel and thus ensures that all parts are preheated evenly.

The invention can also be used for a horizontally installed shut-off device. It is then expedient to guide it in a known manner on a firmly mounted piston. In the known valves of this type, the shut-off device is open at the rear and closed in front of the piston. This creates a buffer space between the two, the pressure conditions of which are beyond the control of the driver because the shut-off device can only be controlled in the direction towards the end. According to a further feature of the invention, the shut-off element is open in front of the piston, whereas it is behind him on his

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

Rod with a closed bottom leads tightly.

As a result, a cavity is created between the piston and the shut-off element, which can be connected to the outside air or to a pressure line, so that
 EMI2.1
is exposed to full boiler pressure and its remaining pressure surface is under the pressure in the cylinder.
When the regulator is closed, the shut-off element with its effective surfaces leaves the area of the gasp flowing through the two valves of a cylinder and the circulating duct connecting them. e, so that fluttering of the shut-off devices is prevented.

The pressure prevailing in the circulation channel on the inside of the opposing piston connected to the shut-off element can be dispensed with, so that only the outside air or compressed air can act on the other side of the opposing piston and thus the shut-off element when the regulator is closed. This is achieved by installing the shut-off element in the chamber of the circulation channel in its axis and transversely to the connection piece on the cylinder.
 EMI2.2
cut. FIGS. 2 to 5 show other exemplary embodiments of the individual valve, also in longitudinal section.

The housing a of each valve (Fig. 1) is attached with its flange c directly on the cylinder or on the valve body. Each side of the cylinder or valve body is equipped with a valve. The housings a each two such valves are connected to the flange c by the umlaut tube cf! connected. The shut-off element e closes in the direction of the flange c or the circumferential duct c 'and its rear side is under the action of the steam in the valve body, for which purpose a pipe d coming from this is connected to the housing a so that the steam is behind the shut-off device can enter chamber &. i is an annular channel on the circumference of the shut-off member e.

A counter-piston is connected to the shut-off element. The space above is either under the influence of outside air or is connected to a compressed air or steam line n. The piston / has approximately the same pressure surface as the shut-off element on its side facing the circulation channel.

When the regulator is opened, the shut-off element e is closed by the steam pressure in the valve body in the pipe tl. If the locomotive runs empty, then both shut-off devices e open under the effect of the alternating overpressures on both cylinder sides or in the valve body and the outside air acting on the piston j or the effect of the compressed air.

Line n leads either to the steam boiler or to the compressed air tank and contains one
Hahn, so that the driver can pressurize the opposing pistons of all pressure equalization valves at will and keep the shut-off devices in the open position at any time with low valve body pressure, even if he is to preheat the cylinders and valve bodies
The regulator has ventilated a little and thereby also put the shut-off elements e under low pressure. The steam let in for preheating is then full on both sides of the piston in the cylinder
Compensation.

The connection of the valves to a pressure line also gives the guide the option of using the
In the event of danger, to suddenly open the shut-off devices and to equalize the pressure on both cylinders, in order to avoid work on the cylinder side filled with steam at this moment.

The embodiment according to FIG. 2 is similar to that just described except for the design of the shut-off element e as a differential piston. In this case, the shut-off element has a paragraph e '.

The cavity k in front of it stands through the channel i! with the outside air in connection, which supports the rapid opening of the valve body e by acting on the shoulder e '. Also in this
Trap, the same effect could be achieved by compressed air.

Also in the example in Fig. 3, the valve housing a has a connector b for connection to the
Valve body or to one end of the cylinder and a connection piece e for connecting the circulation pipe c ″ to the other cylinder side. The shut-off element e, which seals on the seat o, is located in the housing a

with the outside air. The space h behind the shut-off element is connected to the steam line cl. The shut-off element is open at the front and closed behind the piston f1 by a base r and its hollow shaft e ″ guides itself on the hollow piston rod j1 '.

If the regulator is open, then the steam entering through the pipe d presses the shut-off element e onto its seat o and blocks the connection between the two cylinder ends. If the regulator is switched off, then on the one hand the shifting pressure surges on the cylinder sides against the shoulder q of the shut-off element e and, on the other hand, the predominant atmospheric pressure in space k compared to the negative pressures occurring in space h pushes the shut-off element e and thus releases the pressure

in relation to the two cavities k and h with the outside air, due to the relatively small openings Itl and m, cannot suddenly occur.

The channel m connects the cavity A with the cavity behind the shaft e.

In this valve, too, the hollow piston rod 11 can be connected to a live steam or compressed air line instead of to the outside air.

The valve according to FIG. 4 combines the vertical mounting and the design of the shut-off device as a differential piston. On its underside it has the middle pressure area s' and the ring area s ".

The shaft / carrying the middle pressure surface s' leads as a piston in a housing sleeve a ".

When the regulator is open, the shut-off devices on both ends of the cylinder close under the effect of the steam pressure entering through the line d, which acts on the surface s', and under the effect of the changing pressure prevailing in the cylinder, which is applied to the annular surface s " .
