Abstract

The invention relates to a process for treating waste materials such as sludges and dusts which comprise heavy metals, pathogenic microbes and/or other pollutants and organic constituents, in which the waste materials are mixed with a concentrated mineral acid to achieve a pH of zero and are then mechanically separated into a solid phase and a liquid phase, the liquid phase is adjusted to a pH of about 7 by addition of lime and the resultant precipitated-out solids are mechanically separated off and optionally supplied to a landfill or to further processing, and the remaining liquid phase is separated osmotically into pure water and into residual water comprising various constituents, which residual water is fed to the solid phase from the first mechanical separation and the resultant suspension is if appropriate further treated.
