Abstract
A process for working up waste acids (pickling liquors) from hot galvanizing plants and electroplating operations is described. These acids contain essentially Zn2+, Fe2+, Fe3+ and free hydrochloric acid. The purpose of the process is to produce the two main metal components Zn2+ as ZnCl2 or ZnSO4 and Fe2+/Fe3+ as FeCl2/FeCl3 separately in a concentration higher than the starting concentration and/or in a particular purity. The process used for this purpose is solvent extraction (liquid-liquid extraction) in a mixer-settler plant. Before the waste acid is subjected to extraction, it should be filtered through suitable adsorbents to remove surfactants and, subsequently, Fe3+ should be reduced to Fe2+. The extraction is carried out in two stages: in the first process section A (Figure 1) Zn2+ is removed from the waste acid and Fe2+ is removed in the second process section B (Figure 2). Each extraction stage is followed by a strip (reextraction). In this way, the ion exchanger is regenerated at the same time and can then be reused for the respective extraction. <IMAGE>
