Abstract

Infrared light barriers or video control systems are used, as is known, in monitoring bounded, plane areas, for example a level crossing. However, both solutions have the disadvantage that they are unreliable or are of a very complicated design. The invention provides a video control system which permits reliable evaluation using simple means. For this purpose, a camera is used to take and store two fields in each case, one being taken without flash, and the other with. A differential image, now containing only signal components caused by the light of the flash is obtained from the two fields. Given the presence of a three-dimensional object in the monitored area, there is produced on the side of the object averted from the flash a shadow signal which is evaluated and, if necessary, fed to the alarm-triggering device. <IMAGE>
