Abstract

In a method for cooling a charge of workpieces during a heat treatment process by means of gas cooling, the parameters governing the cooling process, for example cooling gas velocity and cooling gas pressure, are set as a function of temperatures determined during the cooling process. The cooling of the charge of workpieces is to be controlled in such a way that the desired heat treatment result is obtained on a predetermined workpiece cross-section, without temperature measurements being required at this or another point of the workpiece. For this purpose, the temperatures (T1, T2, T3, T0) are detected by means of at least one measuring probe, arranged in the charge chamber, of defined geometry and defined material. By means of a computer, the temperature/time curve in the workpiece is calculated on the basis of these temperatures (T1, T2, T3, T0) via the determination of the heat flux density and the heat transfer at the measuring probe. By means of a comparator device, the computer carries out a continuous comparison between the actual temperature curve (Tw,actual) calculated in this way and a preset desired temperature curve (Tw,desired). The parameters governing the cooling process are then controlled as a function of the result of this comparison. <IMAGE>
