Abstract

A multi-station automatic machine capable of sewing a gusset to a tubular article, partic. ladies' tights, has a vertical rotatable drum to hold the article during the operation. At the station where the gusset is fed to the drum is a photoelectric sensor which verifies the presence of an article on the drum before the gusset is applied, and prevents the application if the article is absent. At the trimming and sewing stations is a second control device which monitors the rotation of the drum by means of a series of equally-spaced markings around the base of the drum, and ensures that the drum executes a rotation in excess of 360 deg. The sensor at the gusset feed station prevents waste of material by preventing application of a gusset to the drum in the absence of an article thereupon. The second sensor ensures that the gusset is sewn completely around, without any gaps.
