Abstract

The central coupling device (4) is enclosed in a housing (5) under the end portion (2) of the rail vehicle, esp. a tram. The housing has a flat top surface (5b) and a curved front surface (5a) and acts as a buffer or a bumper taking impacts in case of accident and preventing unwanted contact of the coupling with the other vehicle. The buffer assembly is mounted on two struts (6) situated at the sides. Their inner ends inside the tram are connected to two vertical screws (7) with nuts which may be driven by an electric motor. This arrangement enables the buffer to be raised to allow access to the coupling device. <IMAGE>
