Abstract

1. Binder mixture for paper-coating compositions based on aqueous dispersions of from 95 to 70 parts by weight of an emulsion polymer A, which contains acrylate and ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids as copolymerised units, and from 5 to 30 parts by weight of a copolymer B of from 15 to 55% by weight of acrylic acid and/or methacrylic acid, where appropriate up to 10% by weight of acrylamide and/or methacrylamide and from 85 to 45% by weight of other monomers which form water-insoluble homopolymers, at least 20% by weight of these hydrophobic monomers being esters of acrylic acid or methacrylic acid with alcohols which contain from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, wherein copolymer A contains, as copolymerised units, (a) from 80 to 96% by weight of esters of acrylic acid and monohydric C2 -C8 -alcohols, (b) up to 19.5% by weight of styrene, acrylonitrile and/or methylmethacrylate, and (c) from 0.5 to 10% by weight of other monomers which form water-soluble homopolymers.
