A machine (1; 101; 201) for softening surfaces of a continuous circular knitted fabric (2) comprises at least one first row (42) of first rotating roller brushes (43) able to perform a brushing action on a first surface portion (2a) of the fabric, at least one second row (52) of second rotating roller brushes (53) able to perform a brushing action over a second surface portion (2b) of the fabric, and additional rotating roller brushes (38, 38'; 71, 71'; 81, 81') having axes of rotation substantially perpendicular to the first and second surface portion (2a, 2b) of the fabric (2) and able to be engaged with side edges (21, 21') of the fabric (2) in order to perform a brushing action on the edges. <IMAGE>
