Abstract

Process comprises contacting a mixt. of an aromatic cpd. selected from benzene, naphthalene, anthracene, phenanthrene, biphenyl and/or terphenyls, a carboxylic acid (1) and molecular O2 in the liq. phase at 100-300 deg. C with a catalyst composed of Pd-, Sb- and Cr or Mn-acetates, and continuously removing water formed in the process from the reaction mixt. as the aryl ester is formed. (1) is pref. R(COOH)n where n=1 or more, R=5-nC hydrocarbon gp., and is esp. dodecane or ocenoic acid. Aromatic cpd. is continuously added to reaction mixt. as the aryl ester is formed. Ni cpd. in catalyst compsn. is pref. nickel acetate.
