Abstract

Fabric is mercerized after impregnation in a stenter under tension while supported by the stenter pins (14). Additional transverse stretch is applied mechanically near the entrance to the stenter in the edge region (R1), e.g. by intermeshing grooved rollers (4, 5). The region (R1) comprises 2 to 40 % of the fabric width. Additional dilute caustic soda spray (8) is applied in this region (R2) and removed by a suction arrangement (10). An independent claim is included for a device for applying additional mechanical stretch to both edge regions at the stenter entrance, e.g. by intermeshing grooved and ribbed rollers of a width preferably no grater than 5 % of the stenter width. The distance between rollers is adjustable (z) and the grooves are 1.5 to 2.5 times the width of the ribs. Alternative stretching devices can also be used.
