Abstract

A port free container (10) is formed from flexible plastics sheets (12, 14) with a protrusion (22) having an offset portion defining a pocket (26). An insert (28) is received in the pocket (26) and has a bore (44) therethrough whereby a hollow spike (34) which penetrates a flexible wall of the container to communicate with the interior can be inserted in the bore (44) so as to be supported by the insert (28). A removable tape (30) may be adhered to the flexible wall to protect the area to be penetrated from contamination. The arrangement is preferably such that the flexible wall is deformed by the spike (34) to form an annular portion (42) which defines a seal between the spike (34) and the defining wall of the bore (44).
