Abstract

A sewing thread is described which consists of a large number of individual filaments and/or individual fibres. The outer filaments or fibres of the sewing thread are adhesively bonded to one another via binding regions (2a-2b), the binding regions comprising a solidified melt of the polymeric material of the particular sewing thread (1). Sections in which the sewing thread has a bulkier structure compared with the binding regions are provided between the binding regions. Two processes for the production of the sewing thread are also described. In the first process, the sewing thread (1) is exposed to pulsed laser beams so that some of the individual filaments and/or the individual fibres thereof are fused with one another with the formation of essentially spherical binding regions. It is also possible to treat the sewing thread with continuous-wave laser beams, part of the sewing thread being shielded by a perforated mask which is arranged between a laser producing the laser beams and the sewing thread.
