Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain a composition containing a benzalkonium fluoride, capable of completely inhibiting or destroying at least one kind of unicellular organism without causing injurious adverse effects (e.g. irritation or allergy). CONSTITUTION: This composition contains a compound of the formula (R is an 8-18C alkyl) and is applied to humans, animals or plants in order to inhibit or destroy at least one kind of unicellular living organism such as a protozoan, a microbe, a bacterium, a gamete, a fungus, a yeast or a virus. At least one metallic fluoride (preferably lithium fluoride) is preferably contained in the composition. The compound of the formula is produced by reacting stoichiometric amounts of a benzalkonium methyl carbonate with hydrofluoric acid solubilized in an alcohol until the evolution of CO2 gas ceases and then evaporating the residual alcohol under a reduced pressure.
