Abstract

A unit to determine proper placement of a needle tip in a blood vessel when inserting a catheter comprises an elongate cylindrical member with a pointed hollow needle extending from one end, an integral flow channel on the base outer surface extending from one end, an integral flow channel on the base outer surface communicating with the needle at the base end and a vent at the opposite channel end to the needle to vent air as blood enters the channel. The channel is a multi-segment groove, with the segments spaced and each curvilinear transversely of the base and of sufficient depth for free flow of blood. A transparent cover engages and surrounds the base and vent so that the blood flow can be viewed, and is pref. of heat-shrunk material.
