This invention relates to an applicator for applying substances
such as for example to the skin. In one form the invention provides an applicator for applying
a protective substance such as for example suntan oil to the skin
of a user, in a straiqht forward and efficient manner.
Up until this time, when applying suntan lotion and other
substances such as for example protective and/or medicinal sub-
stances to the skin; it has been necessary to obtain tubes of the
substance; to squeeze the tube onto the hand and then to run or
rub the hand over the skin to thus rub the substance into the skin.
It has also been necessary to carry around squeeze tubes or contain-
ers which have often opened or broken and the substance therein has thus spread over adjacent contents and the like. It is an object of this invention to provide a straight
forward and efficient applicator. *o It is a further object of this invention to provide a straight forward and efficient method of forming an applicator.
Other objects of this invention will become apparent from the following description. According to one aspect of this invention there is provided a method of forming an applicator including forming an admixture by mixing together at least oil, and a protective and/or medicinal
substance, dipping at least one pad of foamed and/or porous
material into said admixture; withdrawing the pad(s) from the
admixture and allowing the pad(s) to dry. According to a further aspect of this invention there is
provided an applicator induding a pad of a foamed and/or porous
material, said pad being impregnated with a mixture of at least
oil, and a protective and/or medicinal substance.
Preferably the oil/admixture has a melting point close to
or just below blood temperature so that the normally dried ad-
mixture can be at least partially melted by body heat to assist
in the application of the admixture to the skin. A suitable oil
for this purpose is coconut oil.
The irvention will now be described by way of example only
and it should be appreciated that modifications and improvements
may be made to the invention without departing from the scope or
spirit thereof. In one form of the invention the applicator is in the form
of a suitably cut pad of a foamed and/or porous material, such as
for example polyurethane foam. It will be appreciated that it is
necessary to have a foamed or porous material, so that the pad may be impregnated with suitable admixtures, as will hereinafter be
described.
The pads may be cut to any desired shape, configuration and size, to suit requirements of the market and user.
A suitable admixture is provided and is formed with an oil
base, such as for example purified coconut oil, which is heated and
melted. For example, in one form of the invention, the coconut oil is melted at 40 C although this is by way of example only. To the melted coconut oil is added a suitable perfume or essence,
such as to make the mixture pleasant in smell and to counter-act
a smell of coconut oil. In one form of the invention about 3% by
weight of perfume or essence is added. Any suitable perfume or
essence may be added, such as for example honeysuckle, strawberry,
raspberry, musk and the like. These are by way of example only
and it should be appreciated that -ny perfume or essence can be
used.
To this admixture is added a suitable medicinal and/or
protective substance. For example, if a pad is to be used for applying suntan lotion
or a suntan substance to the skin, then a suitable suntan lotion, such as for example a powder paramino benzoic acid may be added.
In other forms of the invention, where the applicator may be used
to apply medicinal and/or other protective substances to the skin,
then such other substances may be added in suitable proportions. In the preferred form of the invention therefore, the coconut oil, perfume or essence and paramino benzoic acid are mixed together
in a suitable hopper or container in the presence of heat (for? example 40°C) until they are mixed sufficiently.
The admixture is maintained at a suitable temperature so that
the coconut oil is maintained in a melted or fluid condition, and
15; as stated above by way of example, a heat of substantially 40 C
may be applied to the ontainer while the mixing is taking place. The admixture is then held at this temperature and one or more applicator pads are then placed and dipped into the admixture
so that the admixture permetrates the porous or foamed material. The pads are then removed and are placed over a suitable drip tray,
such as on suitable racks and the like, and during this period the admixture within the foamed pad dries and forms an integral part
of the pad.
Suitable packaging such as for example plastic bags and the
like can then be provided and passed about the pads to hold them
in a condition ready for use.
In use, one or more pads are taken out of a bag or container
and are placed in contact with the skin and the body heat will
apply itself to the dried admixture within the pad which will cause the admixture to melt slightly to enalle the admixture to be rubbed and spread onto and into the skin. It should be appreciated that this invention has been described by way of example only and that improvements and modifications may be made tc the invention without departing from the scope thereof, as defined by the appended claims.
