Description
THIS INVENTION 2eae tb improvements in the coating of
surfaces and is an improvement in or modification of the invention described and claimed in Australian Patent Spec- ification No. 260,957.
The aforesaid specification describes and claims a process of coating surfaces which comprises spraying a coating of metal or ceramic material onto the surface by means of a conventional metal spraying process at a temperature between
F and 270 0F and whilst the surface is still at a temper- ature above 800 F applying a thermosetting resin.
It has now been found that the thermosetting resin as well as a thermoplastic resin may be applied to the sprayed- surface after it has cooled to ambient temperaturedH
Thus the present invention resides in a process of coating surfaces which comprises spraying a coating of metal or ceramic material onto the surface by means of a conventional metal spraying process at a temperature between 90OF and 270OF and after the sprayed surface has cooled to ambient ato.P4& 80 "F temperature, applying a thermoplastic or thermosetting resin-thereto.
The process may be applied to various types of surfaces such as metal, wood or hardboard as well as cer-amic surfaces _and-the material sprayed thereon may be any metal which -can-be-used-f-or-conventional metal .spraying processes, such as zinc, copper, aluminium, monel metal, stainless steel,

22 197 bronze, tin, babbit metal, nickel chrome or a ceramic material -ahich is readily available in powder form such as Ceramic Powder 101 marketed by TMetco. The thickness of the material tc be applied to the surface may vary from .001 to .125 of an inch in thickness. The temper- ature at which the operation can be carried out will de- pend on the material to be applied to the surface and in general will range from 90 F to 270 0 F.
Various types of resins may be applied over the sprayed metal surface and include epoxy resins- to which a required amount of a hardener has been added or phenolic resins or a vinyl resin. In the case of vinyl resins it is essential that the surface to which they are applied be at ambient temperature as if it was hot there may be'a tendency to produce toxic vapours.
If desired the sprayed surface may be treated with a self- etching primer accelerator or a zinc chromate primer before the resin is applied.
