FORM 10 REGULATION 13(2) COMMONEALTH OF AUSTRALIA PATENTS ACT 1952-1969
The following statement is a full description of this invetion, including the best method of performing it known. tQo 11s:-

This invention is directed to improvements in
electronic tachometers, one objective being the provision of such tachometers wherein means are provided for initiating external functions at one or more various predetermined and adjustable speeds. An electronic tachometer in accordance with
this invention comprises a-timing circuit, means for applying to the timing circuit pulses representative of the rotational speed to be measured, means for averaging the said pulses, a So.: 10 buffer circuit, and-means responsive to the attainment or non-. So attainment of at least one predetermined rotational speed to initiate a function. o
S° An electronic tachometer in accordance with a further development of this invention includes means for indi-
cating continuously the rotational speed to be measured.
o SThe invention will now be explained with refer- S°.ence to the accompanying diagram, which shows one example of an electronic tachometer in accordance with this invention. It
is assumed that electrical pulses' representative of the rotat- ional speed to be measured are present at terminal 1. These pulses are applied to a timing circuit 2, which may by way of
example comprise a DC set-reset bistable circuit coupled to a "capacitor run-up" monostable circuit. The use of a bistable circuit ensures that the calibration and accuracy of the novel arrangement is not affected by the magnitude of the pulses applied through terminal 1, with the normal proviso that for any circuit, there will be a maximum pulse amplitude that can- not be exceeded. The pulse duration must naturally be shorter than the period set by the timer arrangement itself. The "capacitor run-up" type of circuit is very advantageous for
2 a *^*laiS"l^*lTLl-la' MM^Ml this application, as it can be made immune to variations in the power supply provided to energise the arrangement, rendering the use of a regulated power supply unnecessary. The output of the bistable circuit 2 is applied to an averaging circuit 3, the function of which is to provide a steady signal representative of the rotational speed being measured. The output of the averaging circuit is in turn applied to a buffer circuit 4, the function of which is to protect the circuit as described so far against the loading effects of other circuit elements which are to be connected. to *0
S In the exemplary arrangement shown, a number of functions is 0 performed by the trrangement, and these will be described in
turn. Firstly and in accordance with this invention there is
0oo o provided means responsive to the attainment or non-attainment as the case may be of at least one predetermined rotational speed to initiate a function. By way of example there is pro-
ided a voltage comparator 5, typically a Schmitt trigger circuit, to one input of which is applied the averaged signal
from the averagi.ng circuit via the buffer circuit. To the other input of the voltage comparator there is applied a reference voltage, which may be a preset adjustable voltage, applied to the terminal 6. At rotational speeds lower than the predetermined speed, the voltage comparator will exhibit one condition, whilst at rotational speed higher than the pre- determined speed, the voltage comparator will exhibit a second and alternative condition. This change of condition may be used to operate a relay, light a lamp or otherwise control an external function.
This invention is not concerned with the nature of the external functio1 controlled in this way. Typical applications would include the initiation of warning or stopping procedures when the rotational speed being monitored rose to an unacceptable value. The diagram'shows a further voltage comparator 7 and reference voltage terminal 8, the functions of which are analogous v'ith those already described in relation to 5 and 6. They are included-to demonstrate that the invention is not restricted to the use of one such function initiating means. The invention as described so far has been 10 directed to the initiation of one or more functions at predet- oosa o ermined rotational speeds. However, it will be clear that the arrangement is.also capable of providing a continuous indicat- ion of rotational speed. This is readily achieved by connecting to the buffer stage an indicating instrument 9, which may be calibrated as described.
