Address fo: Service is., PHILLIPS, ORMONDE FITZPATRICK Patent anzd Trade Mark Attorneys 37-4 1 Queen Street Melbourne, Australia, 3000 Complete I-pecificatio-, for the invention entitled:
The following statenwunt is a full description of this invention, in'chidfng the t'e't method of performing
I The present invention relates to a new and
improved coupling suitable for joining of members such
as pipes for example plastic pipes.
Plastic pipes such as polyvinylchloride pipes
have recently gained acceptance and are in wide use in
Australia. In many uses for the pipes it is necessary
to allow for relative mbvement, such as relative expansion,
between the pipes and indeed this is required by the
appropriate authorities in the case of soil, waste and vent pipes for example. Difficulties are experienced
however in providing an adequate seal between lengths of
pipes in these circumstEnces. In time dust and grime
collects on the pipes and as movement occurs this is worked
into the joint causing substantial damage of the seal.
The object of the present invention is to provide a coupling and pipe ends suitable therefor that provides a
suitable dust seal to the joint between the pipe ends.
Whilst the present description is given in
relation to a coupling suitable for joining pipes the
invention is not to be taken as limited thereto. The principles of the present invention are applicable to
other members and where reference is made to the pipes in the description that follows the term should be construed
as to include other suitable members.
The present invention provides a pipe end coupling
including:
a female pipe end;
a male pipe end having an entry portion of reduced
diameter with respect to the diameter of the female pipe
end whereby to enable the entry portion to fit within
S: or other witness at h E required the female pipe end; an ring seal between the female pipe end and the male pipe end, said seal being provided within an annular recess in the inner wall of the female pipe end or the outer wall of said entry portion of the male pipe end, whereby to provide a seal between said pipe ends whilst allowing for relative movement therebetween; an annular skirt around the outer wall of the male pipe end and extending in part over the entry portion thereof whereby to provide a sealing gap into which the edge of the female pipe end extends thereby to cover the female pipe end against ingress of foreign material.
The following description refers in more detail
to these essential features and further optional features
of the invention. To facilitate understanding of the invention, reference is made to the accompanying drawings
where these features are illustrated in preferred form.
It is to be understood however, that the essential and optional features of the invention are not limited to the
specific forms of these features as shown in the drawings.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 shows a female and male pipe end
separated to show the preferred construction;
Figure 2 shows the pipe ends of figure 1 in
section and coupled together.
'he coupling -f the presenu invention includes a pair of opposed pipe ends one which will be called a female pipe end 6 and the other which will be called a other witness required
To: The Commissioner of Patents
male pipe end 7. Preferably each of the pipe ends is
substantially cylindrical in formation as shown.
Either the female or male pipe end includes an
annular recess for the ring seal 9. Preferably the
recess 8 is provided in the inner wall of the female pipe
end 6 for this purpose. Any suitable resilien 4 circ. ar
member may be provided for the ring seal 9. For
example a rubber 0-ring seal may be employed. The seal
recess 8 is preferably spaced inwardly from the edge 11 of the female pipe 6. Spaced further inwardly may be a
stop. The stop may be .i the form of an annular shoulder
12 extending around within the inner wall of the female
pipe end and this will be referred to as the inner stop.
The female pipe end may be provided on its
outer surface with an outer shoulder, which is preferably
an annular shoulder 13 located over the seal recess 8 and
in the preferred form is provided by a bend in the female
pipe wall that provides the seal recess 8 on its inner face
and the outer shoulder 13 on its outer face. It is preferred that the outer shoulder 13 be spaced from the edge 11 of the
female pipe end to provide an expansion portion 14 between
the outer shoulder 13 and the edge 11 of the pipe end. A gripping flange 16 may be provided on the outer surface of
the female pipe 6 and spaced further inwardly of the outer
shoulder 13. The gripping flange 16 may also be an annular
flange,
The coupling includes a male pipe end 7 and the
invention also relates to the male pipe end as an ar t icle az such. The male pipe end 7 includes a pipe body having
an entry portion 17 of reduced diameter at one end thereof.
,J
The entry portion 17 is adapted to fit within the female pipe end 6 preferably to a depth at or near the inner annular shoulder 12. Preferably the entry portion 17 abuts with the 0-ring seal 9 to provide a tight fit between the male pipe end and the female pipe end. It will be appreciated that the 0-ring seal recess 8 may be located in the entry portion 17 of the male pipe end 17 rather than in the female pipe end 6 as previously described. But as a matter of convenience it is preferred that the 0-ring s'-al recess be provided in the female pipe end. The male pipe end includes an annular skirt 18 that bends in part over the entry portion 17 and is spaced therefrom by a distance sufficient to provide a sealing gap 19 into which the expansion portion 14 of the female pipe end may extend. Preferably the skirt 18 is joined to the male pipe end at the junction of the entry portGion 17 and the pipe body whereby the pipe body provides in con- junction with the entry portion 17 and the skirt 18 an end wall for the sealing gap 19. Preferably the skirt 18 is of about the same dimension longitudinally of the pipe ends as is the expansion portion 14 of the female pipe end and each is preferably in excess of ill for example in the case of a 41t pipe fitting so that the expansion portion will still
be retained within the sealing gap when an expansion of -is provided for. The coupling and pipe ends may be made of any suitable material. Polyvinylchloride and polypropylene or propylene-ethylene copolymers as well as acrylonitrile- r i
I butadiene-styrene terpolymers are particularly satis-
factory.
The preferred pipe ends will now be further
described with reference to their interrelationship in
use. Details of this should not however be taken as
restricting upon the present invention, Generally the
female pipe end will be fixed and held firm by the
gripping flange 16. To assemble the coupling the entry
portion 17 of the male pipe end 7 is placed within the
female pipe end 6 to engage the O-ring seal 9 and to a
depth sufficient for the skirt 18 to extend over the
expansion portion 14 but leaving an expansion space
between the outermost elge 21 of the skirt 18 and the
outer shoulder 13 on the female pipe end. This provides
for relative movement between the parts proferpbly the
male pipe end 7 being free to move and the female pipe end
6 being fixed. Any dust or grime that falls on the coupling
will rest either on the outer surface of the skirt 18 or
on the outer surface of the expansion portion 14. On
movement some of the dust or grime may enter the sealing
gap 19 being carried by the expansion portion 14. However
the dust or grime will not easily pass around the edge 11
of the female pipe 6 to reach the entry portion 17 of the
male pipe end 7 and the O-ring seal 9 which therefore is
protected satisfactorily.
It will be seen then that the present invention
provides a new and iriproved male pipe end capable of
providing a substantially dust free seal in conjunction
with another pipe end in a coupling and also provides a
superior substantially dust free coupling arrangement.
It will be appreciated of course that various minor
modifications, alterations and additions may be made
to the above described apparatus and arrangement of
parts without departing from the ambit of the present
invention as defined in the claims annexed hereto.
