Claims (1)

  1. The claims defining the invention are as follows:
    This invention relates to detergents.
It is known that the leaves of many plants have some deter-
gent properties when crushed in the hand and moistened. Usually
the detergent property is not marked and is frequently accompan-
    ied by a staining action caused by vegetable dyes in the leaves;
:sometimes too, contact with the leaves or their juices can cause
severe irritation to the human skin.
It has been found that leaves of certain plants possess the
S..10 detergent property in a marked degree yet do not irritate human
skin and after suitable processing do not have a staining action.
The plants to which the invention is applicable include
members of the family Myrtaceae, more especially the genus
Eucalyptus. The following species of the genus Eucalyntus have
been found to be especially suitable: E. obliqua, E.dives,
    E, radiata, E. ovata, E. viminalis, E. regnans, E. citriodora.
In suitable conditions mature trees of these species give
high yields of leaves. After felling mature trees of these species
there is often a vigourous regrowth from the stump that gives a
high yield of leaves in a form suitable for mechanical harvesting.
The material made by the process produces very efficient det-
ergent solutions which are non-foaming, readily bio-degradable,
pleasant smelling and non-staining. Further there are indications
that the material is fungistatic and bacteriostatic. No undesirable
effects on human skin have been noted indeed there may be some
    beneficial soothing effects.
The process of the invention will now be more fully described.
It is preferred that only mature, healthy leaves from the
    trees .efined above are used.
.Aftor harv, sting of the leaves it is preferred that the leaves
I-9- be withered under cover protected from rain and hot sun and then oven dried.
Withering prior to oven drying is regarded as important
because if the green leaves were placed directly in an oven to
dry them volatile substances in the leaves will be lost and the
resultant material has been found to have poorer detergent
properties. Of course the amount of time taken fcr sufficient
withering in air depends upon the climatic conditions at the
time. For instance, during hot dry weather in Victoria a wither-
ing period of say 48 hours is usually sufficient. During cold,
wet weather, however, withering will be much slower and some art-
ificial heat may be necessary but the temperature of the leaves
at this stage should not exceed 40 deg C and air ventilation
speed should not be high, a velocity of about 5 km per hour
    being preferred.
After withering the leaves are dried for approximately 1 hour
in an oven temperature of not more than 60 deg C otherwise the
    leaves will be scorched.
After oven drying the leaves are ground or hammermilled and o* e 20 then passed through a fine sieve with about 225 meshes to the
sq cm to produce a fine pewder. Any residue on the sieve is
reground till it passes the sieve.
The powder produced by the process above may be simply
added to water to produce a detergent solution as required. For
instance 5 ml of the powder may be well mixed into about
1 of hot water to produce a very effective domestic detergent
solution which is quite suitable for washing household dishes,
glass and cutlery either manually or in a dishwashing machine.
Alternatively a concentrated, stock detergent solution may
be made from the powder by boiling 28 g in 568 ml of water for
I" about 5 minutes and straining off the clear liquid. It has been found that the addition of 1 ml acetic acid to the mixture of powder and water befare boiling adds to the effectiveness of the product as a detergent and improves its shelf life.
This stock solution is light brown in colour and has a
pleasant odour. Addition of 10 ml of this stock solution
to about 5 1 of hot water produces a detergent solution
suitable for domestic purposes such as dish washing.
Many variations are possible in the process described
above without departing from the spirit and scope of the
    no invention.
