Abstract

A section of the gas circulating tube (2) extends through the lance (11). One (10) of the two sections (9,10) of a quick-connection coupling is held in the lance. The probe retains the other section of the quick-connection coupling on the side facing away from the gas-collecting section of the probe and spaced from the gas-collecting section. The coupling ensures that a gas tight connection is made both with the gas supply line and with the gas discharge line of the probe when the coupling sections are joined in the gas circuit.

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 vloeibaar metaal.

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 10>

 EMI10.1

 <Desc/Clms Page number 11>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 12>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 13>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 14>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 15>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 16>

 keramisch materiaal.

   "Apparatus for measuring a gas content of liquid metal and probe used therewith".

   The invention relates to a device for measuring a gas content of liquid metal, which device contains a probe which is intended to be immersed in the liquid metal and which in turn has a gas supply pipe intended at the end of the probe to located at the bottom, opens a gas receiving section for receiving the gas bubbling from the gas supply line through the metal, which section is opposite the mouth of the gas supply line and is provided with a diaphragm which allows gas to pass through but prevents liquid metal, and a gas discharge pipe connecting over the diaphragm to the gas collecting section, the device further comprising a gas circuit connecting at one end to the gas supply pipe of the probe and at its other end connecting to the gas discharge pipe of the probe,

   a gas detector mounted in this circuit and means mounted in or on this circuit for flowing gas through the circuit, through the gas detector and the probe.

   The content of dissolved gases, and in particular hydrogen, in liquid metal, has an important influence on the properties of the metal ultimately obtained. A high concentration of such gases not only results in brittleness of the metal, but can also cause serious errors such as "vocks or gas cavities".

   Hence it is necessary for metal and in particular steel, which must meet high quality requirements, the hydrogen content in the manufacturing

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 process and more particularly during refining and casting to keep the gas content within certain limits.

   Devices of the above-mentioned type are mainly intended for such a hydrogen determination and are intended to replace the conventional hydrogen determination, which consists in taking a sample from the liquid metal and analyzing it in the laboratory.

   With such devices, a small volume of carrier gas can be bubbled through the liquid metal. This gas is collected and circulated in the closed circuit several times until an equilibrium has been established between the gas in the metal and this carrier gas. The gas content, and in particular the hydrogen content, is then determined with the aid of the gas detector mounted in the gas circuit.

   An apparatus of this type is known from British Patent No. 821,821.

   However, in the device according to this patent, the probe is fixedly connected to the circuit and this probe is intended to be used for several successive measurements.

   This probe should therefore be made of special material that can withstand the long-term residence in a liquid metal bath, so that this probe is relatively expensive and in practice can only be used for measuring the hydrogen content in metal baths with a relatively low melting point. .

   Even in these cases, the service life is limited and replacing the probe is quite time consuming and expensive.

   This probe has therefore not found a breakthrough for measuring the hydrogen content, for example in liquid metal.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

   The object of the invention is to overcome these drawbacks and to provide a device for measuring a gas content of liquid metal which is relatively inexpensive to use and which can easily be made suitable for measuring in metal with a relatively high melting point such as steel.

   To this end, the liquid metal gas content measuring device includes a lance through which at least a portion of the gas circuit extends, the lance containing one portion of a quick coupling with two sections which can be coupled together, while the probe is attached to the the receiving section faces away and at a distance from this receiving section contains the other part of the quick coupling, which quick coupling in coupled position of the parts ensures a gas-tight connection of the two aforementioned ends of the gas circuit and the gas supply pipe and the gas discharge pipe of the probe respectively .

   Thus, the probe is designed as a disposable probe that is used for only one or at most a limited number of measurements.

   Thus, the probe must only withstand a relatively short residence in the liquid metal so that it can also be constructed for measuring in high melting point metal and can be made from relatively inexpensive materials.

   In a special embodiment of the invention, the probe comprises a thermal protection surrounding the quick coupling and the end of the lance connecting to the probe.

   This thermal protection should also only withstand liquid metal for a limited time

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 and can be made of inexpensive materials such as baked sand, cardboard and the like. The gases released by the possible combustion of this protection practically do not affect the measurement since this thermal protection is located at a relatively great distance from the collecting section.

   In a curious embodiment of the invention, the quick coupling includes mechanical means for coupling the two parts thereof.

   In an effective embodiment of the invention, the gas supply pipe and the gas discharge pipe of the probe surround each other outside the portion of the quick coupling.

   Preferably, the outer conduit includes a tube connecting the receptacle portion to the probe quick-connect portion.

   In another curious embodiment of the invention, the receiving portion and the diaphragm are one and the same piece.

   This collection section is expediently made of porous stone.

   In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the device includes means for opening the gas circuit and communicating the portion thereof which communicates with the gas discharge conduit with the free atmosphere.

   In this embodiment, at the start of the measurement, the carrier gas supplied to the gas circuit can be released back into the atmosphere and the actual circulation of the carrier gas in closed circuit over the probe, and thus the actual measurement, can only be started after the first detection by the katharometer of impurities in the carrier gas.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

   The invention also relates to a probe evidently intended to be used in a device according to any of the previous embodiments.

   Other particularities and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description of an apparatus for measuring a gas content of liquid metal and of a probe used therewith, according to the invention; this description is given by way of example only and does not limit the invention; the reference numbers refer to the accompanying drawings.

   Figure 1 represents a block diagram of an apparatus for measuring a gas content of liquid metal according to the invention.

   Figure 2 is partly a section and partly a front view of a probe from the device of Figure 1.

   Figure 3 represents a detail from Figure 3, but on a larger scale, in which part of the lance connected to the probe is also shown.

   Figure 4 is a partial cut-away front view of a probe analogous to that of Figure 2 but with reference to another embodiment of the probe.

   Figure 5 is partly a front view and partly a section of a filter from the device of Figure 1.

   Figure 6 is a partial cut-away front view of a probe analogous to that of Figures 2 and 3 or 4 but with reference to yet another embodiment of the probe.

   In the different figures, like reference numerals refer to like elements.

   The device according to figure 1 is a device for measuring the hydrogen content in

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 liquid metal.

   This device mainly comprises a probe and a gas circuit 2 which connects to the probe with both ends and in which, in the flow direction of the gas indicated by the arrow 3 in figure 1, one after the other a filter 4, a katharometer 5, a pump 6 , a four-way valve 7 and a flow meter 8 are mounted.

   The probe 1 is a disposable probe, is releasably attached to a lance 11 through a shortcut 9, 10 through which ends of the gas circuit 2 extend and is connected to these two ends of the circuit 2 by means of the same shortcut 9, 10.

   A bottle 12 with pressurized nitrogen is connected to the four-way cock 7 by means of a supply line 13.

   This four-way valve 7 closes the gas circuit 2 in one position, while the supply line 13 is in communication with the free atmosphere. Of course, the bottle 12 is then closed. In another position, the four-way cock interrupts the gas circuit 2 and, on the one hand, connects the supply line 13 to the part of the gas circuit 2 connecting over the flow meter 8 or the probe 1, and on the other hand, it sets the part of the gas circuit 2 that the pump 6 communicates with the free atmosphere.

   The katharometer 5 is also of a known construction and is not described here in detail. This katharometer determines the hydrogen content of the inert carrier gas by measuring the thermal conductivity of the gas.

   The probe 1, as shown in Figure 2, contains on one end a gas-collecting portion formed by a clock 14 of porous refractory stone and on the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

 at the other end one part 9 of the above-mentioned shortcut 9, 10.

   The clock 14 is turned away with its opening from the section 9 and is kept at a distance from this section 9 by a quartz tube 15 at the ends of which the clock 14 and the section 9 are fixed by means of the cement 16.

   Axially through the quartz tube 15 extends a quartz tube 17 which on the one hand protrudes into the portion 9 and on the other hand extends through the clock 14 and is attached to this clock 14 with cement.

   In the open end of the quartz tube 17 protruding outside the clock 14, a leg of a narrower quartz tube 18 bent over 1800 is fastened with the aid of the cement 19. The other leg of this quartz tube 18 is with its open end facing the opening of the clock 14. The cement 19 closes the tube 17 around the tube 18 in a gas-tight manner.

   In the quartz tube 15, the quartz tube is 17
 EMI7.1
 still surrounded by a tube 20 of A1203.

   The elide of the quartz tube 15 removed from the clock 14 and especially the portion 9 of the quick coupling 9, 10 are surrounded by a sleeve consisting of three surrounding and connecting tubes, namely an inner tube 21 of cardboard, a middle tube 22 cardboard and an outer tube 23 of resin-bonded sand.

   The tubes 22 and 23 of this tube are attached to the quartz tube 15 by means of cement 24.

   The sleeve 21, 22, 23 on the side remote from the clock 14 extends noticeably beyond the portion 9. The inner diameter of the inner tube 21 corresponds to the outer diameter of the lance 11 which ends with its end in this tube when it is connected to the probe 1.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

   The sleeve 21, 22, 23 forms a thermal protection of this lower end of the lance 11 and mainly of the quick coupling oslo
As is particularly evident from Figure 3, the part 9 of the quick coupling 9, 10 consists of a body which is provided on the immersion side, i.e. the side facing the clock 14, with a collar 25 in which the quartz tube 15 is fixed and centrally of a bore 26 is provided into which the quartz tube 17 projects with one end.

   An axial bore 27 extends through this body, which connects to the bore 26 and forms a gas supply pipe together with the quartz tubes 17 and 18.

   In addition to the axial bore 27, through the body of the portion 9, four bores 28 extend into the space between the quartz tube 15 and the quartz tube 17 and, together with the latter space, form a gas discharge pipe which is closed on the immersion side by the porous bell 14 which forms a diaphragm, allows gas to pass through but stops liquid metal.

   The diameter of the body of the portion 9 of the quick coupling 9, 10 gradually decreases in the direction away from the quartz tube 5, such that three inwardly extending collars 29, 30 and 31 are formed.

   The inner tube 21 of the sleeve 21, 22, 23 connects to the most outward and collar 29 closest to the quartz tube 15 and also connects to the outside of the cylindrical portion of the portion 9 which is between the collars 29 and 30 is located.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 9>

   The portion of the smaller diameter body located between collars 30 and 31 is surrounded by a partially recessed O-ring 32.

   The above-mentioned bores 28 open into the collar 30.

   The cylindrical part protruding outside the collar 30 is also surrounded by a O-ring 33 which is partly sunk into it.

   The collars 30 and 31 and the O-rings 32 and 33 cooperate with parts of the portion 10 of the quick coupling 9, 10, which portion 10 forms a piece mounted on the end of the lance 11.

   This part 10 is provided on its end with an axial round bore 34 in which the cylindrical part of the part 9 situated between the collars 30 and 31 fits and is provided with a smaller axial bore 35 which on the one hand opens onto the bottom of the bore 34 and on the other hand connects to the end of the gas circuit 2 which is located in front of the filter 4.

   Around the bore 35, in the section 10, a channel 36 extends which, on the one hand, opens onto the bottom of the bore 35 and, on the other hand, connects to the other end of the gas circuit 2, which, like the previous end, is fixed in this section 10.

   These two ends of the gas circuit thus extend through the metal lance 11.

   In the smallest bore 35 of the portion 10 of the quick-release coupling 9, 10, a mechanical connecting piece 37 is provided which has four resilient legs 38 provided with their thickened ends. When the lance 11 is slid into the sleeve 21, 22, 23, these four legs 38 are clicked resiliently over the thickened head on the end of the projection outside the collar 31

 <Desc / Clms Page number 10>

 EMI10.1
 section of section 9.

  When the lance 11 is slid into the sleeve 21 maximally, shown in Figure 3, the legs 38 with the thickening on their ends hook behind an outwardly directed collar formed at the location of a groove 47 projecting from the outside of the collar 31 end of the section 9 of the shortcut 9, 10.

  The connecting piece 37 is provided with a channel 39 so that the bore 35 remains in communication with the end of the circuit 2.

  In the fully retracted position of the lance 11, one end of the portion 10 abuts against the collar 30 of the portion 9 and the inner wall of the bore 34 is gas-tight against the O-ring 32.

  The inner wall of the bore 35 then connects gastight to the o-ring 33.

  The probe 1 is connected mechanically, but still detachable in this way by the connector 37, since by exerting sufficient force the legs 38 can resiliently slide to slide over the thickened end of the portion 9 to the probe 1.

  The gas discharge conduit 15 formed by the tube 15, around the tube 17, and the bore 28, of the probe 1 connects in a gastight manner over the channel 36 to the end of the gas circuit 2 while the tubes 17 and 18 and the bores 27 formed gas discharge pipe 17, 18, 27 via the central bore 35 connects gas-tight to the other end of the gas circuit 2. In coupled position of the quick coupling 9, a portion of the bore 34 extending symmetrically around the portion 9, the connection between the bores 28 in the section 9 and the channel 36 in the section 10, while via the bore 35 the axial bore 27 in the section 9 connects to the channel 39 in the section 10.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 11>

  The section 10 can thus be coupled in any position of the section 9 and the lance 11 therefore does not have to be slid into the sleeve 21, 22, 23 in the specific position.

   In a variant of the above-described embodiment, the porous clock 14 is made of bonded ceramic fibers instead of porous stone.

   The variant of the probe 1 shown in Figure 4 differs from the embodiment of the probe shown in Figures 2 and 3 only in that the receiving part is not formed by a clock 14 but by the dome end of the quartz tube 15 itself and by the wafer 40 of porous ceramic material which at an distance from the open end of the quartz tube 15 closes this tube around the axial quartz tube 17 and thus forms the diaphragm that allows gas to pass through but no liquid metal, and because the tube 20 of A1203 has been replaced by a mass of balls 41 which fills the space around the axial quartz tube 17 and between the disk 40 and the portion 9 of the quick coupling 9, 10.

  These balls 41 do not prevent the passage of gas, so that the space between the quartz tube 15 and the central quartz tube 17 is still part of the gas discharge pipe of the probe 1 issuing on the porous disk 40. For the sake of simplicity, in figure 4 the tube 21, 22, 23 of probe 1 not suggested.

   In both embodiments, just above the diaphragm, which is above the bell 14 or the disk 40, in the tube 15 are some granules 46 of a chemical element that forms stable oxides, such as chromium, zinc, tithane, aluminum, zirconium, calcium, magnesium or an element of the lanthanides.

  Zinc, magnesium and calcium are particularly recommended

 <Desc / Clms Page number 12>

 since they are in gaseous form at the temperatures used and are highly reactive.

  These elements prevent that if the material of the diaphragm contains unstable oxides, hydrogen from the metal bath is converted into water which would affect the measurement.

   Instead of granules of these elements a layer of the element can be applied to a part of the tube 15 or the tube 17.

   In both embodiments, the whole formed by the quartz tube 15 with possibly the clock 14, the projecting end of the quartz tube 17 and the quartz tube 18 may still be surrounded by a cap of metal, which for the sake of simplicity is not shown in the figures and is attached to the tube 21, 22, 23 and which is surrounded by a cardboard hood, also not shown in the figures.

   The cardboard cap prevents the slag from sticking to the metal cap when inserting the probe 1 through a slag which is on top of the liquid metal, which metal cap prevents damaging the probe 1 when inserting it. last through the snail.

   Upon insertion, the cap burns off cardboard while immediately after insertion the cap melts of metal, after which measurement can be performed as described below.

   As can be seen from figure 5, the filter 4 comprises an end 42 closed at one end, to the other open end of which a part 44 of the quick coupling, which is identical to the aforementioned part 9 of the quick coupling 9, 10, connects. Corresponding parts of section 44 are given the same reference numerals as in section 9.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 13>

   Axially in the tube 42 extends a tube 43 open at both ends, one end of which terminates a distance from the closed end of the tube 42 and the other end of which is mounted in the portion 44 and opens onto the axial bore 27 of section 44.

   The space between the tube 43 and the tube 42, which space connects to the bores 28 in the section 44, is filled with filter material 45.

   In the gas circuit 2, the second part of the quick coupling cooperating with the part 44 is mounted, which second part is identical to the aforementioned part 10 of the quick coupling 9, 10.

   For the sake of simplicity, this second part is not shown in the figures.

   The bores 34 and 35 and the channel 36 of this second part connect to the part of the gas circuit 2 which connects directly to the probe 1, while the channel 36 of this second part communicates with the part of the gas circuit 2 to the katharometer 5.
 EMI13.1

  In this way, this quick coupling, in the same way as the quick coupling 9, forms only a quick connection of the detachable filter to the gas circuit 2, but also the transition from two coaxial pipes, namely the pipe 42 and the pipe 43, to two parallel pipes. , namely the parts of the gas circuit 2 on either side of the filter 4.

   The embodiment of the probe 1 shown in Figure 6 differs from the embodiment according to Figures 2 and 3 solely by a different construction of the sleeve 21, 22, 23 which forms the thermal protection of the quick coupling 9, 10.

   The inner tube 21 is also made of cardboard, but the outer tube is one

 <Desc / Clms Page number 14>

 very thin tube made of cardboard, while the middle tube
22 is formed by resin-bonded sand.

   The manufacture of this tube is quite easy. It is sufficient to apply the sand with the resin between tubes 21 and 23 and to bake it in an oven. The outer carton 23 protects the sand.

   In still other embodiments, this outer sleeve 23 is made of tinplate, or even plastic, instead of cardboard. The outer sleeve 23 may or may not be coated with a non-splash layer.

   When performing a measurement, a probe 1 is mounted on a lance 11 by means of the quick coupling 9, 10, which lance is thus slid into the tube 21, 22, 23 of the probe 1.

   The four-way cock 7 is placed in the position where the supply line 13 connects to the gas circuit 2 so that the bottle 12 is connected in the direction of the probe 1 and the probe 1 is immersed in the liquid metal.

     Nitrogen bubbles from the quartz tube 18 and is formed by the receiving section, formed by the clock 14 or by the bottom part of the quartz tube 15, by the diaphragm formed by this clock 14 or by the disk 40, by the pump 6 which has now been activated extracted. At the location of the four-way cock 7, this extracted gas escapes into the atmosphere.

   Ten seconds after the first detection of impurities by the katharometer 5, the four-way cock 7 is placed, either manually or automatically, in the other position shown in Figure 1.

   The inert nitrogen gas present in the gas circuit 2 is now circulated by the pump 6 in this circuit by the probe 1, so that in situ

 <Desc / Clms Page number 15>

 of the receiving portion of this probe, when the carrier gas bubbles through the liquid metal, exchange takes place with the gases contained in the liquid metal. After a short time, an equilibrium is approached and the signal from the katharometer becomes representative of the concentration of the gases dissolved in the liquid metal, in particular the hydrogen.

   The measurement is very simple and fast.

  Only the probe must be replaced during each measurement.

  The rest of the device can be used over and over again.

   The quick coupling makes it very easy and quick to replace the probe.

  The filter can also be quickly replaced by the quick coupling.

   The invention is by no means limited to the above-described embodiments and many changes can be made to the described embodiments within the scope of the patent application, including as regards the shape, the composition, the arrangement and the number of the parts used to realize the invention.

   In particular, the different parts of the probe need not necessarily be made of the materials described above.

  These materials depend, among other things, on the metal bath in which it is measured.

   For example, the diaphragm formed by the clock or disc does not necessarily have to be a porous stone. This diaphragm can, for example, also be made of ceramic fibers.

   The outer tube of the probe should also not necessarily be made of quartz. This tube can also be made of metal coated with a

 <Desc / Clms Page number 16>

 ceramic material. The tube can be made of uncoated steel for measuring in liquid copper.

   In the embodiment where the lower portion of the outer tube itself forms the receiving portion together with the diaphragm, the entire tube may be made of a porous material, the upper end of which is gas-tight and heat-resistant coated and the lower portion of which is joined together with the diaphragm forms a porous collection section.

   The thermal protection should not necessarily consist of three concentric tubes. This thermal protection can for instance consist of a single tube of baked sand or of cardboard.

   The meter in the gas circuit does not necessarily have to be a katharometer. Other detection devices that can measure a gas in the carrier gas can be used. For example, a meter based on infrared radiation can be used to measure CO, CO, SO and H2S.

   The mechanical coupling of the parts of the quick coupling does not necessarily have to be done by resilient legs on the part belonging to the lance. The portion associated with the probe may have resilient legs or may be resiliently deformable. The coupling must only allow a certain mechanical connection that can be undone by applying sufficient pulling force.
