Abstract
The animated sign, for use e.g in art, advertising or toys, consists of a rotating solid object in the shape of a disc, drum or sphere. It can be made from wood, metal, plastics or a composite material, with dimensions which can vary from a few centimetres to several metres. It is illuminated by a stroboscopic light as it rotates. Depending on its shape, the solid body can rotate about a horizontal or vertical axis, driven by a motor through a normal transmission system such as a belt, gears, a rack or an endless screw. The stroboscopic illumination creates an impression of movement on the surface of the solid object, lighting it for periods of 1/400th to 1/2000th of a second at a time.
Description
<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Disc, drum or sphere covered with signs and spinning on themselves under strobe lighting.
This invention relates to any animated visual communication device both in the visual arts, in advertising and in the game and toy industry: this invention makes it possible to animate any image or any object thanks to stroboscopic lighting.
In a cinematographic film, movement is ensured by projection
EMI1.1
still images at the rate of 24 images per second. From the very type of this projection follows a series of drawbacks: -necessity to observe the projection in strict light conditions.
- very high frame rate to suggest movement.
-impossibility of having a relief because it is a projection of images (2 dimensions).
Our method overcomes these drawbacks because, as will be mentioned in the description, it recreates any movement by decomposing it into a series of fixed attitudes and then lighting them up with a stroboscope when they are set in motion.
From the type of solution adopted, a series of advantages compared to the cinematographic process follows: movement by adding to the surface no more images but objects
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
- It is no longer required to observe the invention under strict light conditions provided that the strobe lighting is dominant on the surface of the disc, the drum or the sphere.
The description set out below is only one of many other ways of making this invention. You can refer to the diagrams for a better understanding of the system. Take a disc seen in perspective () on the surface of which are placed in a well-defined order objects in relief (take 12 for example). Observe) that each object is slightly different from the one that precedes and the one that follows it: the purpose of this difference is to break down, for example, into 12 precise moments the whole movement.
When the disc starts to turn on itself around a fixed axis thanks to an electric motor and when the stoboscopic lighting works, it will then form on the surface of the disc which will appear motionless, an animation of an object coherent The speed of rotation of the disc is a function of the number of phases of the movement (here 12) and of the period of the strobe lighting.
