 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 10>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 11>

  "Process for the internal siliconization of synthetic fibers and internally siliconized synthetic fibers produced by this process".
 EMI1.1

  -------------------
The use of synthetic fibers to replace natural raw materials is used in many products, and not only in woven products. Depending on the nature of the finished product and its intended use, these synthetic fibers must meet certain specific properties to ensure good quality and easy maintenance.

  Often the synthetic fibers have to undergo a certain treatment for that purpose. A commonly used treatment is the siliconization of synthetic fibers, which gives them a number of positive properties that are necessary, for example, when used as a filler fiber: namely, their sliding capacity and their resilience are increased and they appear to be more resistant to washing with warm water and chemical cleaning. . For example, if one wishes to use the synthetic fibers as carpet fibers, the anti-silencing properties (not soiling quickly) are significantly improved by the siliconization.

   A number of methods are known for the siliconization of plastics, which can be divided into two large groups. On the one hand, a number of methods consist of applying silicone products afterwards and on the outside (in emulsion form and / or as silicone oil).

  A disadvantage of these methods is that the different follow-up processes (distribution, texturing, etc.) are negatively influenced. Another drawback of this first group of methods is that certain fixing measures are necessary. Furthermore, it is also a drawback that the applied silicone films are difficult to spread evenly, especially at low dosages. Yet another drawback lies in the fact that the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 contact of the silicone with the fiber surface is insufficient, especially with the polyolefins, with the disadvantage that only a low resistance to washing and chemical cleaning can be ensured.

   On the other hand, a second group of known methods for the siliconization of plastics consists of the incorporation of silicone products into the plastics, in particular (for example in injection molded products) as a lubricant. The disadvantage of these methods lies in the processing problems that arise in the manufacture of nonwoven and fibers.

   The object of the invention is to provide a method for the permanent siliconization of synthetic fiber surfaces, so that synthetic fibers can be manufactured according to this method, which do not show the above-mentioned drawbacks, due to the siliconization according to the known methods.

   An object of the invention is a process for the internal siliconization of synthetic fibers, characterized in that polymeric siloxane products are added to the polyolefin raw materials which are used for the manufacture of synthetic fibers, whereby the polymeric siloxanes are injected evenly into the powdery raw materials, which are thereby stir vigorously, warm up strongly and evenly, and then cool again with continuous stirring to a temperature lower than the softening point of the raw material. By using this method, a raw material is obtained, characterized in that an even distribution of the incorporated polymeric siloxane is guaranteed, this raw material being another object of the invention.

   This method, for the production of the polymer containing an internal amount of silicone product, according to the invention, is preferred

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 way by injecting the silicone into the extruder using dosing equipment (for example, a single or twin screw extruder or co-kneader) during the extrusion process, to obtain granulate particles, starting from the powdery base material obtained during the polymerization process of the raw material (e.g. polypropylene).

   The silicone product is thus evenly distributed in the extruder and the molten polymer mass is thus mixed with the silicone product and is pressed through a sheet with bores in the extrusion process to obtain the granulate-shaped particles, after which the wires thus obtained are cut using a cutting installation can be reduced to granular particles. This material thus obtained is then used in the spinning process extruder to obtain the internally siliconized fiber.

   The method according to the invention is further characterized in that after a rest period the further processing of this raw material can be started, which can take the form of a compound and / or master batch, depending on the concentration of the polymeric siloxanes introduced.

   The method according to the invention is characterized in a next step in that standard crystal defects are caused by a mechanical action on the spin cable, which lead to a larger upper surface and form starting points for the silicone spread on the individual fiber surfaces. By standard crystal defects is meant here a mechanical deformation of the fiber, by the so-called texturing process, which causes an increase in pressure on the fiber surface, resulting in a "squeezing out" of the silicone from the polymer matrix. (The texturing process can either be two-dimensional with a stuffer box or three-dimensional via hot air texturing).

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

   The process according to the invention is also characterized in that the polymeric siloxanes, when added, are dosed such that the silicone content on the surface of the fibers is kept as low (ie as close to zero) during the spinning process, and that the siliconized surface is obtained only after all steps necessary for the manufacture of synthetic fibers have been completed, by the migration and spread of polymeric siloxane products, which occurs permanently from the cross section towards the surface, of the siliconised synthetic fibers.

   Known installations and methods for manufacturing synthetic fibers are used for applying the method according to the invention.

   The method according to the invention is characterized in that the following polyolefin raw materials can be used for its application: - polyolefins, in particular polypropylene and polyethylene (HDPE, LLDPE, LDPE) - polyethylene terephthalate - copolymers and polymer mixtures - and / or the the aforementioned raw materials with the addition of various additives, while especially butadine styrol derivatives are suitable as additives.

   The process for the internal siliconization of synthetic fibers is also characterized in that the following siliconization products are suitable for the use of this process: -polymeric dimethyl and methyl phenylsiloxanes with a viscosity range of 1000 to 20. 000 mm2. s - 1 (25 ° C), as well as mixtures of these products, and because the polymeric siloxanes are added to the raw materials for the synthetic fibers in concentrations between 0.5 and 20% by weight, based on the total weight of those synthetic fiber raw materials.

   It is essential to the method, according to the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 invention, that the polymeric siloxanes used are dosed such that as an advantage of the invention the migration to the surface of the synthetic fiber, and the spreading of the siloxanes takes place in a delayed manner, so that disturbances during the spinning process of the synthetic fiber are excluded and subsequently eliminated resistant, so that, even after washing and / or dry cleaning, a permanent silicone film is guaranteed by a permanent migration towards the surface of the polymeric siloxanes, which leads to a good "grip" of the synthetic fibers.

   The process according to the invention is further characterized in a next step in that after the mixing and mixing of the polyolefin raw materials suitable for the production of synthetic fibers and the correctly dosed polymeric siloxanes, the obtained raw material is spun into synthetic fibers with different cross sections. , for example, oval, round, triangular, trilobal and / or with cavities with different titers-for example 1, 7 to 200 dtex-for example 4 to 150 mm-, with different pigmentations-for example black, white, colored- and different texturing for example two-dimensional and / or three-dimensional folds, as well as different curvature numbers, for example 2 to 12 curves per cm.

   Another object of the invention consists of the internally siliconized synthetic fibers produced by this method, characterized in that a uniform, permanently active siliconization occurs, which acts through continuous migration of the polymeric siloxane products from the cross-section to the surface, also when, for example, the silicone layer has come off by washing and / or dry cleaning.

   In a preferred embodiment, the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 synthetic fibers made from the above polyolefin raw materials, according to the method of the invention, a trilobal cross section at 6.7 dtex, 60 mm stack length, white color, and exhibit three-dimensional folds with 6-7 curves per cm.

   Another possible method, according to the invention, deviates from the foregoing and is characterized in that, when using siloxane products with a higher viscosity degree, using appropriate dosing installations (for instance gear pumps), these can be added directly during the spinning process in the extruder. the high molecular raw materials, in the required dosage.

   In the following description, a number of examples are given of the method according to the invention, in each example using a different raw material and / or added polymer siloxane product, the invention being not limited to these possible methods, according to the invention, nor to the use of the siloxane products proposed here, their dosing ratios, their specific properties, or the operating temperatures and operating means.

  Example 1 The starting material hereby is polypropylene with an MFI of 14 / (230 C; 21.6N) and a density of 0.91 g. cm-3. In the powdered high molecular weight polypropylene, at 120OC, 2% of a polymer becomes dimethylsiloxane with a viscosity of 1000mm2. s-1 (measured at 25 C) and a density of 0.97 g. cm-3 (measured at 25 ° C) with constant stirring with an injection device added evenly at the correct dose.

  After dosing, the mixture is cooled to room temperature with continuous stirring. After a waiting period of 25 hours, the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

 powdered raw material granulated by the known method.

  The granulated substance thus prepared according to the invention, containing the polymeric siloxane, is cut on the synthetic fiber plant and extruded in a ratio of 1: 1 with a polypropylene granulate containing 5% of a butadine styrol derivative and 0.5% titanium dioxide. contains.

  Extrusion and stretching is carried out using known methods.

  In order to obtain the necessary standard crystal errors that lead to the intended migration and spread of the silicone product, the spin cable is fed at a high speed of 1400-1500 m / s in a hot air jet chamber against lamellae, which also gives them a three-dimensional crimp.

  The spider spray plates feature trilobal vents allowing a titer of 6.7 dtex. 60 mm is cut as a stack length.

  EXTRUSION CONDITIONS: Mixing the components.

  The polymer powder and additives are mixed in a "fluidized bed" mixer: 15 "at low speed and 30" at high speed.

  The polymeric siloxanes are sprayed (rotating) in the mixer and mixed in the polymer at high speed.

  Mixing takes 10 min. Until a temperature of maximum 1200C is reached (for PP).

  The polymer is cooled to room temperature. low speed = 500 m / min high speed = 1500 m / min

  The temperature at which the polypropylene and the polysiloxane are mixed is maximum 1200C to prevent "softening" and sticking of the PP. The polysiloxane is scattered on the surface of the powdered base material.

  Example 2 In contrast to the first example, a high polymer (HDPE) is used here with an MFI of 11 (190 C) and a density of 0.95 g. cm'3.

  The extrusion installation, in particular the temperature conductivity, is set to the value required for HDPE.

  This also applies to the temperature in the mixing bowl during the addition of the silicone product to the raw material powder. The other steps in the method followed according to the invention are the same as in the first example. The spin conditions in this example are based on the same principle as in Example 1, but the spin temperatures are adapted to the polymer type.

  Example 3 In contrast to example 2, a polyethylene (LLDPE) is used with an MFI of 18/190 C and a density of 0.93 g. cm - 3. Again, the mixing and extrusion temperatures on the raw material are set correctly. The other steps in the method followed according to the invention correspond to those of Example 1 and Example 2, respectively. The spin conditions in this

 <Desc / Clms Page number 10>

 examples are based on the same principle as in example 1, but the spinning temperatures are adapted to the polymer type.

  Example 4 As in Example 1, the raw material used is PP with an MFI 14 [2300C, 21.6N] and a density of 0.91 g / cm3 at 23 C. A polymer dimethylsiloxane with a viscosity of 20000 mm 2 / sec. (25 C) is added uniformly (4% siloxane weight conc. Of the matrix), and in the appropriate amount, to the melt of a high polymer PP at temperatures of 200-230 C.

  The polymer siloxanes are injected into a twin screw extruder d. m. v. a volumetric pump. The PP and the silicone are mixed in the extruder and the material is granulated.

  This method differs from pre-mixing because the mixing and homogenization of the 2 components (PO & Polysiloxane) is done during the extrusion process of the polymer for granulate or for fiber formation.

  The other steps are the same as in example 1.

  The spin conditions in this example are based on the same principle as in Example 1, but the spin temperatures are adapted to the polymer type.

  Example 5 As in example 4, the raw materials are PP and a polymer methyl phenyl siloxane (viscosity 1000 mm 2 / sec).

  In contrast to Example 4, the polymer siloxane is metered with a volumetric pump - immediately into the extruder - in such a way that the silicone content is 2% t. o. v. the total weight of the fiber raw material. The

 <Desc / Clms Page number 11>

 chosen procedure titer is 17 dtex with a stack length of 90 mm and a three-dimensional pleat with 7 curves / cm.

  The cross section is round.

  The spin conditions in this example are based on the same principle as in Example 1, but the spin temperatures are adapted to the polymer type.

   On the one hand, an advantage of the method according to the invention lies in the fact that the different follow-up processes that the synthetic fibers undergo during their manufacture and / or processing are not adversely affected by the siliconization, since it only takes effect afterwards. (the positive synthetic fiber properties are guaranteed during processing and manufacture).

   Another advantage of the method according to the invention, and of the siliconised synthetic fibers according to the invention, is that after the manufacture and processing of the synthetic fibers we obtain an even distribution of the silicone films, while this is permanent, because we get a continuous migration of the siloxane products from the interior to the surface of the synthetic fibers, whereby a loosened silicone layer (by washing and / or dry cleaning) is replaced in this way, so that a high resistance to washing and dry cleaning is guaranteed.

   The above-mentioned and sought-after positive properties of siliconised synthetic fibers are of course also achieved here (high sliding capacity, high resilience, resistance to washing and dry cleaning, anti-silencing properties) with the advantage that these properties are retained for longer by the permanent migration and spreading of the siloxanes. stay.
