DESCRIPTION
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

DESCRIPTION
FLEXIBLE AND WATERPROOF GLOVE.
The invention relates to a flexible and waterproof glove, of the type which is used for working in a closed enclosure, such as a glove box, and whose primary function is to protect the user against dangerous reagents or agents which 'he must handle or, conversely, protect the material contained in the box against the external environment.
In its preferred mode of application, the invention relates to gloves extended by flexible sleeves which widen outwards, in which will also be housed at least part of the user's forearms, the the open end of this sleeve then being arranged so as to allow, in a manner known per se, its watertight fixing to the edges of an opening made in the front wall of the glove box.
We know that this type of glove box is used in many fields, to handle radioactive materials or viral preparations to name a few. These gloves must then satisfy many conditions, in particular having both flexibility, elasticity, and excellent mechanical properties, to be able to withstand the risks of accidental tears or ruptures. They must also have sealing properties, in particular very important impermeability and be resistant to chemical agents possibly corrosive present or produced in the glove box at the time of the above manipulations.
Finally, they should offer only a low resistance to movements of the hand or fingers, to avoid fatigue which would otherwise quickly settle in the user, hence the desirable character of a thickness as reduced as possible.
There are hardly any elastomeric materials which can satisfy all of the conditions, moreover incompletely listed above, which gloves of the kind in question must satisfy.
This is why we generally use gloves formed from several layers of separate materials, respectively
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
able to meet part of the prescribed conditions, it being understood of course that the "multilayer" material must itself meet all of the said prescribed conditions.
As examples of such a type of glove, mention will be made of that described in European patent 89108251.3 / 0342470 essentially oriented towards gloves for closed boxes or enclosures, in which radioactive materials are treated. To this end, the holder of this patent recommends the production of gloves formed of a "multilayer" material comprising, starting from the internal surface of the glove coming into contact with the hand, a first layer based on polyester urethane based on a aromatic diisocianate, a second layer of synthetic rubber, a third layer formed from a mixture of lead oxide and polychloroprene, a fourth layer based on chlorosulfonated polyethylene and, finally, again a layer of flush urethane polyester on the outer surface of the glove.
As explained by the patentee, these gloves make cumulative use of the elasticity and high mechanical strength of polyester urethane, the protective effect exerted by the central layer based on lead oxide and polychloroprene against radioactive radiation of the materials handled, and the properties of the synthetic rubber layer, in particular based on an unsaturated rubber based on ethylene and propylene, to protect the polyester urethane layer against aggressive chemical agents, including included any chemical decomposition products likely to occur within the central layer loaded with lead. Of course, the patentee also provides for the possible omission of the last three layers, since the materials to be handled are not radioactive.
In this case, the second layer, made of synthetic rubber, is oriented towards the outside of the glove.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
It clearly results from this patent application, the concern, moreover, constantly encountered in the state of the art, of ensuring the protection of the user against the harmfulness of the products or agents present in the glove box, or even against possible degradation products that may form within the glove material. We will not be surprised that the nature of the materials treated or the sometimes corrosive atmosphere in the glove compartment also has the effect of reducing the longevity of the gloves, which must therefore be replaced often.
It is however a factor also intervening in the reduced longevity of gloves, in particular of those which take advantage of the qualities at the same time of flexibility, elasticity and mechanical resistance which the appropriate grades of polyurethane can possess and which has hardly been taken into account to date. It is the deleterious effect for these polyurethanes, then also sensitive to hydrolysis, of the products of the inevitable sweating of the fingers and the hand of the user, during prolonged use of the glove box .
In fact, the flexible polyurethane grades do not have good resistance to hydrolysis and therefore very quickly lose their very good mechanical properties in the presence of water.
The object of the invention is to remedy the drawback represented by this hitherto unknown factor and to provide gloves, in particular for glove boxes, the basic structure of which is formed by a layer of elastic, flexible and polyurethane. with high mechanical resistance, having a longer service life.
The invention relates more particularly to a flexible glove with high mechanical strength, for the protection of the user from all contact with dangerous products which he may be called upon to handle, the structure of which is capable of giving him mechanical strength. desired is formed of a waterproof sheet or layer based on a polyurethane, having the desired grade for this purpose and having a thickness of 0.2 to 0.8 mm.
The glove according to
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
the invention is then characterized by the association with the inside-facing face of the glove of the polyurethane structure of a sheet or internal layer of a synthetic rubber of the butyl rubber type having a thickness of 0.05 to 0 , 2 mm, impermeable to water vapor and intended to be interposed between the polyurethane layer and the user's hand. 1
Unexpectedly, the use of this arrangement has the effect of significantly extending the longevity of gloves of this type, based on polyurethane, in particular when using waterproof synthetic rubbers based on butyl rubber. .
In a way, the internal sheet of synthetic rubber forms a kind of pre-glove, inside the glove based on polyurethane. Butyl rubber is a preferred elastomer, having a very good impermeability to water vapor. It protects the polyurethane layer from hydrolysis by the moisture of perspiration released by the skin of the part of the hand and fingers of the user, so that is eliminated one of the important causes of the relatively quick loss of very good properties
EMI4.1
initial mechanics of the polyurethane structure. The layer of 1 butyl rubber therefore allows the integrity of the physico-chemical and mechanical properties of the polyurethane layer to be preserved, even when the glove is used for a prolonged period.
Figure 1 shows very schematically an embodiment of the glove (2) according to the invention comprising, on the one hand, a first part (4) adapted to receive the hand of the user and, on the other hand, extending the above outwardly, a sleeve (6) of approximately frustoconical shape, at least in its first part. It comprises a structure or layer based on polyurethane (8) and a pre-glove (10) made of waterproof synthetic rubber, in particular butyl rubber.
The glove can be removably mounted via the open end of the sleeve in the edges of openings made for this purpose in the front part (12) of a glove box (14), the outline ( 16), which delimits
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
the interior space, isolated from the atmosphere, of the glove box is symbolically represented in mixed lines. For the purposes of the above-mentioned attachment, the outer edges of the gloves are, for example, provided with beads (18) or with a rigid ring allowing their friction engagement in grooves not shown, provided for this purpose in extra thicknesses formed on the edges of said openings.
Given the small thickness desired for the glove, the synthetic rubber layer is normally intended to come into direct contact with the hand. However, the invention does not in any way exclude the fact that this slightly synthetic porous structure is also associated with this layer of synthetic rubber intended to increase the comfort of the user. It is understood, however, that this can only be envisaged at the cost of an increase in thickness, therefore a reduction in the flexibility and / or elasticity of the glove, especially at the level of the user's fingers. .
It is also sufficient for the "pre-glove" to occupy only the front part of the glove, in which the user's hand is going to be housed, to keep the sleeve its qualities of elasticity and flexibility.
To produce the gloves of the invention, any production technique can be used. The gloves can for example be made from two-layer material, one of which is formed from polyurethane meeting the above conditions and from a layer of butyl rubber or the like.
Preferably, however, use will be made of the technique for producing the gloves in question of the "rubber solution-soaking technique" type. This technique consists of forming the glove on a mold soaked several times in dissolutions of the elastomers from which the glove must subsequently be formed. Preferably, dissolutions of the different elastomers using compatible solvents will be used, in particular by operating as follows:
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
- the mold is first dipped in a solution of butyl rubber to obtain the pre-glove.
The pre-glove height is a function of the total height of the finished glove; two successive soaks are sufficient to obtain a pre-glove 1/10 mm thick; - the mold is then dipped in a polyurethane solution; eight successive quenchings will give a thickness of 4/10 mm.
The glove finally obtained will be in one piece, due to the inseparable nature of the different layers from which it will be formed. It will be appreciated that it is easy in this process to form a pre-glove of reduced length in what will be the final region of the glove in which the hand, and in particular the user's fingers, will be housed (by modifying the " "relative soaking heights).,
The use of molds of different sizes and different lengths naturally makes it possible to obtain as many models of glove as will be desired.
However, it may also be advisable to protect the outer surface of the glove (in contact with the interior atmosphere of the glove box) with one or more additional layers of material, depending on the nature of the materials to be treated within this box. in gloves. Polyurethanes do not generally have very good resistance to chemicals. By way of example, the polyurethane glove can be protected from external chemical attack, by one or more external coatings of synthetic rubbers chosen specifically according to the desired chemical resistance. This can be a polychloroprene, a chlorosulfonated polyethylene, a rubber based on ethylene, propylene known under the designation EPDM or a fluorinated elastomer.
This outer layer (or these outer layers) may (have) also be produced by the above-mentioned technique of rubber soaking in dissolution, on the preceding mold and on which will have at
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
the interior pre-glove made of waterproof synthetic rubber was successively formed, then the polyurethane glove. If necessary, the outer layer can be made antistatic by a layer of antistatic polyurethane or by another synthetic rubber, depending on the specific chemical resistance desired by the end user of the glove.
The following are examples of the characteristics of a glove according to the invention.

In summary, the glove according to the invention is a very flexible polyurethane glove with very high mechanical properties, the mechanical characteristics of which are protected on the inside by a pre-glove, preferably made of butyl rubber and, if necessary, exterior by layers of elastomer chosen according to the nature of the materials that the user is called upon to handle and, if necessary, of the atmosphere then likely to reign in the glove box.
Finally, the invention relates to the glove boxes themselves, when these are fitted with gloves of the type which has been described. The invention therefore relates very particularly to a glove box defining a closed enclosure isolated from the outside, provided in its front wall with at least two openings arranged so as to allow the watertight fixing of the end edges of a pair of gloves intended to protect the user's hands against the materials he intends to handle in this box,
