Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Figs. 6 et 7

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

      sont des vues analogues à la Fig. 4 montrant deux autres formes de base ou douille et Fig. 8 est une vue partielle en coupe verticale montrant le montage d'un certain nombre de réflecteurs dans un cadre ou support, en vue de former une enseigne.

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

   improvements to reflectors and to indicator signs or plaques formed from these reflectors,
This invention relates to reflectors capable of returning or reflecting, along their line of incidence or approximately the light rays which strike them.
It also relates to signs or indicator plates comprising reflectors of this type mounted in a frame or support and grouped or arranged so as to form the advertisement or indication which should attract attention.
The invention relates to a reflector of the type indicated, more efficient than the known reflectors as regards the use of the light which strikes it and the reflection of this light along its line of incidence,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 with the consequence of a stronger -illumination- of the reflector and a greater clarity or legibility at a distance and at an extended angle, of a sign or indicator plate comprising these reflectors. Another object of the invention is to facilitate the mounting and / or grouping of reflectors in frames or supports and also of reflector protectors against any accidental damage.

   A reflector according to the invention comprises a plano-convex lens and a concave reflector mirror disposed behind the planar posterior surface of the lens.

  The planar posterior face and the spherical anterior face of the lens and the reflecting mirror have a common normal line and the axial length of the lens is equal to or substantially equal to twice the radius of its anterior convex surface, while the radius of curvature of the reflecting mirror is equal to or approximately two-thirds of the axial length of the lens and the center of this curvature coincides with the center of curvature of the anterior convex surface of the lens or is situated slightly behind from this center. Furthermore, according to the invention, the reflector comprises a base or socket on which it can be placed upright when it is mounted in a frame or support, and which also serves as a protector for the reflecting mirror.

   In the accompanying drawings, FIG. 1 is a fragmentary section showing a reflector according to the invention mounted in a frame or support, Fig. 2 is a front view of FIG. 1 and Fig. 3 is a schematic front view showing a sign on which the reflectors are arranged so as to form the word LOMO "Fig. 4 is a sectional elevation of a reflector provided with a base or socket and Fig. 5 is a plan view of this base or socket. Figs. 6 and 7

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

      are views similar to FIG. 4 showing two other basic or socket shapes and FIG. 8 is a partial view in vertical section showing the mounting of a number of reflectors in a frame or support, with a view to forming a sign.

   In Figs. 1, 2 and 3 of the drawings, the improved reflector comprises a lens 7 and a concave reflector mirror 10, the lens having a convex front surface 8 and a planar posterior surface 9 perpendicular to its axis, and the mirror reflector 10 being disposed behind and facing the planar posterior surface of the lens and so that its axis coincides with that thereof, so that the anterior and posterior surfaces of the lens and the reflecting mirror have a nor - common male. The reflecting mirror is advantageously fixed to the lens by means of a rim 11, the edge of which is folded behind a shoulder 6 of the lens.

   When the refractive index of the glass used is 1.5 or very close to this figure, the axial length of the lens must be double the radius of its anterior convex surface 8, the radius of the reflecting mirror 10 must be equal to both third of the axial length of the lens and the center of curvature of this reflecting mirror must coincide with the center of curvature of the anterior convex surface of the lens or be a little behind this center.

   It has been found that with a reflector of the type described, light coming from any direction and striking the curved anterior surface of the lens is reflected along its line of incidence while "illuminating". ment the spherical surface of the lens, seen from a point on this line.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 if the refractive index of the lens glass exceeds 1.5, the axial length of this lens should be slightly decreased to get the best result, tan- disc if the refractive index is less than 1.5, the axial length of the lens must be slightly increased.

   A simple experiment will suffice to indicate the axial length which a lens made of glass of any particular kind should have and the best location of the center of curvature of the reflecting mirror.

   When it is desired that the "illumination" of the reflector be colored, a thin disc of glass or other suitable material colored correspondingly may be interposed between the planar posterior surface of the lens and the reflector mirror, or well the lens itself can be made of colored glass.

   The reflectors 2 can be mounted in a frame or support 17 by sealing them in cement 19 introduced in recesses made in the frame or support and affecting the shape of the letters of the word, or that of the design or other inscription which is to attract attention, the lens shoulders serving to hold the reflectors in the cement.

   The reflectors can be mounted in a frame or support in any other suitable manner. For example, they can be provided with ears allowing them to be fixed to the frame or support by means of screws, or they can be introduced from behind into holes or recesses in a plate or front board and keep them there. by means of another plate or board placed behind the first.

   The reflector shown in Figs. 3 and 4 have a socket 12 which can be stamped into a sheet

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 and deep drawn in the shape of a flat bottom cup. this socket fits the back of the lens, encloses the reflecting mirror 10 and forms a base on which the reflector can stand upright *
The vertical wall or rim 13 of the socket 12 extends over the rim 11 of the reflecting mirror and comprises an annular shoulder 14 on which this reflecting mirror rests. The socket can be secured in place by constricting its wall or flange 13 in close contact with the periphery of the lens.

   Preferably, the socket is partially filled with a plastic material 15 such as putty, cement, plaster or their equivalent and the reflector is pressed into the socket until the reflecting mirror touches the annular shoulder 14, the upset plastic material filling the space will enter wall or rim 13 of the socket and the lens, and serving, after setting or hardening, to hold the socket in place. Recesses 16 can be made in the shoulder 14 to facilitate the passage of the plastic material expelled from the space located under the reflecting mirror into the annular space between the periphery of this mirror and the vertical wall or rim 13 of the socket.

   The socket 13 prevents dust and humidity from reaching the reflective surface of the mirror and prevents the mirror from being damaged by knocks and knocks, It also allows the reflector to be put in place correctly without using a support exterior, when grouped in a frame or tray-shaped support 17, FIG. 8, in which they can be fixed by means of cement or plastic 15 which is poured into the frame after the reflectors have been put in place.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

   In the modified form of reflector shown in FIG. 6, the socket 12 is omitted and, in its place, the flange 11 of the reflecting mirror 10 is extended and turned back at 11 a to form a base on which the reflector can stand. The space below the mircir reflector and between it and the rolled-up rim 11a is preferably filled with plaster or other suitable material.

   In the variant shown in FIG. 7, the reflecting mirror 10 is made in the form of a socket comprising a thin rim 11 intended to enclose the periphery of the lens and a flat base 18 on which the reflector can stand.

   In any case, the planar rear surface 9 of the lens is preferably ground and polished, since it has been found that this considerably increases the reflective properties of the reflector.

   The signs or indicating plates made up of reflectors according to the invention are especially suitable for being placed on the shoulders of roadways and on the facades of buildings with a view to giving warnings and notices to occupants of moving vehicles; used in this way, the signs or placards will be illuminated and made visible at night by the light projected on them by the lanterns of the vehicles.

   The face of the sign or indicator plate, with the exception of the spherical front surfaces of the reflector lenses, may be given a relatively dark color by painting or treating it appropriately to avoid or minimize any untimely reflection.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

   We can equip the. frame or support of a roof or overhanging board to protect the reflectors from rain or both can be tilted slightly as shown in Fig. l, so that the raindrops can fall more easily.
