<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

"improvements in the treatment of coal"
The present invention relates to an improvement or a variant of that which is the subject of patent application No. 261744 filed on November 4, 1925.
One of the embodiments of the process of the main patent application is to first suspend pulverized carbon in an atmosphere of hot gases, which may be oxidizing gases, at a temperature below that at. which the charcoal would be practically charred, and when the particles have lost their ability to adhere to each other, to separate them
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
gases and introduce them into a carbonization zone.
The main purpose of this pretreatment is to ensure that the carbon particles remain as separated as possible during carbonization, in order to ensure the production of a finely divided coke or semi-coke.
According to the present invention, it is not necessary, in order to achieve this object, to subject all of the carbonized coal to the preliminary treatment, since it suffices that a suitable proportion of this coal be thus treated and then be mixed. to the rest of the charcoal to be charred.
The accompanying diagrams explain the invention.
Fig. 1 shows one form of the installation.
Fig. 2 shows another form thereof.
In the case of the freezing II, the coal is pulverized in a crusher 1. A cyclone separator 2 is arranged to receive the pulverized coal which is brought to it from the crusher by the pipe 3 and the ccmpressor fan 4 mounted in this pipe. Part of the air used in the crusher and in the coal transport is returned from the cyclone separator 2 to the pulverizer mill 1, through pipe 5. An exhaust or outlet pipe for excess gas. possible air is provided in 6.
The pulverized coal which is separated in the cyclone separator passes into a tank or hopper 7 from where it is transported by any suitable feeder 8 to the pretreatment retort 9, this arrangement of the parts is known, ,
A heater 10 heats the air or any other suitable gaseous fluid during its journey to reach the interior of the pretreatment retort 9, this air being discharged into the pipes 12, 13 and 14 by the fan 11. The gaseous fluid passing through part 13 is
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
indirectly heated in the heater 10 and arrives in the retort 9 at a temperature preferably equal to. about 8000 F.
In the pretreatment retort 9, the heated gaseous fluid, preferably air, flows from bottom to top in the opposite direction of the sprayed material moving up and down, introduced at the top of the retort, and the gaseous fluid is finally extracted from the top of the retort by means of the piping 15 by the aspirating fan 16. The upward movement of the hot gases in the retort is sufficient to delay the descent under the action of the gravity of the carbon particles. moving downwardly, so that sufficient time is available to effect the desired pretreatment of the carbon, in order to cause or ensure the destruction of the adhesive, cohesive or agglutinating properties which coal can own.
A similar pretreatment is described in main patent N 329,995 filed November 4, 1925.
The pre-treated carbon settles in the pretreatment retort 9 and is transported from there to a carbonisation retort 17 by a mixing and conveying mechanism 18 and a feed hopper 19 From a hopper 20, a roughly determined amount of raw or untreated coal is introduced into the mixing and conveying mechanism 18, under conditions such that the raw coal and the previously treated coal can mix thoroughly and evenly. before their introduction into the carbonization retort 17.
In this retort 17, the mixture is subjected to carbonization, for example to low temperature carbonization in which the general temperatures are sufficient to substantially reduce the hydrocarbon content.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
volatiles of the mixture. this carbonization retort 17 is shown here purely schematically. It must include the mechanisms for loading and unloading, if its operation is to be continuous.
The figures of, reference to fig. 2 have the dismal meaning that. fig. 1 as long as they are the same. In the case of this figure 2, a second pulverizer mill 21 and a conjugate cyclone separator 22 which delivers the pulverized raw coal into the hopper 20 are provided.
The carbonization retort 23 is shown under the truss of a vertical retort provided with a feed mechanism 24, a starting pipe 25 for gas and an unloading mechanism 26. In this case, vertical carbonization retort 23, any suitable degree of carbonization can be achieved, and by introducing the treated coal with the untreated coal, as specified, the tendency of the particles undergoing treatment is to join. or sticking to each other is greatly reduced.
A description of a particular method of treating coal in one or other of the forms of installation shown is given above; if we take, for example, a crude coal having a volatile hydrocarbon content of 34 ° and an oxygen content of 7.5% 'and subject it to pulverization and a preliminary heating treatment, by example to a treatment with hot gases rising in a retort 9 and having an average temperature of 6000 to 650 F. - temperature in the air - this can be done so that the air retards the precipitation of the parts - pulverized charcoal particles, sufficient to allow the destruction of any binding properties to the charcoal and increase in,
at the same time slightly the oxygen content thereof, for example about 1%, and so as not to change
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
to manage the general state of division of the particles thus treated only slightly and to reduce the volatile hydrocarbon content only slightly, ie to a value of approximately between 30 and 32%. The coal thus treated is then mixed, preferably while still hot, with the raw coal and the mixture is then subjected to an appropriate carbonization at low temperature, under the effect of which the. volatile content of the mixture is significantly reduced.
In the pretreatment, the temperatures destroying the agglutinating properties are preferably between 500 and 7000 F, while the coal is in the pulverized form and it falls under the action of gravity in the opposite direction of gas. hot that rise, for a period not exceeding sixty seconds.
From the above, we will denote by a. ) that the pretreatment provides a product, or may be an intermediate product, in which the binding properties have been appreciably destroyed, in other words that a product is obtained practically free from the binding characteristics, b.) that this product is mixed with the raw pulverized charcoal in such a way that the mixture has at most only limited agglutinating properties, and c.) this mixture is subjected to the carbonization or to the distillation described, for example to carbonization. tion or distillation of the kind used for the production of low temperature semi-coke.
When the mixture consists of pre-treated pulverized coal and crude pulverized coal and left '. fall in the opposite direction of hot carbonization gases rising, the carbonization operation will be completed by
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
the direct action of gases having average temperatures of approximately 1000 F and for a period not exceeding 60 seconds. ...
