Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

  Special composition and means of combining its elements in order to produce articles comparable to ceramic products
Ceramic products used in the construction of buildings and dwellings, in the decoration of gardens and other uses, in order to resist atmospheric influences, require firing at a very high temperature after their shaping, followed by slow cooling; they are therefore very expensive and therefore used with restrictions.

   The present invention relates to a special mineral composition which, suitably worked at low temperature to bring it to the state of a homogeneous semi-fluid paste, can - in this state - be cast or molded and produced after cooling down to l. 'air free articles or

 articles comparable to ceramic products in terms of color, weight, frost resistance and impermeability. This composite material is likely to take a beautiful polish, to be engraved, sculpted, cut or otherwise decorated; moreover, as it can be cast in the form of slabs, plates or panels, it is suitable for making pavings, panels or plates which can be used as wall coverings or other walls.

   This mineral composition consists of a meltable material such as sulfur, incompressible and resistant infusible elements such as flint, cement, kaolin, agglomerating products such as asphalt, bitumen, borax, oxidizing products such as oxides iron, iron filings, and finally non-combustible binding materials such as asbestos filaments or asbestos powder.

   Practice has shown that a composition in which the aforementioned products entered according to the origins of said products in the following proportions, gave homogeneous, strong and non-porous materials competing as resistance to wear by friction and to atmospheric agents with the best ceramic products and being able to replace these products in the generality of their applications. sulfur from 12 to 24 kilograms cement preferably with slow setting 45 to 34 asphalt or bitumen 12 to 15 flint or washed sand 10 to 12 iron oxide or iron filings 2 to 3 - borax or sodium borate 3 to 1 - kaolin or refractory clay 9 to 12- filaments or asbestos powder 6 to 4 - five percent of composition.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

   Apart from the sulfur, the various elements of the composition are preferably brought beforehand to the state of fine grains or powder to facilitate their mixing and allow their agglomeration and to achieve a homogeneous composition by kneading.

   To intimately associate these elements, start by bringing the sulfur to the liquid state or more exactly to the semi-fluid state by melting it as much as possible away from air at a temperature of about 100 to 120 degrees centigrade and in this state we first incorporate the cement, then the asphalt to restore fluidity to the mass.

   Then, the flint and the kaolin mixed beforehand are added by incorporating in these elements iron oxide powder and asbestos powder during the mixing, and by restoring fluidity to the mixture during the last phases. of this mixing with an addition of sodium borate; the hot homogeneous pasty mass is then poured either into molds if one wants, with the composition, to form vases, balusters, various objects, or on flat surfaces, between rules, if one wants to obtain slabs, panels or plaques; left to itself, it cools slowly in the open air and acquires resistance and impermeability similar to those of ceramic products. It can then be used immediately or after a more or less prolonged rest.

   It will be appreciated that during the preparation of the mixture of the aforementioned products, it is possible, without departing from the original features of the invention, to incorporate one material into the semi-liquid sulfur before another. It will also be possible to remove, in some cases, borax and asbestos powder.
