<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
'l'hélicoptère vers l'avant pour obtenir une composante horizontale de la traotion dirigée dans le sens de la vitesse.Pour oontreba- lancer le couple de renversement et pouvoir produire des couples de commande dans le'sens voulu,l'hélicoptère est muni d'un dispo- sitif spécial permettant de modifier les angles d'attaque des pales soit en les augmentant ou diminuant de la même grandeur pour tou- tes les pales, soit en augmentant l'angle d'attaque au moment où la pale se trouve à droite et en le diminuant quand elle se trouve à gauche ou inversement.
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

To counterbalance the torque of the reactions of the air on the whole craft, most helicopters so far built have an even number of propellers, half of which turn right and half left. However, this arrangement simultaneously cancels out the gyroscopic action and a similar aerodynamic effect which makes an isolated propeller stable.
The present invention relates to a helicopter designed in such a way as to counterbalance the torque of the reactions without recourse to the propellers rotating in opposite directions and, consequently, to take advantage of the stabilizing action of a set of propellers rotating in the same direction.
This helicopter has two or more propellers all rotating in the same direction.The axes of these propellers do not, intersect and are not parallel, the set of pulls, of all the propellers is reduced to a force equal and opposite, to; weight of the helicopter and at an equal and opposite torque to the sum of the reaction torques of all the propellers. These conditions can be realized in an infinite number of ways. The present invention relates more particularly to their realization. in the case of two or more nearly identical propellers arranged symmetrically around. of the center of gravity.
The fig.l shows in plan, fig. 3 seen from the side, and fig. 4 seen: from the front, a helicopter with two propellers H1 and Eg They rotate in the direction indicated by the arrows f and communicate to the fuselage F the traction T1 and T2 and the torques M and M2 . The axes of
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Propellers lie in vertical planes perpendicular to the fuselage plane of symmetry and are tilted vertically at angles # 1 and # 2.
In the case of symmetry, we will have:
EMI2.1
77; = T .N1. - '' ', - efz = <: G, - and the equilibrium equations will give @ equal to the weight
EMI2.2
and 2TGsa, .., = 2M case from which one deduces the angle of inclination of the axes
EMI2.3
In the same way, we find the angle. for the case of the three propellers represented by FIG. 2 and for any other number of propellers.
We will describe below how the helicopter can be constructed constructively, based on the principle explained above and shown in Figures 1, 3 and 4.
In the fuselage F is the engine M, the rotation of which is transmitted via the clutch E to the conical gear Ci, from the vertical shaft v to the bevel gear C2 and to the two-shafts. horizontals h, which transmit in the nodes N the rotation to the propeller-bearing bells.
In addition, the fuselage is provided with a landing gear A, movable auxiliary surfaces, horizontal S1 and vertical S2, helping to maintain stability during translation and
EMI2.4
all necessary accessories, including controls, engine installation, pilot seat P ,. etc ...
During the translational movement which takes place in the direction V the propellers rotate in the direction f (fig. 1 and 3), the left blade is subjected to a greater speed than the right and a non-variable pitch propeller would be subjected to a reversing torque tending to raise the left part and lower the right.
Moreover, to overcome passive resistance, it would be necessary to incline
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
'' the helicopter forwards to obtain a horizontal component of the traotion directed in the direction of the speed. To counteract the reversal torque and be able to produce control torques in the desired direction, the helicopter is equipped a special device allowing the angles of attack of the blades to be modified either by increasing or decreasing them by the same magnitude for all the blades, or by increasing the angle of attack when the blade is located on the right and decreasing it when it is on the left or vice versa.
Therefore, the following maneuvers can be performed
1) Roll torque - giving the left blades a different angle than the right.
2) Pitch torque - by making all the blades of the forward propeller an angle greater or less than the angle of the blades of the rear propeller.
3) Ascent or descent.- by modifying by the same quantity with constant number of turns, the angle of attack of all the blades.
In addition, by rotating in the opposite direction around the axis of the shafts h the propeller housings, it is possible to modify the angle and to initiate or suppress a rotational movement about the vertical axis. The devices making it possible to carry out the above maneuvers are found in the nodes N (fig.3) and are shown in detail in figs. 5 and 6.
The frame (1) rigidly attached to the fuselage carries two bearings (2) on which a casing in the form of an inverted T (3) is pivoted, additionally linked to the frame by a tensioner with opposing threads (4) which allows the inclination of the housing (angle). The housing carries the bearings (5) in which the shaft h turns (see also fig. 3) carrying the bevel pinion (6). The pinion (6) meshes with a crown forming one body with the bell (7) which carries four arms (8) and which turns around the housing (3) by means of the bearings and stops (9)
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The arms (8) support the propeller blades (10) by means of the bearings and stops (11). At the origin of the blades (10) are rigidly linked, the horns (12) which allow to modify the incidence of the blades.
The horns (12) form part of the articulated parallelograms to which the rollers (14) are attached by the fingers (13).
The rollers (14) are supported by the springs (15) and the aerodynamic action ensured by a suitable choice of the position of the pivot axis of the blade in relation to the center of pressure on the blades, against the path The raceway (16) is linked at (I7) by a two-lug articulation of the sleeve (18) which can slide without turning on the housing (3). In this way the raceway can go up and down or tilt by modifying the incidence of the blades.
The tendency of the raceway to descend under the action of the springs (15) is balanced by the spring (15a) compressed between the housing (3) and the bush (18).
To allow control of the position of the raceway, it has two lugs (19) which, by means of articulated rods (20), follow the movement of the ends of the levers (21) pivoting around the points (22) on the housing ( 3) .At the other ends of the levies (2I) are articulated the rods (23) which in turn act on the horns (2,4) fixed on the axes (25) supported by the consoles (26) integral with the frame (1). ).
Fig. (7) shows in perspective, schematically, the way in which the control movements are transmitted from the pilot's seat to the axes (25) (fig. 5.6 and 7). The second end of the tubes (25) carries the horns (26) acting by the rods (27) on the bent pieces (28) articulated on a pair of arms of the cross (29) whose other pair of vras pivot in the bearings (30) fixed to the fuselage . The two parts (28) are linked by a tensioner with opposing threads (31) making it possible to vary by the same size and in the
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
same direction the incidences of all the blades of the two propellers. The handle of one of the parts (28) carries the handle (32) on which the pilot's hand acts. By advancing it, the angles of attack are reduced by the rear propeller and we increase those of the forward propeller.
By tilting it produces a torque which tilts the helicopter in the direction of the inclination of the stick.
The rotation of the tensioner bushes (4) modifying the angle is effected by a cable wound on the bushes (4) passing through the pulleys (34) and attached to the lifting beam (35). This rudder bar, as in the case of an airplane, pivots about a vertical axis (36) and is actuated by the pilot's feet.
In summary, the invention claims the following novel characteristics:
1 Stability of the helicopter by the gyroscopic and aerodynamic effect of propellers rotating in the same direction by counterbalancing the reaction torque by a suitable inclination of the traction axes.
2 Application of the principle stated on p.l for the case of two or more nearly identical propellers arranged approximately symmetrically around the center of gravity.
3 Achieving horizontal flight of a helicopter with propellers rotating in the same direction by tilting the assembly forward and removing the lateral overturning torque by increasing the incidence of the blades going with the wind and decreasing by the one against the wind.
4 Arrangement:, general of transmissions, stabilizing surfaces and other components of a two-propeller helicopter, as described above.
5 Mechanism for transmitting the rotation of the horizontal shaft to the propellers making it possible to modify the incidence of the blades by moving a raceway on which the rollers roll
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
related to the propeller blades, as described above.
6 Position control of the track corresponding to the roll and pitch from the pilot's seat by a single stick with the ability to rise and fall by acting on a tensioner linked to the same stick.
7 Control of the tensioner modifying the torque around the vertical axis by a lifting beam.
