<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

Clutch for motor vehicles, cranes, winches and the like -
This invention relates to expansion type clutches suitable for use in motor vehicles, cranes, winches and the like,
According to the present invention, one of the clutch members is in the form of a cylindrical drum, while the other member carries shoes or bands arranged to be brought in oontaot with this drum by means of eccentrics articulated to the clutch member carrying the abots and provided with substantially radial arms projecting internally, resiliently maintained in tangential contact with a diameter airing member

variable, such as a cam or a sliding conical member.
in one embodiment of the invention a clutch has a shoe holder member provided with four arched shoes mounted in pairs on two diametrically opposed pivots and arranged to be expanded like an internal expansion brake to make frictional contact with another clutch member which corresponds to the brake drum.
The shoes are arranged to be actuated in the manner described in English Patent N 250,440 of July 15, 1925, that is to say by means of eccentrics acting on half-plates formed by blocks in contact with the ends. adjacent pairs of shoes but can slide obliquely on them @
Each group of eccentrics is provided with an actuator arm which extends approximately radially inside the clutch and is maintained in tangential contact with a conical sleeve, sliding axially to the clutch. If desired, each of these actuating arms may be provided with a friction pad of anti-friction metal, or other suitable material, at the point of contact with the conical member.
The two actuator arms can be connected together on opposite sides of the oonic member by means of rigid springs which hold the oontaot between the arms and the conical member and thus serve to help the shoe springs to release the valve. clutch when the oonic organ is removed.
Oaaque shoe, at its articulated end, may include a notch whose direction extends obliquely to the radius at this point, this notch being arranged to receive and slide on a block articulated to the member carrying the shoes of the clutch. in the manner described in English patent 250,440 above.
On each pivot are mounted two separate blocks, one for each of the overlapping shoes at that point, and the arrangement is such that the notches in the two adjacent shoe ends cross substantially at right angles.

The blocks jj are furthermore provided obuaun with two ears kk which extend partially over the bodies of the adjacent shoes ci 2 dl 2 on the side thereof remote from the spider so as to prevent lateral displacement of the shoes .
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
On a diametral plane perpendicular to that containing the pivots ee and on opposite sides of the shaft a are arranged two mm pins, each bearing two pairs of eccentrics nn formed on the ends of the pins which are remote from the main part of the shaft a, these eccentrics nn being arranged to engage against pairs of half-plates oo comprising oblique faoes on the sides remote from the eccentrics nn so as to be able to abut and slide on the corresponding surfaces provided on the adjacent ends of the clogs as described in British Patent No. 250,440 above.
The intermediate part of each spindle m m is threaded to receive a nut p while the end remote from the eccentrics n is shaped into a square or flat as in ..! in a setting buffalo.
The mm pins are each handled by an actuating arm r clamped at one end between the eccentrics n and the nut p and they extend through a collar 0 keyed to the pin m and having on one side an extension t arranged to be received in rotation in an appropriate opening of the spider b and on the other side an oiroonferential series of radial teeth u which engage in corresponding teeth formed on the arm ± in order to facilitate adjustment of this arm r with respect to the eccentrics n.
The free end of each arm r is provided with a hemisphere or a roller.! laterally directed, in suitable maceration, arranged to engage against a conical or spheroidal surface of a control member or sleeve w which is rotatably mounted on the shaft ja and is urged towards the spider b by means of a strong spring x. the control member w is also provided with two collars yy between which engage the ends of a fork z mounted on a shaft 10 arranged to be tilted by means of a clutch pedal 11 or other suitable means .
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
The outer surface of the shoes c1 c2 d1 d2 may be covered with a layer of suitable material 12 such as leather or other similar material as used for brake linings, these surfaces being disposed, when the clutch is in operation. engagement position, to be kept in frictional contact with the internal surface of a drum (not shown) carried by the other shaft (not shown), for example the drive shaft, which is co-axial with the tree has
Fig. 4 shows a variant of the invention arranged for use in connection with countershafts of machine tools and the like.
The construction is much the same as that shown in the previous figures, except that two curved arms 14, 14 replace the arms! ! and are arranged to be drawn towards each other by means of tension springs 15,15 secured to lugs 16,16 near the inner end of the arms and arms 14,14 and connected by means of bolts 17/17 at their other end, with the outer end of the arms 14,14,
Halfway between the springs 15,15 the hemispheres or rollers 18,18 are mounted one on clicks arm 14 so as to be able to engage against a sliding sleeve 19 comprising a cone 20 or the like, movable on the 'shaft a by means of an SI fork located at the end of an em- lever.
clutch 22 of usual construction.
In each of the embodiments shown the pins m m carrying the eccentrics are normally stressed, in one case by the spring z, the cone w, the rollers v v and the arms !! and in the other case by the springs 15, 16 and the arms 14, 14, to rotate the eccentrics n n so as to separate the half-plates 0 o and
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
to bring the shoes c1 c2e1 dz to come against the drum of the clutch and consequently the terabour and the spider b, with the members carried by aux, turn normally designed in one piece. when the pedal or the clutch lever,.
depending on the case is actuated, the force of the springs x or! 5, 15, is absorbed by the sliding sleeve of the actuating cone, and the eccentrics nn are * insi turned to release the shoes ci c2 d1d2 allowing thus the drum and its shaft to rotate relative to the spider b and its shaft a. , o92
Thanks to the multiple shoes c1 d1 d2 and to the oblique bearing surfaces between these shoes and their respective half-plates oo, the pressure between the shoes and the drum is substantially equalized around the entire circumference, thus rendering the action of 1 * extremely uniform clutch.
As shown in figures 1, 2 and 3, the force of the springs f f is relied on to disengage the clutch and maintain the elastic contact between the arms ± ± and the cone w. but, if desired, this action can be assisted by springs such as 15,15 in FIG. 4 between the arms r r.
It should be understood that although the invention has been described and shown with respect to normally engaged clutches, the invention also applies to clutches, for example winches, hoists and the like, which are normally disengaged, that is to say the parts of which are engaged only when the useful power must be transmitted. Such variations would simply require a slight change in the control mechanism of the embodiments described above.
