 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 est une at1iosnhèra qui a été codifiée par l'action d iü:. réactifs, savoir um oxyde alcd.li.üo-t8rreux tel que la. ÛL1i.<:C, et une matière carbonée telle qu'un   mélange     carburant     ';puis;

       contenant une proportion de carbone libre et un constituant incombustible produisant un effet d'amortissement sur la réac- tion, l'acier n'est pas décarburé par Le traitemetn thrique et la répartition zônique non uniforme du carbone dans la masse ne se produit pas, ou bien si ces défauts se produisent, c'est seulement dans une mesure -fortement réduite en comparai- Son du traitement thermique dans une atmosphère noramle, Ci est-

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 10>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 11>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 12>

  Improvements in the heat treatment of steel ,.

   The present invention relates to the heat treatment of steel and relates particularly to the treatment of steel alloys such as tool steels for example.

   Steel and articles of steel today fabricated frequently exhibit defects as a result of non-uniform distribution of carbon in the mass, resulting in an outer zone of decarbonized steel, an inner central zone of a pearlitic nature, and a zone high carbon steel intermediate. This zonic heterogeneity of the structure is usually accompanied by a state of internal instability and it has been found, in the case of rolled steel parts such as rails, to be the main cause of instability.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 Conveniences usually encountered and consisting of excessive ripple and wear in service.

   Another drawback frequently associated with the presence of this subdivision of the structure into zones is the tendency for the steel part to deform as a result of internal stresses and strains.

   The defects indicated above can occur during any heat treatment of the steel after the production thereof, for example in the case of an ingot, a billet or the like, the defect may occur in the pit or in the reheating furnace if the steel is subjected to reheating at any time.

   In fact, under present-day industrial conditions, virtually any heat treatment to which steel or a steel object is subjected results in the indicated uneven distribution of carbon and hence in zonic heterogeneity of the carbon. structure with its detrimental effects on the fa-

 jon whose steel behaves in use.
The inventors have discovered that if the atmosphere surrounding the steel during the heat treatment of the latter

       containing a proportion of free carbon and an incombustible constituent producing a damping effect on the reaction, the steel is not decarburized by the thermal treatment and the non-uniform zonic distribution of carbon in the mass does not occur, or if these defects do occur, it is only to a greatly reduced extent compared to heat treatment in a normal atmosphere, Ci is-

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 i.e. in an unmodified atmosphere such as that which would be obtained without the use of modifying reagents,

   for example, in the case of an oven treatment, the atmosphere ordinarily prevailing in this oven.

   It has therefore been found that if, in the case of the heat treatment of a steel ingot in a pit, for example, this heat treatment is carried out in the presence of a mixture of two modifying reagents of the type indicated, a appropriate amount of this mixture being introduced into the furnace and maintained in it during the treatment, the ingot is not decarburized nor its structure made non-uniform with regard to the distribution of carbon, it was further found that in these conditions, the ingot, the billet or any other similar object can be left in the pit to be heated or in any other furnace for a practically indefinite time, in any case for a much longer period than hitherto, without see the detrimental effect of overheating on steel.

   Another drawback frequently, if not invariably, associated with the heat treatment of steel as it is presently carried out is the considerable formation of scales on the surface of the steel or the steel object. , which is naturally due to oxidation by the ambient atmosphere during the heat treatment. It has been found that this disadvantage, like those indicated above, is largely if not entirely eliminated and that the steel or steel article heat treated under the characteristic conditions of the present invention is substantially free of 'oxidation.

   The above mentioned heat treatment of steel in a heating pit. The new effect can @

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 can be obtained with any heat treatment, however, and is not limited to heat treatment inside a heating chamber such as an oven.

   For example, in the case of the manufacture of steel rails in which the finished rail is ordinarily transported from the la- minator to the cooler after the last rolling operation for cooling there, a uniformity can be achieved. - complete the structure and avoid discarouration and oxidation by burying the hot rail in a mixture of the two modifying reagents indicated above.

   As is apparent from the foregoing, the term "normal atmosphere" as used above refers to the atmosphere which ordinarily surrounds an article of steel in any of the processes normally employed for the heat treatment of steel by direct contact with hot furnace gases, and it is not limited to the atmosphere of a pit to be reheated, of a recanauffer furnace and equivalent apparatus.

   In addition, it matters little whether the heat treatment is a treatment involving raising or lowering the temperature of the steel.

   According to the present invention, a method of heat treatment of steel in which the steel is heated by direct contact with furnace gases is characterized in that it is carried out in a contact modified furnace gas atmosphere. both with an alkaline earth oxide and a carbonaceous material having substantially no carburizing action on the steel.

   The heat treatment can advantageously be carried out in the presence of a mixture of the alkaline earth oxide and the carbonaceous material.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

   According to another characteristic, the carbonaceous material may consist of free carbon associated with an incombustible material in sufficient proportion to make the carbonaceous material substantially non-combustible for steel, it may consist for example of a spent fuel mixture or of ash. gasifier.

   The modifying reagents can be introduced into the furnace so that the steel is heated in their presence, and the modification of the furnace atmosphere takes place in the furnace:
It has also been found that for best results the alkaline earth oxide should be employed in a defined proportion to the carbon modifying material and that there is also a minimum allowable percent carbon. It has been found, for example, that it is desirable to employ an amount of alkaline earth oxide equal to at least 10% by weight of the combined amounts of oxide and carbonaceous material, and that the amount of free carbon contained in this material must be at least equal to 4% of the combined weight of the two modifier materials.

   The amount of oxide employed should preferably be between 10% and 50% by weight of the combined amounts of the two modifier materials; the amount of free carbon should be between 4% and 20%.

   According to other characteristics of the invention, of the two modifying reagents used for the -process, the alkaline earth oxide is employed in an amount equal to at least 10% by weight of the combined amounts of alkaline earth oxide and of material. carbonaceous and the amount of free carbon contained therein is at least 4% of the combined weight of the two modifiers. Preferably, the amount of lime used is between 1.0 and 50% by weight of the combined amounts of the two reactants and the free carbon content of

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 the carbonaceous material is between 4 and 20% by weight of the sum of the two reactants.

   It has also been found by experience that the new characteristic effects of the invention can be promoted by carrying out the heat treatment of the steel in a modified furnace atmosphere, as indicated, and in the presence of a material. , such as, for example, scrap steel sheet (especially scrap tinplate), coils or spirals of steel wire, steel scrap of any kind, for example turnings, the filings of milling chips, workshop scraps, etc., which is easily oxidizable, does not produce any harmful reaction on the steel under treatment at the temperature employed, and has a shape such as to present at 1 '' surrounding atmosphere an oxidizable surface of large dimension relative to its mass.

   The degree of decarburization and scale formation appears to be approximately proportional to the metal surface exposed. Consequently, a false increase in area as it results from the presence of material of the type indicated above reduces the possible degree of oxidation of the steel per unit area, and therefore also in a corresponding measure, the extent of decarburization.

   According to another characteristic of the invention, the steel is therefore subjected to the heat treatment in a modified atmosphere as indicated, in the presence of a material such as that mentioned above for example, which is easily oxidizable, n ' exerts no harmful reaction on the steel. treatment at the temperature employed and has a shape allowing it to present to the surrounding atmosphere an oxidizable surface of large size relative to its mass.

   The quantities of steel shavings, scrap steel sheet, coils or spirals of steel wire, etc., of lime or other alkaline earth oxide and spent fuel mixture or other carbonaceous material to be employed will depend on, as will be noted, the circumstances in each given case. We find, for example, that the quantities vary with the kind of steel treated, i.e. with the analysis of the steel, particularly with regard to the possibility of oxidation, the weight of steel in any furnace, the area of the steel exposed to the gases relative to the volume of gas supplied to the furnace, the shape of the furnace and ultimately the actual chemical composition of the furnace gases themselves.

   As will be seen, all these factors are variable factors and, as they are all important from the point of view of the actual quantities of scrap steel or equivalent material to be employed in any given case, it will be readily understood that it is practically impossible to stipulate a rule governing the quantities of material to be used. In practice, it is a simple matter for a worker carrying out the operation to determine by judgment or by trials and adjustments the appropriate quantities to use. In addition, there are certain indications, such as the appearance of the flame coming out of the oven and the general appearance of the oven, which will guide the operator in determining whether a sufficient quantity of the modifying reagents is employed.

   The use of modifying reagents involves the presence in the furnace of a reducing atmosphere and, in general, the appearance of the furnace will readily indicate whether the quantity of modifying reagents used is sufficient.

   A typical example of a carbon modifying reagent the use of which is contemplated according to the present invention was cited, a spent fuel mixture. This is understood to mean a fuel mixture composed, for example, of three parts of powdered birch charcoal, two parts of pulverized horn charcoal and two parts of pulverized animal black, which has been used until it can no longer be used for carburetion. The carbonaceous material can be any material other than a spent fuel mixture. It may for example consist of boiler ash or gasifier ash still containing a suitable proportion (for example 5 to 15%) of combustible carbon.

   It has been found that the special heat treatment forming the subject of the present invention can be employed not only with a view to avoiding during the manufacture of a steel article the structural defects already indicated above, but also to eliminate these defects after manufacture, it has been found that if steel or a steel object, exhibiting the indicated defects due to decarburization and zonic heterogeneity of its structure, is treated with hot, preferably passing through a series of temperatures embracing the change points of the steel, in an atmosphere modified in accordance with the present invention, these defects are considerably if not entirely eliminated, the structure being made uniform throughout the mass , as regards the distribution of carbon,

   and the carbon content of the steel being reduced to the value it should have had if there had been no decarburization during the previous heat treatment to which the steel was subjected.

   The invention is susceptible of wide applications and furthermore may undergo wide modifications as to proportions, temperatures and other conditions of application.

   Below is a detailed example showing the invention applied to the manufacture of steel billets for various applications.

   Following the normal practice in use hitherto in workshops, the steel ingot is demolded and heated in pits to be reheated before rolling. The heating time in these pits varies from six to ten hours, depending on the demands of the work. At the end of this period, the ingot is sent to the roughing and rolling trains until the required section has been obtained, then it is sent to the hot shears where the offcuts are cut above and below, and finally to the store.

   To carry out the process according to the present invention, one can proceed as follows.

   A mixture consisting of 1 part by weight of lime and 8 parts by weight of boiler ash containing about 10% combustible carbon is prepared. This mixture is allowed to dry for two days before using it. No special measures are taken to reduce the particles of this mixture to any defined size.

   The mixture is spread over a thickness of 15 = cm. on the oven floor before lighting it. On top of the bed thus formed, steel turnings are spread to a further thickness of 5 cm. When loading each ingot, four shovelfuls of the mixture are thrown on it at the same time @

 <Desc / Clms Page number 10>

 only two shovels of turns. In addition, a certain amount of material is placed on the edge of the gas inlet ports, so that the incoming gases must pass through the small pile of material left at the end of the ports.

  After heating under these conditions, the ingot is processed in the normal way, i.e. sent to the roughing and rolling trains, then the scraps are cut at each end and the finished part is sent to the store. .

   The approximate weight loss between the metal loaded into the pits and the finished billets, including the offcuts, was prior to application of the present process about 4% by weight. The figures given below relate to ingots taken in a load treated according to the present invention.

In addition, the steel thus treated exhibits fewer defects attributable to the ingot and is generally of better quality.

   According to another example of application of the invention, one can proceed as follows to harden steel files.

   Previously, limes were processed in a gas-heated muffle furnace. At the end of the treatment these files were severely chipped and also showed local areas of decarburization. By proceeding according to the present method, we

 <Desc / Clms Page number 11>

 treats the limes in the same heated muffle as gas, under exactly the same conditions, but in the presence of a mixture of 2 parts lime and 3 parts of spent fuel material containing about 15% free carbon when it is introduced into the oven, this mixture being placed in the muffle in a layer of about 15 cms. thick on the bottom of the muffle and the files being placed on this bed.

   At the end of the hardening operation, the files removed are suitably hardened, free of scales and soft spots, ie decarburizing surfaces.

   Likewise, hot tool steel can be treated in an electric furnace for the purpose of hardening it, by modifying the atmosphere of the furnace according to the present invention or by not modifying it. In the latter case, that is, by treating the tool steel in the ordinary way, considerable oxidation and local decarburization of the steel is obtained.

  The same treatment repeated on another load of the same steel in the presence of a mixture of lime and boiler ash, the latter component containing about 15.6% combustible carbon and the two components being present in approximately the relative proportions 40 to 60 results in proper hardening of the steel with complete suppression of scale formation and decarburization of the steel.

   The indicated mixture of lime and boiler ash is placed in a layer of about 10 cm. thick on the bottom of the furnace and after placing the steel in the furnace, introduce a new charge of the mixture without packing it around the steel in the space between the steel and the walls of the furnace = Besides the mixture of lime and boiler ash, a certain quantity of steel turnings is introduced into the furnace. These are mixed with the layer of the mixture of lime and boiler ash on the floor of the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 12>

 furnace and steel spirals suspended from the sides and roof of the furnace occupying the space around and above the treated steel load.

   The spirals are suspended at intervals of about 10 cm. across the vault of the oven.

   In addition, scrap steel is occasionally introduced into the furnace during processing.

   The invention has been found to be particularly advantageous for the heat treatment of armor plates, for example with a view to hardening these plates and increasing their strength.

   As indicated above, the invention is applicable to heat treatment in any kind of furnace, whether it is an electric furnace, a gas furnace or a reverberation furnace.
