   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

    Procède d'épuration des diatillata, à bas point d'ébul- lition, d'huile de pétrole ou d'huile minérale.

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

    Purification process of diatillata, at low boiling point, petroleum oil or mineral oil.

   The present invention relates to a method for purifying distillation products, a. low-boiling point of petroleum or mineral oil by refining which consists of treatment with aluminum chloride at temperatures below 35 C.

   It is known, with a view to eliminating materials which become resinous or cause separations, to treat with salts of heavy metals, having a conditioning action or a catalytic action, the fractions

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 petroleum oil or mineral oil obtained by decomposition. For example, heating the distillate for about 10 hours with zinc chloride is used for this purpose. Under the influence of such condensing agents, the impurities leading to resinification are transformed into products with a high boiling point, from which the purified hydrocarbons can be separated, for example by distillation.

     Oh also proposed to treat high boiling petroleum oil fractions with aluminum chloride at temperatures below 100 C, mainly 65 0, which produces an increase in viscosity and also in point. flammability. This mainly involves the refining of residues resulting from the distillation of low-boiling point oils obtained by decomposition under pressure (cracking), residues which are intended to serve as lubricating oils. The removal of saturated npn hydrocarbons having a tendency to re-skinning is intended to increase viscosity. This refining of high-boiling petroleum oils can only be achieved by the use of temperatures above 65 0.

  At lower temperatures, the operation is too slow and the action is incomplete. the use of temperatures below 100 ° C. is made necessary because at higher temperatures other catalytic effects occur, not envisaged, such as the transformation of high boiling point oils into low d point oils. 'boiling, which deny undesirable when processing lubricating oils.

   When treating low boiling point fractions of petroleum oils and mineral oils,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 the problem arises otherwise in that the conversion of low boiling point constituents to high boiling and heavier hydrocarbons must be combated as far as possible. It is therefore necessary to completely eliminate the impurities which have a bad odor and which by resinification cause the formation of colored matter, which separate, without incidentally occurring to a considerable extent polymerization phenomena.

   However, it has been found that this object can be achieved very completely by a short-term treatment of the low-boiling point distillates with aluminum chloride at low temperature. In any case, the temperature must not exceed during the treatment 35 C. It is therefore advantageous to work without the addition of heat and it must be cooled when inside the liquid the temperature rises above 35. C because of the heat of reaction. It is surprisingly found that the low boiling point hydrocarbons are completely freed, by the action of aluminum chloride at such low temperatures, of the unpleasant odor and resinifying impurities.

   In addition, the formation of polymerization products with a higher boiling point and a higher specific weight is thus considerably reduced.

   Example of realization
Benzine obtained by decomposition (cracking) having an initial boiling point of 35 C is treated with 5% by weight, of anhydrous aluminum chloride, and left to stand for about 1 hour at room temperature with vigorous stirring. . Aluminum chloride dissolves on separation as an oil

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 brown from which the purified benzine can be separated by decantation. The benzine was then filtered, washed with the ouu and fractionated. The boiling point of the first fraction is higher than the initial boiling point of the crude gasoline thus treated, and this by about 10% on the assumption of a crude product having an initial boiling point. from 3500.

   Light, medium and heavy portions of the gasoline are then diluted in the known manner, which have an extremely pleasant odor and do not darken. When the temperature is reached about 180, the boiling point suddenly rises to about 70. Very minimal amounts of liquid paraffin-like fractions are then distilled off and finally fractions of the lubricating oil type which are also odorless and tasteless. 100 parts of crude benzine are obtained from 90 parts of purified benzine fractions and only about 5 parts of the high boiling point fraction.

   If, on the other hand, one works at temperatures above 35, much larger quantities of the gasoline are converted into higher specific weight and higher boiling products.

   The resulting solution of aluminum chloride in the dark oils which separate can be reused up to ten times with no reduced efficiency, for the refining of low boiling point distillates.

   The process described can not be used only for refining the benzine obtained by decomposition (cracking) but can on the contrary refine gasolines obtained by normal distillation of petroleum oil in the manner indicated. In particular, we get rid of
