 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 voulue.

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Fig. 1 montre en perspective une portion d'une machine caractérisant l'invention, la roue presse-ouvrage ayant été omise pour laisser voir les pièces qui sont derrière;

Fig. 6 et 7 sont des sections suivant les lignes   VI--VI   et VII-VII de fig. 5, avec une pièce en train d'être travaillée;

Fig. 8 montre en coupe une pièce après traitement ;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

Fig. 9 est un plan d'une portion de machine représentée fig. 1 ;   @   Fig. 10 et 11 sont des vues en élévation et fig. 12, des perspectives d'outils resserreurs de modèles différents ;

1  parce que la partie du bord qui est relevée est excessivement étroite; 2  parce.que l'outil resserreur masque beaucoup la vue;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

   Fig. 5 montre un autre modèle d'outil resserreur. Fig.

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 10>

 dans la portion 57 (fig. 14) .

  "Improvements to machines for finishing the edge of certain pieces of leather, in particular those used in the manufacture of shoe uppers"
This invention, relating to the edge finishing of certain sheet materials by the contractile action of heat, is applied herein by way of example to one. machine for finishing the edge of leather uppers or parts of uppers before they are incorporated into the shoe.

   Usually, the machines assigned to this use have a work table, a roller tool called a "ploughshare", a scorching tool installed near the ploughshare, a hammer, Since the grain side of the leather of the rod is usually put outside in the shoe, it is this side that is brought to the table by placing the edge of the work over the ploughshare, which rolls it up and holds the flesh side of the applied leather. against the retightening tool maintained at temperature

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 wanted. The work is pulled into the machine in this position. The marginal part of the flesh side then contracts under the action of the heat given off by the tool located above it, and the flower side folds back towards said tool by curling up.

   Immediately. the hammer, striking the part thus bypassed and become soft and plastic, layer it flat on the body of the work.

   For certain finishing works, it has been found useful to trim the grain side of the edge before presenting the work to the machine. However, whether the part to be finished has been trimmed or not, at least a small portion of the turned up part of the edge will stand between the retightening tool and the share and, as soon as it has finished passing over the latter, the hammer. fold it over the body of the work, the width of the filling thus obtained depending naturally on the quantity of material raised at the place struck by the hammer.

   The present invention aims in principle to improve machines of the type in question. facilitate the processing of a wider variety of untrimmed parts, while ensuring that a fill of uniform width is obtained.

   A first particularity of the new system consists in providing one of the members coming into contact with the work (the share or the retightening tool) with a groove or recess where the relatively thin or relatively thick edge, depending on whether it has been trimmed or left intact, will be introduced when rising. In the species illustrated opposite, it is the retightening tool which is provided with such a housing, formed in its entirety or in part only in its underside.

   This housing is advantageous in that its coming into contact with the field face of the edge limits the degree of recovery of the latter between said tool and the share during the drive of the structure. Until now, the different parts of the edge were sometimes susceptible to stand up and unequal heights between the retightening tool and the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 ploughshare, and as a result the folding effected by the hammer was wider in some places than in others. The present machine overcomes this drawback by meeting the field face of the edge with a wall of the groove formed in the retightening tool, which invariably results in a fill having about the same width almost everywhere.

   It is known that among varnished leathers or the like, there are some which, when exposed to a heat as strong as that emanating from the retightening tool, exudes a sticky and viscous substance. However, in order to prevent this substance from accumulating in too large a quantity on the tool and on the neighboring parts of the machine, the invention provides for the use of a retightening tool of special shape which will allow the exudations of be pulled out by the leather as it moves through the machine.

   The features of the invention set out above, as well as others, including certain construction details and certain combinations of parts, will become apparent from the specification which follows with reference to the accompanying drawing, of which

Fig. 8 shows in section a part after treatment;

Fig. 9 is a plan of a portion of the machine shown in FIG. 1; @ Fig. 10 and 11 are views in elevation and FIG. 12, perspectives of tightening tools of different models;
Fig. 13 and 14 are sections along lines XIII - XIII and XIV - XIV of fig. 12, with a workpiece being worked.

   The parts shown in Figures 2-8 and 10-14 are drawn to an exaggerated scale, being approximately four times larger than life. When the machine is running, it is impossible to see exactly what is going on,
1 because the part of the edge which is raised is excessively narrow; 2 because the retightening tool hides the view a lot;
3 because the machine could not be stopped during the treatment of the leather without damaging the latter at the point of contact by the retightening tool, which is very hot. We must therefore follow on said figures of the drawing. the process of treating leather as it is supposed to take place.

   The current machine is built on the principle of that forming the subject of the Belgian patent of May 31, 1922 (No. 303.507) and the reader is requested to refer to the memorandum appended to this patent for all the details which are lacking here.

   On inspection of Figures 1 to 9, it will be seen that the work advances intermittently on its support table 15, in the direction indicated by the arrow, under the impulse of drive members 17 (upper) and 19 (lower) and a hammer 21. The drive member 19 is driven by a reciprocating movement, while the drive member 17 and the hammer describe rectangular paths in a vertical plane. . In fig.

  9, these three organs have just made a movement of entrafnement to the work and they occupy their left-limit positions. The upper drive member * 17 and the hammer 21 will now rise to move to the right

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 and go down again in order to clamp the structure against the lower drive member 19 which, in the meantime, has returned to its right limit position. After that, all three will return to their left position to train the work. During this training, the piece of leather bears grain at the bottom on the table 15 and on the lower drive member 19, its marginal part pressing on the share 23 which rolls it up a little.

   Near the share is a retightening tool 25 made of chromium-nickel, or other suitable metal, and here having the general shape of a U. This tool is electrically heated.

  For this, its rising branches are coupled respectively to the terminals 27, 29 of an electrical circuit, the amount of current flowing through this circuit can be varied in any suitable way to maintain the tool at the desired temperature.

  This temperature will depend on the nature and the density of the leather used, but it will always be high enough to scorch and tighten a rib of the leather and consequently cause the opposite side to roll towards it by this contraction.

  The retightening tool is spaced somewhat from the share, the underside of its active face inclining relative to the plane of the table, as shown in fig. 1, and being placed at a small distance from the adjacent face, turned upwards, of the share 23 (fig. 9). As the leather passes under the tool and is lifted against it by the ploughshare, its flesh side contracts, causing the grain side to curl up, after which the hammer 21 falls back in time on the edge thus bypassed.

   The interchangeable scorching-tightening tools illustrated in the drawing are each provided with a groove or recess where the straightened edge of the leather is introduced, the tool being located so close to the plow 23 that only a small portion of the leather can sometimes pass between them and nothing

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 at the rear of the tool, where the latter is the farthest from the share. The retightening tool illustrated in fig. 2 is the same as that of FIG. 1, except that it has been turned end to end to reveal the groove 31 formed in its underside. Indeed, the front, that is to say the part facing the side towards which the work is drawn into the machine, is here on the left and the back on the right, while in fig. 1 the front is on the right and the back is on the left.

   The groove 31 starts from the front end of the tool and extends diagonally in the underside to the rear end, the front of said groove being spaced apart. a little on the side * of the tool shown in fig. 2, this side being near the coulter when the tool is in the machine, while the back of the groove is very close to the side of the tool adjoining the coulter. This groove decreases somewhat in width and depth from front to back to account for the tightening of the edge of the leather as this edge advances into the groove. When the front of the work, rising on the foot of the share 23, is pushed against the underside of the tool, the edge of the leather straightens up and enters the groove whose walls remain in contact with it during training.

   Fig. 3 shows what is supposed to happen to the marginal part of the leather when it reaches the point corresponding to the line of section III - III of fig. 2, and fig. 4 in turn shows the state of said marginal part when it reaches the section line IV - IV. It is understood that at this time the edge of the leather has been made somewhat plastic by the action of heat. Therefore, when it has finished passing over the ploughshare and is struck by the hammer, it will be crushed and bent approximately to the shape shown in fig. 8.

   While in some cases the edge of the leather stays fully lodged in the groove, things don't always work out that way. Indeed, it sometimes happens that a small portion of the edge of the leather rises between the end

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

   -the, @ @ rear of the tool and the coulter. However, a large amount of the leather can never behave this way, as the top wall of the groove engages most of the edge. The groove therefore prevents a good portion of the edge of the leather from rising between the rear end of the tool and the share, and consequently controls the amount of material which can thus pass between them. As a result, when the job is finished, the width of the fill effected by the hammer is virtually uniform.

   It has been found that, thanks to the improved system which has just been described, a very large number of parts can be finished as they are, that is to say without requiring any prior trimming. This desirable adaptability is made possible, it is believed, not only for the reasons stated above, but also because the tool, thanks to its groove, bears on a greater extent of leather than before, giving a russeting and a much more effective tightening.

  It is understood that although the main purpose of the groove is to allow the finishing of an untrimmed edge, the tool which is provided with it will perfectly work a leather which, because of its refractory nature or its extra thickness, requires be prepared beforehand.

   Fig. 5 shows another model of retightening tool. Here, the groove 33 follows a straight line and reigns all along the side of the active face of the tool adjoining the share 23. However, such a tool, which is heavy and whose groove is a little larger than that of the tool of fig. 2, 3 and 4, is especially suitable for working very thick leather. The edge of the book, as it appears in fig. 6, curled up in the groove under the contractile action of heat. Fig.

  7 shows the same edge after it has retreated and rounded further.

   The tool model shown in fig. 10 is particularly suitable for the treatment of relatively thin parts with strongly curved edges. However, with tools with a rather long active face like those of fig. 2 and 5 it is sometimes difficult to obtain excellent results, especially if the curves are convex, because when turning the work to follow the contour of the edge, the rear part of the tool protrudes over the edge. and tends to straighten the folded part by the front of the tool. Hence the use in such a case of a tool like that of fig. 10 to overcome this drawback.

   In its active face 35, which is relatively short, a groove 37 is formed which will make it possible to work easily work pieces with extremely curved edges.

   It is known that there are leathers, for example certain kinds of varnish, which give off a sticky and viscous substance when exposed to the heat of the tool. This substance settles on the underside of the tool and tends to accumulate on the posterior limb of the tool and spread onto surrounding parts of the machine.

  For the treatment of such work pieces, the invention provides for the use of the tool illustrated in FIG. 11. Its lower active portion 39 and its groove 41 are or may be the same as the corresponding lower portion of the tool of FIG. 2 or 5. The anterior rising branch 43 also resembles that of the other tools. As for the posterior branch 45, it is thus curved towards the anterior branch that the two branches form a narrow neck at 46, while the portion 47 is placed right against the portion 39. To pass an electric current throughout the tool, the portions 47 and 39, as well as the portions located at the location of the neck 46, have been separated from each other by an insulator 49.

   Since the active portion of the tool

 <Desc / Clms Page number 9>

 is supported entirely by the aforesaid narrow neck, which is at the front of the tool, the viscous substance which exudes from the leather adheres to it and is dragged with it into the machine.

   As in fig. 2, the tool of fig. 12 is turned end to end, that is to say that the end which is on the left in fig. 1 is here on the right.

   The tool of fig. 12 has a groove which runs from the front of the tool (its left end in this figure) and, running along part of the underside of the tool, bends and goes up across a portion of the in side of the tool (the one shown in the view in fig. 12) which is located near the share 23 when the tool is in place in the machine. Portion 51, which extends along the underside of the tool, is V-shaped in cross section (Fig. 13). The inner wall of this portion 51 terminates in a thin edge 53 which is approximately level with the plane of the inside side of the tool.

  As for the edge 55 of the outer wall, it extends diagonally from the front to the rear of the tool, so that the front of the portion 51 is wide but tapers towards its rear end. In addition, this portion, deep! the front, gradually decreases in depth towards its rear end.

  The front of the book can therefore be easily presented to the groove, which embraces the corner of the edge of the book (see fig.

  13). As the material advances through the machine, its flesh side contracts, possibly calcining somewhat, the groove having a decreasing dimension due to the shortening of the material which comes in contact with it. Thus, the marginal part of the leather became much smaller when it reached the elbow connecting the portion 51 of the groove to the portion 57 which goes up across the in side of the tool. The tapered edge of the work follows this bend and enters

 <Desc / Clms Page number 10>

 in portion 57 (fig. 14). At this point the "edge of the work is further circumvented around a small portion 59 of the tool, which forms part of the wall 57 of the groove.

   This small portion 59 fits into the hollow of the folded edge of the item and applies heat to contract the leather further there just before the item exits the groove.

   The degree of contouring of the edge of the work can be limited by its coming into contact with the portion 51 of the groove, and the entire groove, because of its bent portion, facilitates proper folding of the edge before the hammer strikes above. Preferably, this tool is so placed in the machine that its internal side is parallel to the rising face of the adjoining share, and as close as possible to said face.

   It is understood that the invention is not limited to the construction details described above.
