 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

     DESCRIPTIVE MEMORY H. 88336 DB. 21269 filed in support of an application for a FIRST IMPROVEMENT PATENT to main patent No. 337,220 filed on October 21, 1926, under the benefit of the International Convention of March 20, 1883, formed by:
SOCIETE DE PARIS ET DU RH # NE, Société Anonyme whose head office is in Lyon, 41 Chemin de St, Priest, for: "Improvement: in electric lighting machines and starting of motor cars." having been the subject of patent applications filed in France on
September 8, 1926 n 21.546 and 21.547 and September 27, 1926 n 21. 606.

   The present addition relates to improvements in starting and lighting of automobiles which use a single machine for this purpose. It has in view, in particular new means for increasing in a simple and safe manner, the starting torque of the third-brush dynamotor used.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

   The invention will be better understood by means of the following description and the accompanying drawings, where Figures 1, 2 and%, show various variants of an embodiment using a switch, Figures 4 and 5 variants of another. embodiment without a switch but by movement of the third brush, FIG. 6, an embodiment without a switch or movement of the third brush.

   According to a first embodiment of the invention, the diagram of FIG. 1 comprises a dynamotor 4 with an auxiliary excitation brush 5. Between the brushes 2 and 5 is connected, as usual, the inductor winding. shunt 6. When starting up, switches 1 and 3 are closed, which has the effect of putting the dynamotor under current, by short-circuiting the armature part located between brushes 7 and 5. In this way , the shunt winding is, at start-up, connected almost under the full voltage of the battery; only the resistance of the series winding, which is always very low, slightly decreases the voltage at its terminals.

   Once the start-up is complete and switches 1 and 3 open. the dynamotor operates as the following generator. the normal assembly, comprising a contactor-circuit breaker not shown in the figure.

   In this assembly, a part of the armature is short-circuited when starting; this does not have a great drawback owing to the fact that the turns concerned are not very active, their conductors being cut by a reduced flow. On the other hand, the armature resistance is reduced, which contributes to increasing the torque.

   It is evident that, remaining within the spirit of the invention, as indicated in the main patent, the switch 1 can be controlled manually or, preferably, automatically, by

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 for example by the ignition switch.

   The diagram of FIG. 2 shows a variant of the previous assembly, in which a resistor 8 has been inserted between the auxiliary brush and the shunt winding. The short-circuiting effect between the two brushes 7 and 5 is attenuated by resistor 8; this resistance may or may not be short-circuited during operation as a generator; however, it is preferable that it remains permanently uncircuited, because, in this case, a larger wire can be used for the shunt inductor, and that without fear of abnormal heating in the generator; flux is therefore increased at start-up, and in this case the resistance can be constituted by the auxiliary carbon itself which will be chosen sufficiently resistant.

   Finally, the diagram of FIG. 3 shows another possible variant of the invention, in accordance with the preceding indications, but where the bypass of the shunt winding is taken before the series winding.

   According to another embodiment (figure 4) the dynamo., Tor 4 is assumed to have 4 poles, and only two main brushes 2 and 6, the auxiliary brush is placed at 5 on the collector and the shunt winding 7 is connected normally between the brushes 5 and 2. The displacement of the auxiliary brush 5 on the collector can be effected by means of an external control easy to imagine and which can derive, for example, from the systems often used at present for the adjustment. of the generator flow of these dynamotors. On start-up, the auxiliary brush 5 is brought automatically or by individual command to position 5 ', which is that which the main brush would occupy at the same potential as the brush 6.

   The voltage at the ends of the shunt winding is thus significantly increased on start-up and is equal to that of the battery, close to the voltage drop in the 8-series inductors, which drop is generally minimal.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

   In the diagram of FIG. 4, the dynamotor has been represented with four poles by way of example, it is obvious that the same assembly applies to a dynamotor comprising any number of poles. Likewise, the number of main brushes can be, without inconvenience, equal to the number of poles; in this case, the brush 5 will be brought, on starting, as shown in FIG.

   5, that is to say at 5 'in contact with the brush 6, the induced part short-circuited by all of the brushes 5' and 6 being not very active, as has been said more high.

   FIG. 6 represents a new embodiment of the invention: 1 is the dynamotor shown for clarity with only two main brushes 2 and 3 and the auxiliary excitation brush 4,5 is the shunt inductor winding, 6 the starter series winding, 7 the accumulator battery,
8 the contactor or the starter pedal, 9 the contactor-circuit breaker.

   When the machine operates as a generator with the contactor-circuit breaker 9 closed, it can be seen that the flow is taken from the machine directly to brushes 2 and 3, the series winding is then connected in series with the shunt winding and is not crossed by the flow rate of the dynamotor.

   On start-up, the contactor-circuit breaker 9 being open, the battery current is brought to terminal 10 of the dynamotor, the series inductor bearing is crossed by the armature current and the shunt is located between terminal 10, directly joined to the battery, and the auxiliary brush 4 which is separated from the other pole of the battery only by a small part of the armature.
