<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

"Improvements made to the means for making surfaces understandable".
The invention relates to the means for making folds in surfaces understand; and it concerns more especially (because it is in their case that its application seems to offer the most interest), but not exclusively, among these means, those for obtaining folds of variable depth, that is to say -to say going deeper- .- regularly from each of their ends, where they end at zero, to their middle.
Its object is, above all, to make these means such that it is possible to obtain, without substantial stretching, in a surface, folds without appreciable reduction of the corresponding surface part.
It consists, principally, in constituting in such a way, the means of the kind in question, that the
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The thickness of the surface portion corresponding to the folds is maintained, as said folds deepen, substantially constant to the detriment of the thickness of the adjacent surface portions.
It consists, apart from this main provision, of certain other provisions which are preferably used at the same time and which will be discussed more explicitly below.
It relates more particularly to a certain mode of application (that in which it is applied to the lower surface and upper surface plates of the wings of aircraft), as well as certain embodiments (those which will be indicated below), of said provisions. ; and it relates more particularly still, and this title of new industrial products, to the means of the kind in question comprising the application of these same provisions, the elements and special tools specific to their establishment, as well as the surfaces worked using these means , and that installations, fixed or mobile (especially airplanes), comprising similar surfaces.
And it can, in any case, be well understood with the aid of the additional description which follows, as well as the appended drawing, which supplement and drawing are, of course, given above all by way of indication.
Fig. 1 of this drawing shows, in plan, a sheet prepared so that one can make folds of varying depth.
Fig. 2 shows, in section, this same ... gold / Slow sheet where these folds are practiced using means established in accordance with the invention, the section being made along the median longitudinal plane of one of these folds .
Fig. 3 shows, in the same way as in FIG. 2, another sheet in which we have obtained plies of a @@ nière other than the preceding.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
According to the invention, and more especially according to that of its modes of application, as well as those of the embodiments of its various parts, to which it seems that preference should be given, is pro. asking to make a sheet understand folds parallel to each other, protruding on the same face of this sheet and of varying depth, we do it as follows, or in a similar way.
We have recourse to means suitable for allowing a certain quantity of the metal of the part of the sheet included between two folds to be practiced, can be driven back on the side of these folds to keep them, as and when measuring. their deepening, a substantially constant wall thickness. For this purpose, these means can be constituted in different ways, depending on the quality of the metal of the sheet, for example as follows.
Or, as shown in FIG. 2, an assembly is formed in such a way that it can be made to oscillate, for example by making it actuate by means of a rod a, around an axis b carried by a part c connected to the fixed support of said assembly, that part c can be lowered and raised relative to its support d, in a plane perpendicular to the axis b, which can be achieved for example, and undergo assuming that, as will be seen, said assembly undergoes, in this plane, a certain resistance, by terminating the upper part of said part ± with a screw engaged in an ad hoc thread made in a kind of ring 1 capable of being driven in rotation in said support, without longitudinal displacement,
this for example by the intermediary of a kind of handwheel ± fixed to said ring, that we can vary the distance between the axis of oscillation b and the lower end of said
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
together, for example by making independent, de'la part c, the body h of this assembly, and by using a screw i in ad hoc threads made in said body and said part and whose threads are such that, by rotating said screw in one direction or the other, for example by means of a sort of flywheel fixed on it, the desired result is obtained, and said assembly is completed, at its lower part, by a wheel k mounted on an axis 1 parallel to the axis of oscillation b of said assembly,
which wheel comprises circular faults corresponding to the folds m to be obtained, and the parts included between these projections

being cylindrical / - 4 coaxial4T (ett - & -.
The whole being thus constituted, recourse is had to a (not shown) such that the

:; olct; e when the axis of oscillation b is in its extreme high position as shown in fig. 2, in which are threatened channels corresponding respectively to the projections of the wheel and to the shape and dimensions that must have m folds to practice.
To operate, once we have applied the sheet n on the curved face of the form, and we have brought the part ± in its extreme high position and the body h in the position for which the wheel can roll. on the sheet, said wheel is oscillated around the axis b, 'CI- starting from the middle of the form, progressively increasing the amplitude of the oscillations, at the same time that the part is lowered ± and the part h of appropriate relative quantities. The. The wheel then determines crescent-shaped folds in the sheet, the length and depth of which gradually increase until they are those of the final folds m to be obtained.
At a certain moment, the cylindrical part of the wheel between its protrusions
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
exerts on the corresponding part of the sheet an increasing pressure which has the result of pushing back the metal on the side of the folds, which then keep substantially the same thickness in the furtet as they deepen, without appreciable stretching of the sheet metal.
Or, while using the oscillating assembly
EMI5.1
above, we arrange the wheel, as well as IGL ïvwn in such a way that this one determines, in the sheet, a series of small folds o such as those indicated in fig. 1, parallel to the folds m, of variable depth, but of length appreciably less than that of said folds m, and decreasing from each of the latter to the middle of the interval between one fold m and the next; so that said small folds o, when the oscillating assembly is operated as above, contribute to pushing back the material into the folds m, as it has. summer: 'said.
Or, while still using the same oscillating assembly, the sheet is subjected to a preliminary operation by which the small folds o which have just been mentioned are obtained, and the said still oscillating assembly is actuated. in the same way.
Or, as shown in FIG. 3, the sheet is in reality constituted by three successive sheets p, q and r, juxtaposed ,. and made integral together after having made understand, by any suitable means, the intermediate sheet q the middle part of the ply m (part generally of constant depth, but which may be of variable depth) and the two end sheets p and r, by any equally suitable means, for example in the same way as one obtains an embossing of lampshades, folds suitable for joining, by one of their ends, with the folds of said intermediate sheet - re and ending at zero at their other ends, all so as to obtain, as above, a repression of
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
material in the folds to be formed.
Whatever the procedure adopted depending on the nature of the metal of the sheets to be used, these sheets in which the folds formed there provide effective stiffening, can have many applications, in particular entering into the constitution of the coating of aircraft wings. , as to what is at least a part of the ex- trados and the intrados, in which case the folds are directed in the direction of travel of the aircraft and, by their shape, oppose the advancing the minimum resistance, at the same time they have the advantage of substantially equal body resistance to bending.
As goes without saying, and as is already apparent from the foregoing, the invention is in no way limited to that of its modes of application, nor to those of the embodiments of the invention. its various parts, @ having been specially indicated; it embraces, on the contrary, all the variants thereof, in particular: those in which the oscillating assembly described would be replaced by a device suitable for making it possible to obtain the same result; and those where the desired result would be obtained in ways other than those indicated.
ABSTRACT.
The subject of the invention is improvements made to the means for making surfaces understand folds, which improvements consist, mainly, in constituting the means of the kind in question in such a way that the thickness of the part of surface corresponding to the folds is kept, as said folds deepen, substantially constant to the detriment of the thickness of the adjacent surface parts.
