Description

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

   Exemple I.

  Exemple II.

     @ Un récipient en tôle d'acier a été rempli, après avoir été pesé, d'acide sulfurique à 40 % contenant une partie de di-xylyl-thio-urée Pour 6000 parties d'acide

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

  Improvements to a process for preventing the dissolution of iron and steel in sulfuric acid.

   The invention is directed to a method of substantially completely preventing the dissolution of iron and steel in sulfuric acid, and it lends itself particularly well to preventing excessive dissolution of iron and steel in sulfuric acid. pickling baths or to prevent corrosion of iron and steel vessels, such as tank cars used to store or transport sulfuric acid
In pickling, sheets or wires of iron and steel, as well as other products derived from iron and steel, which are covered with a layer of iron oxide during manufacture, are subjected to extensive sulfuric acid treatment to remove this layer. 11 it is necessary to completely remove the oxide layer before the finishing operation, such as galvanizing, can be carried out,

   painting, etc.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

   The action of sulfuric acid in the pickling bath is to dissolve the crust of the metal, but, unless the treated article is removed from the pickling bath just when the crust is completely dissolved, continuous dissolving action on the metal itself, the surface of which is thus eroded and roughened.

   This secondary action significantly decreases the value of the finished product.

   Transportation of sulfuric acid in iron and steel tank cars is not entirely satisfactory, because sulfuric acid in large quantities or in moderate concentration very easily attacks iron and steel. The degree of sulfuric acid concentration which can be transported economically in iron and steel tank wagons therefore does not exceed the highest acid concentrations.

   This is why one of the objects of the present invention is to provide means considerably delaying the action of sulfuric acid of relatively low concentration on iron and steel products.

   Another object of the invention consists in providing means making it possible to prevent, in a substantially complete manner, the dissolution of the iron and steel products in the pickling baths, when the oxide layer covering these products has been removed.

   Another important object of the invention is to provide means for preventing corrosion of tank cars and other iron and steel receptacles used to store and transport sulfuric acid of extended or moderate concentration.

   Other objects of the present invention will emerge from the description which follows.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

   The inventors have discovered that thiourea, and in particular its substitutes, have the property of preventing or minimizing the dissolving action of sulfuric acid or acid sulfates in solution on iron and steel. . Thiourea itself exhibits this property only to a limited degree, but the inventors have found that its substitutes are much more effective. These substitution products can include all compounds having the following general structure
 EMI3.1
 N-R in which R represents a C = S hydrogen atom, an alphyl or aryl radical.

  RN any of the hydrogen atoms of the amino groups of thiourea, or all of these atoms can be replaced by a radi'cal of the aliphatic series or of the aromatic series, such as methyl, ethyl, benzyl, phenyl, etc. These thiourea substitutes have the effect of minimizing the dissolving action of sulfuric acid of any concentration from the lowest to about 90 H 2 SO 4, as well as solutions of acidic sulfates. It is for the relatively low concentrations that the protective action of the thiourea compounds is most remarkable.

   When a steel sheet, steel wire or other steel products are pickled in a sulfuric acid bath, before galvanizing, painting or other

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 In finishing operations, the use of thioureas to prevent dissolution of the metal has an advantage which is demonstrated by the following examples.

   Example I.

   A steel sheet about 10 cm by 2.5 cm and 3 mm thick was immersed, after being weighed, in a pickling bath composed of 600 grams of 15% sulfuric acid and 100 milligrams of ditolylthiourea. This bath was heated for 15 minutes at
80 C, then the plate was removed, washed until the acid completely disappeared, weighed and dried. The loss of metal was 203.5 milligrams for an area of 6.45 cm 2 per 24 hours, and the metal surface remained clean and shiny. a sheet of metal of the same size and weight, treated in a similar manner in a bath not containing thiourea, lost in weight 31.858 grams for the same area, per 24 hours, and its surface was rough and scratched .

  The loss of iron, in this case, was 156.6 times faster, when no protective material was used.

  Similarly, when it is desired to remove zinc from galvanized iron, a small amount of thiourea, or its derivatives, added to the bath will allow the zinc to be removed without appreciably attacking the iron.

   When it is desired to ship or store sulfuric acid in concentrations ranging from the lowest up to 90% sulfuric acid, it has been found that a small addition of the thioureas mentioned above minimizes the action. sulfuric acid on the steel and significantly prolongs the life of the vessel.

  Example II.

     @ A sheet steel container was filled, after being weighed, with 40% sulfuric acid containing one part of di-xylyl-thiourea For 6000 parts of acid

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 sulfuric acid of the above concentration. After allowing to stand for seven days at room temperature, the container was emptied, washed until the acid completely disappeared, then dried and reweighed. The iron loss was found to be 3.98 milligrams per 6.45 cm2 area unit per day.

   A container of the same weight and volume, filled with 40% sulfuric acid not containing thiourea, exhibited, after being allowed to stand for the same time, a loss of weight of 427 milligrams for the same unit area per day. In this case, the iron loss was 107 times greater than with the addition of thiourea. In other words, the life of a 3 mm thick sheet metal container filled with 40% sulfuric acid would be 11.5 days without the addition of the protective material according to the invention, while the life of the same container, when one part of protective material is added to 6000 parts of acid, would be 3 years and 4 months.

  Example III.

   A piece of sheet steel was placed, after being weighed, in a pickling bath composed of 500 cm3 of 12.5% sodium bisulfate, by weight, and 100 milligrams of ditolyl thiourea. The bath was heated for 1 hour at 80 C, then the plate was removed, washed until the acid completely disappeared and dried.

  The loss in weight was 2.16 milligrams per unit area of 6.418 cm2 and per hour, a counter-experiment carried out without the addition of thiourea showed a loss of 327 milligrams for the same unit of area and per hour. hour. In other words, the loss was 151.5 times

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 larger, when no protective material was added.

   It is obvious that one can make numerous modifications of detail to the process without departing from the scope of the invention and that consequently the indications given are only indicative and not limiting.
