 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 10>

   vérisateur   17a et le gazet les vapeurs d'huile passent par le surchauffeur 4a où les vapeurs sont décomposées et stabilisées et le gaz mixte chauffé davantage;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 11>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 12>

  Improvements in the production of mixed gas.

   This invention relates to the complete gasification of fuels with volatile constituents, such as fatty coal, with complete recovery of the volatiles and -production of a gas of relatively high calorific value and free of inert gas compared with the results obtained. required by the currently known processes for the manufacture of water gas using bituminous fuels.

   Existing gasifiers can be easily modified. to operate according to this invention and present its capabilities
 EMI1.1
 characteristics.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

   One embodiment of the invention is described below with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a vertical section of an installation suitable for carrying out the invention, the section being taken by line 1-1 of FIG. 2.

   Fig. 2 is a plan of the apparatus shown in FIG. 1.

   Fgis. 3 and 4 are cross sections showing modifications to the installation. in the drawings 1 and 2 are gasifiers, 3 and 4 are superheaters, 5 and 6 are combined regenerative carburetors.

   The gasifiers 1 and 2 are provided with wind pipes 8 opening below the fuel layer and with steam pipes 10 for the upward and downward circulation through the gasification zone 11. The gasifiers 1 and 2 are provided, at the upper part of the gasification zones, gas outlets 13 and 14 communicating with superheaters 3 and 4. These outlets 13 and 14 lead the blowing gases from the gasifier to the superheater and are fitted with secondary air inlets 9.

   The gas outlet 15, provided with the valve 16, connects the base of the gasifier 2 to the combined regenerator-carburetor 5. The gas outlet 17 provided with the valve 17 'connects the base of the gasifier 1 to the combined regenerator-carburettor 6 .

   These gas outlets conduct downward blue gas.

   The gas outlets 18 and 20 connect the upper part of the carbonization zones of gasifiers 1 and 2 to the scrubber 7.

   They are provided with valves 19 and 21 respectively and conduct mixed gas from the two gasifiers. The socket 22 of the scrubber leads to the condenser and to the gasometer (not shown).

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

   The superheaters 3 and 4 are lined with stacked bricks 23 and are in free communication through the pipes 13 and 14 with the gasifiers 1 and 2 respectively, and through the pipes 27 and 28 with the combined regenerator-carburetors 5 and 6 respectively.

   The combined carburetor regenerators 5 and 6 are divided into a regeneration chamber 25 and a carburizing chamber 24 which is provided with an oil sprayer 26.

  The regeneration chamber can be filled with any suitable material such as slag, broken bricks or stacked bricks. The carburizing chamber may be empty as shown or filled with empi-
 EMI3.1
 ed as usual.

   The regeneration chamber 5 communicates by a valve with the base of the gasifier 2, and freely with the carburizing chamber of the receptacle 5. The latter communicates freely with the superheater 3.

   The regeneration chamber of the receptacle 6 communicates via a valve with the base of the gasifier 1 and freely with the carburizing chamber of the receptacle 6 which communicates freely with the superheater 4.

   The regeneration chambers of the containers 5 and 6 are provided with valves 29.

   The combined carburetor regenerators 5 and 6 could each be divided into two separate receptacles containing their regeneration and carburetion chambers separately, but keeping the same communication system.

   The realization of the invention by means of the apparatus described can be explained as follows:
The two gasifiers are blown simultaneously and in parallel. The wind crosses the gasified areas.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 cation 11 but not the carbonization zones 12. The blowing gases coming from the gasifier 1 pass through line 13 to the superheater 3, where they enter into combustion with the secondary air introduced at 9, thus heating the stacked bricks or the like. material contained in the superheater 3.

   The blowing gases then pass through line 27 into the carburettor regenerator 6, where their combustion is completed by the tertiary air introduced at 30, thus heating the carburizing chamber 24 and the regeneration chamber 25, and exit. a- then the apparatus through the flue valve 29, at a relatively low temperature as a result of their passage through the regenerator 25.

   The blowing gases from the gasifier 2 follow a parallel path through 14, 4, 28 and 6.

   After the blowing operation, steam is circulated from top to bottom in one of the gasifiers and from bottom to top in the other. If the downward operation takes place in gasifier 1 while the upward movement is in gasifier 2, the operation takes place as follows:
Valves 8, 9, 29, 31 and 16 are closed, valves 17 'and 21 are open, valve 19 is partially open.

   In gasifier 2 the hot blue gas of the upward step passes from the gasification zone through the partially carbonized fuel and the fresh fuel of the carbonization zone, the sensible heat of the gas being used for carbonization and to heat the fresh fuel, the gas being cooled accordingly.

   In gasifier 1 vapor is passed from top to bottom through the gasification zone and then through the ash to the lower part of the fuel layer.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

  The blue gas from the downstairs comes out of the relatively cooled ash and passes through line 17 into the regeneration chamber of the vessel 6, where it is heated by the accumulated heat of the blowing gases, this blue gas from the step descending thus heated, passes through the carburetion chamber of the receptacle 6 where oil is admitted by a sprayer as at 26, and the gas is carburized. The gas and the oil vapors then pass through line 28 to the superheater 4 where the oil vapors are decomposed and stabilized and the fuel gas is further heated.

   From superheater 4, this hot gas passes through line 14 into gasifier 2 where it mixes with the ascending hot blue gas, coming from the gasification zone of this gasifier and passes with it through the carbonization zone, helping the gas rising blue of gasifier 2 to carbonize and heat the fuel. The resulting mixed gas consisting of rising blue gas from gasifier 2, downward carbureted water gas from gasifier 1, and coal gas from the carbonization zone of gasifier 2, leaves the upper part of the latter at a temperature relatively low, having lost its heat by charring and heating the fresh fuel, and passes through line 20 to the scrubber and thence to the gasometer through the necessary condensing apparatus.

   At the same time, the coal gas resulting from the distillation in the carbonization zone of the gasifier 1, passes to the scrubber through the partially open valve 19.

   The circulation of the water vapor in the two gasifiers is then reversed, the valve 17 'is closed, the valves 16 and 17 are opened and the valve 21 is partially closed, and the upward step is produced in the gasifier 1 and the downward step in gasifier 2. The ascending blue gas from gasifier 1 passes through the carbonization zone of this gasifier with

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 the gas coming down from the gasifier 2 which has been heated, carbide and superheated during its passage in the pipe 15 through the carburetor 5 and the superheater 3.

   The blowing of the gasifiers is then started again in parallel and the operation is repeated.

   According to a variant, we can proceed as follows:
The two gasifiers are subjected to blowing in parallel as above and at the same time one proceeds to the upward step in one of the gasifiers and to the downward step in the other, as above, except that, if for example the downward operation takes place in the gasifier 1, water vapor is admitted to the regenerator in the receptacle 5, for example at 32, and this vapor being superheated in passing by the regenerator 5 and the superheater 3, then passes through the gasification zone of the gasifier 1 and is used to make down gas, the resulting water gas being heated,

   fueled and superheated in regenerator-carburettor 6 and superheater 4 retort above and passing through the carbonization zone of gasifier 2 as above with rising blue gas from the gasifier. 2.

   In this case, the heat stored in devices 3 and
5 having been recovered by the steam at the same time as that of the devices 4 and 6 has been recovered by the gas descending from the gasifier 1, it is then necessary to restart the blowing in parallel to heat these devices 3 and 5 and 4 and 6.

   After this blowing operation, the direction of circulation in the gas generators is reversed and water vapor is admitted into the regenerator of the receptacle 6, reheated at 6 and 4, and used for a downward operation in the gasifier 2, the resulting gas is then heated, causing

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

 bure and superheated in the devices 5 and 3, and mixed with the rising blue gas of the gasifier 1, passes with the latter through the carbonization zone of this gasifier as described above.

  The blowing operation then follows and the cycle continues.

   It will be noted that in each of these modes of operation, the blowing gases do not pass through the carbonization zone of the gasifiers, which would result in the consequent loss of the volatile constituents of the fuel. The fuel, in each case, is subjected to the carbonizing action of the whole of the gas to water produced during the upward march in one of the gasifiers and the downward march in the other, and may also be to the action of a gas brought from outside and heated as cedrit. The sensible heat of the ascending blue gas and descending carbide gas is recovered by using it to carbonize and heat the fresh fuel.

   The large quantity of hot gas available for carbonization ensures the carbonization of the fuel before it arrives at the gasification zone where it is subjected to blowing, and ensures the recovery of the volatile constituents of the fuel.

  A blowing operation and the consequent dilution by inert gases are therefore avoided. The sensible heat of the blast gases can be recovered without the use of a waste heat recovery boiler, the blast gases leaving the apparatus relatively cold. The valves should only allow gases to pass at a relatively low temperature, the blue gas from the downstairs which passes through valves 16 and 17 'is cooled by the ash to about 150 to 250 C. The mixed gases passing through by the valves 19 and 21 have been cooled previously by their passage through the fresh fuel, so that expensive valves

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

 for hot fluids are not required.

   A large amount of hot gas is made available for carbonization without passing back through the hot gasification zone. The hydrocarbons contained in the fuel gas are not subjected to a higher temperature than necessary to stabilize them, and the hydrocarbons in the fresh coal are not heated above the temperature at which they are. distances in the carbonization zone, which ensures the production in this zone of a gas of high calorific value and thus decreases the quantity of oil necessary for the fuel.

   The second mode of operation provides, if desired, a source of superheated water vapor for downward travel.

   The modified construction and method described below with reference to FIG. µ are similar to those described above except the following:
There is only one gasifier, one superheater and one regenerative carburetor combined instead of two devices of each kind as described above.

   The gasifier 1a. Divides into superimposed carbonization and gasification zones 3a and 2a communicates freely at the location of the junction of the zones, with the superheater 4a which is filled with material capable of absorbing heat, such as stacked bricks or bricks. an equivalent subject. The upper part of the carbonization zone connected by line 14a and reversible valve 15a with the scrubber 8a. The base of the gasifier is connected to the scrubber by the pipe 13a and the reversible valve 15a. The gasifier receives air through the line loa and water vapor for the upward and downward circulation through the pipe 9a.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 9>

   The base of the superheater communicates freely with the combined carburetor-regenerator 51 and is supplied with secondary air through the port 12a.

   The combined regenerative carburetor 5! comprises a carburizing chamber 6a, which can be empty as shown or filled with stacked bricks, and a regeneration chamber 7a which is filled with materials suitable for absorbing heat, such as stacked bricks , slag, crushed bricks, etc. The carburizing chamber is provided with an oil distributor, such as the sprayer 17a and can receive tertiary air through the orifice 11a. The regeneration chamber is connected to the gasometer by the valve pipe 20a and is provided with a chimney valve 18a. The regenerator may be provided with a sprayer 28a connected to steam and water lines 291 and 30a respectively.

   In service, the gasifier receives wind from the blower through 10a. The resulting blast gas does not pass through the carbonization zone but passes into the superheater 4a through the unvalved line, and burns there with the secondary air arriving through the. 'orifice 12a. The products of this combustion then pass through the regenerative carburetor combined with the chimney, tertiary air being admitted if necessary through the orifice 11a.

   The blowing is then stopped, the valves are arranged for upward circulation, and steam is admitted to the base of the gasifier, the resulting hot blue gas leaving the gasification zone through the carbonization zone. At the same time gas is withdrawn from the gasometer through line 20a.

  It passes through regenerator 71 and is heated there to the temperature necessary for carburization. It is carburized in chamber 6a by means of the oil introduced by the pul-

 <Desc / Clms Page number 10>

   actuator 17a and the gas and the oil vapors pass through the superheater 4a where the vapors are decomposed and stabilized and the mixed gas further heated;

   from there the gas passes to the gasifier and rises through the carbonization zone with the blue gas of the ascending step, subjecting the fuel to the action of sensible heat of a large quantity of hot gas other than the blowing gas, carbonizes this fuel and carries away its volatile constituents through line 14a and reversible valve 15a to scrubber 8a and thence to gasometer.

   If the quantity of gas withdrawn from the gasometer to operate the complete carbonization of the fuel together with the blue gas of the upward step is not sufficient to absorb the heat stored in the receptacles 5a and 4a by the blowing gases, this heat may be completely recovered by introducing steam through distributor 28a which, after being superheated at 7a, 6a and 4a, enters the gasifier at the upper part of the gasification zone, and is used for the downward movement, Another The alternative consists in producing steam for the downward movement by spraying water through the distributor 28a.

   This modified process exhibits many of the advantages of the process described with reference to Figs. 1 and 2. The fuel is carbonized before being subjected to the action of the blowing gases. Large quantities of hot gas for carbonization are produced without having to pass it back through the blown zone. The heat from the blowing gases is recovered without using a waste heat recovery boiler. The heat of the gas to the water produced is recovered

 <Desc / Clms Page number 11>

 by using it for carbonization and heating of fresh fuel. Superheated steam or steam can be produced for the downstroke and the gases passing through the valves are relatively cold.

   In the process described above, the gas employed to aid the blue gas of the upstage to carbonize the fresh fuel is withdrawn from the ordinary gasometer and consists of a mixture of blue gas, carburized water gas and coal gas.

   If it is not desired to subject the coal gas and the carburized water gas to the possible reheating and decomposition, a variant of the process which will be described with reference to FIG. 3. in this figure, the components are similar to those already described, except the following changes: The pipe 21a with valve 22a replaces the pipe 13a and connects the base of the gas gauge to a second scrubber 23a which communicates with the small gasometer 25a . The outlet of the gasometer is provided with the pump 271 which is connected to the upper part of the regenerator 7a instead of the line 20a of the ordinary gasometer. The reversible valve 151 is replaced by an ordinary valve 24a.

   In operation, blue gas from the downward gear passes to the gasometer 25a from where it can be withdrawn during the upward movement, then it passes through the regenerator 7a where it is heated, carburized in the carburetor 6a, stabilized and heated further in the superheater 4a and passes with the blue gas of the ascending step through the carbonization zone, the mixed gases then going to the ordinary gasometer. if the blue gas from the downstairs is not sufficient to recover the heat accumulated in the vessels 5a

 <Desc / Clms Page number 12>

 and 4a, instead of supplementing the recovery by superheating or producing steam for the downstroke, line 31a can be used to withdraw additional gas from the gasometer.

   In Fig. 2 such conduct is shown in
31b.

   The mixed gas intake 14a can be extended below the top surface of the fuel layer and not be obstructed by the fuel, and when this is done the gas can be picked up at a point on the top of the fuel layer. fuel at an appropriate temperature.

   It is evident that modifications can be made in the details of the construction and the process and in the details without deviating from the principle of the invention.

  The arrangement in a gasifier of superimposed chambers for coking and combustion and the capture of gas from the ascending step at mid-height of the gasifier has already been proposed, as has the recirculation of an enriched gas through the entire fly of the gasifier. fuel (including coking and combustion layers).
