It Improvements made to the means for closing one of the tapered ends of the ampoules with serum ".
The invention relates to improvements made in the main patent of October 19, 1927 filed under provisional number 273.289 and relating to
moyeha to close one of. tapered ends of serum ampoules.
Its purpose, above all, is to make these means
such, that they allow, on the one hand, to close, more quickly than before, the tapered ends of a large
number of bulbs, and always at equal distances
of the body of said bulbs and, on the other hand, to obtain
using mechanical means, flat-bottomed bulbs starting from bulbs. with tapered ends.
It consists, mainly, in constituting the means of the kind in question, on the one hand, by mounting the
<EMI ID = 1.1>
one direction, the ends to be closed of the bulbs pass successively, at the same height, in front of a hearth (for example a gas torch) gradually bringing the said ends to merge until they are closed and, on the other hand, using a clean device
in eliminating the parts of the ends which must be detached, this elimination taking place, in the event that the ex-

hearth and, in the event that the closed end / constitute a.
flat bottom, before passing in front of said hearth.
It consists, apart from this main provision, of. certain other arrangements, which are preferably used at the same time and which will be discussed more explicitly below, in particular in another arrangement consisting in combining with the means suitable for closing one end of the bulbs, other means suitable for detaching on the other end the tapered part.
It relates more particularly to certain embodiments of said arrangements; and it relates more particularly still, and this as new industrial products, the means of the kind in question comprising application of these same provisions, the elements, tools and special machines specific to their establishment, the ampoules with serum of which one of the ends (tapered or flat bottom) is closed using said means, as well as installations using similar means.
And it can, in any case, be well understood with the aid of the additional description which follows, as well as the accompanying drawings c i., Which supplement and drawing are, of course, given above all by way of indication.
Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings show, respectively in elevation and in schematic and partial plan, parts removed, a machine suitable for enabling one of the tapered ends of the serum ampoules to be closed and established in accordance with the invention.
Figs. 3 to 6 show, in elevation, a serum ampoule in four phases of its closing operation.
Fig. 7 shows in partial elevation a serum ampoule after this operation.
Finally, figs. 8 and 9 show similarly to

According to the invention, and more especially according to those of the modes; realization of its various parts to which it

In: the case where it is desired that the closed end of the bulb is tapered, it is possible to have recourse to a machine established as shown in fig. 1 to 7 and which essentially comprises:
a circular plate a ,, preferably horizontal and provided axially with an axis b pivoted in the frame of said machine, which plate can be set in continuous rotation, in one direction, in any suitable manner, for example mechanically;
as known for other applications, a number of kinds of externally cylindrical buckets
<EMI ID = 6.1>
and uniformly distributed over a circumference having as its center the middle of said plate, which cups are arranged to allow each bulb d to be axially untranslated therein, to be supported there by its lower bulging part and to be immobilized leaving it protrude, below said plate, the tapered end to be closed, and, above said cups, the other tapered end of said bulb, to be cut if desired, a number of go-

and a device established on the passage of the molten end at dl, and suitable for allowing, on the one hand, that this end is formed when it meets this dispo-

<EMI ID = 13.1>
larger than that of the tapered ends of the bulbs, respectively a little in front of the cups in the direction. of the
<EMI ID = 14.1> \ les: branches of an elastic clamp h carried by the frame, of <EMI ID = 15.1> responding can enter it freely (fig. 4) and be retained by said clamp when the cleat, driven by the meal-

pledge between the branches of these (fig. 6).
We arranged for the clamp h to be placed, in front of the torch, at a place such as the tapered part. of the ampoule could have been sufficiently softened before coming into contact with said clamp and so that, at this moment, this softened part is broken by stretching by
<EMI ID = 18.1>
between the branches of the clamp, the other tapered part of the body of the bulb continuing its path above it, thus causing a stretch that the flame breaks and which comes to agglomerate with the tapered part of the bulb and form a pearl (fig. 7) during the stroke it still has to make in front of the torch, the whole conditioned in such a way that, when the bulb ceases to be in contact with the torch, the tapered part of the bulb is well closed, and this by a bead and always at the same length. During this operation, the bulb, immobilized in a rotating cup, did not stop rotating around
<EMI ID = 19.1>
<EMI ID = 20.1>
the. hand.
We can propose, if the bulbs must be closed at one of their ends and also cut at their other ends, to proceed with this cut on the same machine, this by establishing, before the first bucket
<EMI ID = 21.1>
horizontal: The on board. cutting .. rotated; in the frame of said machine, driven for example by the plate a and coming to meet by its edge successively the ends of the bulbs to be cut, ends coming in turn to meet a set of fixed springs k which make them press against said edge , without fear of breaking the glass, if we have
<EMI ID = 22.1>
automatically radially when each bulb is in front of the knife, and in which the said bulb can play slightly, all so that the knife only cuts the glass, the section, thus initiated, being completed either by hand or by a metal finger, when the operation of closing the other bulb ends is carried out, which knife can however be established after the last rotating cup.
In the event that it is desired that the closed end of the bulb constitutes a flat bottom for the latter, it is possible to have recourse to a machine established as shown in FIGS. 8 and 9 and which essentially comprises:
a circular plate formed in a manner analogous to that mounted in FIGS. 1 and 2 and on which are placed cups [pound] in cylindrical housings;
<EMI ID = 23.1>
the upper face of the plate, a certain number of consecutive buckets being driven in rotation, in the same direction around their axes, for example as indicated above, by means of a loose rope [pound] suitably arranged and fixed, by its ends, to the machine frame .;
<EMI ID = 24.1>
teau being also completed by a set of fixed springs k suitable for maintaining the body of the bulb when it comes to the knife, the latter being established at such a level,
<EMI ID = 25.1>
arranged so as to be able to heat the upper part of the bulbs after its tapered end has been severed and pulled apart and the cups in which these bulbs are engaged rotate, which torch is fixed to the frame
to such a level that the end of each bulb is gradually and evenly heated over everything. its outline ..
The inclined parts of this end by melting bend more towards the axis of the bulb under the effect of the jet of hot gas coming out of the torch and under
<EMI ID = 26.1>
the edge of this end come into contact and weld together, thus forming a flat bottom for the bulb. The torch has such a length and the intensity of the heating itself is such that when the bulb exceeded the last burner, the end is absolutely closed and without resulting in any deformation of the body of the bulb.,
If necessary we could combine with the machine thus established a second knife, established below the rotating plate , and able to cut the other tapered end of the bulb in the "direction indicated in the subject of fig. 1 and 2.
As a result, we obtain a machine which
<EMI ID = 27.1>
or cut them at the other end, or proceed at the same time
to both operations. For all bulbs, the closure
is carried out at an equal distance from the bulging part
corresponding bulb body, distance dependent
of the respective height differences. between the cups. [pound]
-and the torch on the one hand (tapered ends) or the neck- <EMI ID = 28.1>

body of the bulb and which depends on the difference in height between said cups and the knife, each of these
distances which can, consequently and according to needs,

in no way to those of the methods of carrying out its various
parts which have been more specifically indicated; on the contrary, it embraces all the variants.
