  SYSTEME DE C01,II\IlUNICATIOlif PAR COURANT PORTEUR.

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Fig.l est un schéma d'un circuit de transmetteur avec modulation distincte des deux moitiés de l'onde porteuse;
Fig. 2 est un schéma des amplitudes de courant dans le système d'antenne lorsqu'on emploie une modula- tion double, c'est-à-dire quand on module les deux moitiés de l' oade porteuse;
Fig. 3 est un schéma similaire lorsqu'on ne module qu'une des moitiés de l'onde porteuse;
Fig.4 est un schéma d'un circuit de détecteur avec connexions pour la détection de la modulation de l'une ou de l'autre des moitiés de l'onde porteuse, à volonté ;

  C01 SYSTEM, II UNICATIOlif BY CARRIER CURRENT.

   The present invention is concerned with systems in which a carrier wave is generated at a station and modulated by a signal. of any kind imprinted on the carrier wave and it aims, in particular, at an improved method and means for imprinting signals on a carrier wave and for the detection of these signals.

   Its general object is to provide a method and a means for modulating the positive or negative component of a carrier wave independently of the modulation of the other component.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

   The invention relates more particularly to a method and an apparatus for modulating the carrier wave, in communication systems, so that one or the other or both components of this wave can be. used in the transmission and reception of dissimilar signals.

   It relates, specifically, to a method and apparatus suitable for use in the art of carrier wave communication and characterized in that the negative or positive component of a carrier wave generated at a station is modulated independently of the other component, so that messages can be imprinted on one or the other of the components or on both simultaneously o
Another object of the invention is to provide a system and an apparatus for the reception and detection of the modulations imprinted on the negative and positive components of a carrier wave and aimed, specifically, at the detection of messages. dissimilar or different which have been imprinted on this carrier wave.

   In principle, the invention is based on the generation of a true alternating current in which the current flows in one direction during one of the half-periods and in the opposite direction during the other half-period. In the transmitting system, a modulator can be arranged so as to act on that half of the current flowing in one direction, but to be inoperative with respect to the other half and, if desired, two modulators can be applied to act independently. one of the other on their respective half-periods of alternating current. The system can be used either with a single antenna or, if desired, with two antennas: one for each half.

 period.

   In what follows, the invention will be explained with reference to an embodiment in which a single antenna is employed for the entire carrier wave.

   On the attached de; sane which represents, by way of example, the invention:
Fig.l is a diagram of a transmitter circuit with separate modulation of the two halves of the carrier wave;
Fig. 2 is a diagram of the current amplitudes in the antenna system when double modulation is employed, ie when the two halves of the carrier wave are modulated;
Fig. 3 is a similar diagram when only one of the halves of the carrier wave is modulated;
Fig.4 is a diagram of a detector circuit with connections for detecting the modulation of either half of the carrier wave at will;
Fig. 5 is a similar diagram of a detector system employing two detectors acting simultaneously on both halves of the carrier wave.

   10 schematically represents an oscillator or an alternating current generator, of carrier frequency, one side of which is connected to earth at 11 and the other side of which is connected to the antenna 12 by means of rectifiers or rectifiers in parallel, as will be explained. The two rectifiers may advantageously take the form of vacuum tubes or three-electrode valves 13, 14, the conductor 15 from the antenna side of the oscillation generator being connected, for example to the filament 16 of the tube 13 and to the cable. plate 17 of the tube 14. The antenna 12 can be connected, for example, to the

 by means of a tuning or tuning choke, such as that represented by the variometer 18, with the plate 19 of the tube 13 and the filament 30 of the tube 14.

   The filaments 16 and 20 are heated by batteries 21 and 22. With the connections described so far, it is evident that a current of electrons going from 1 oscillator 10 to the antenna 12 will be carried from the filament 16 to the plate 19 of the tube.

The valves 13 and 14 constituting almost complete rectifiers, the two half-periods of the current emanating from the oscillator 10 will only reside in their respective tubes 13 and 14 and can therefore be modulated separately or independently by applying to these tubes any of the proven modulator circuits, shown in the present example as comprising, in each case, the microphone 23, the battery 24, the primary 25, the secondary 26, the grid 27 and the filament 16 or 20.

   In the embodiment shown in fig. 1, one or the other of the alternating current halves or both can be modulated independently, as shown by the diagrams figs. 2 and 3.

   In fig. 4, the receiver circuit comprises an antenna 40, connected via a primary 41 to earth 42, a secondary 43 shunted by a tuning capacitor 44, telephone receivers 45, a rectifier 46, and a reversing switch 47 which connects rectifier 46 to pass current in either direction, as desired, between conductors 48 and 49.

   The receiving system of fig. 4 thus ensures the de-

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 tection of the modulation on one of the halves of the carrier wave or on 1 * others at will.
In fig. 5, a receiver circuit is shown in which the two halves of the alternating current established in the receiver are directed through telephone circuits in parallel, 50, 51 by rectifiers connected inversely, 52, 53 interposed between the common conductors 54 55 coming from the tuning circuit 56, 57 in inductive relation with the primary 58 which is connected on the one hand to the antenna 59 and on the other hand to the earth 60.

   In this receiver circuit system, two modulations can be detected independently and simultaneously on a single carrier wave, modulated as described above.

   The term “modulation” is used here to designate any operation performed on the alternating current of carrier frequency to make it susceptible to detection.

   It goes without saying that the method forming the object of the invention is applicable to all communication systems in which an alternating current of carrier frequency is generated at a station and in which signals of any kind that are wishes to transmit are imprinted on this current by a suitable modulating means and that, although the invention has been, by way of example, described as applied to a radio-communication system, its field of application is not limited to this specific achievement.
