  " Perfectionnements aux machines à retordre. "

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 19.

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

  "Improvements to twisting machines."
The invention relates to improvements in thread-twisting machines and particularly relates to a movement stop device for such machines.

   Its object is the production of an improved device for stopping movement, the construction of which is simple and practical and which is such as to reduce to a minimum the waste resulting from the breakage of threads as well as to act effectively to prevent what is called in terms of the trade "doubling", accidents which occur when threads in the course of twisting break and become entangled with the twisted threads being wound up on neighboring spools .

   It also relates to the production of an embodiment of the hooks of the movement stopping device designed so that when these hooks are in engagement with the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 threads following a breakage of these, they cause the splitting of the threads at a point between the supplier espolins and the call cylinders, in order to allow the action of these cylinders to withdraw the loose ends, while at the same time the catches hold the ends of the threads so that, when the worker removes the threads from the catches while preparing the resumption of the arrival of the threads between the take-off cylinders, these ends are easily detached from the catches without leaving it - serve with fine and short strands of material.

   These and other objects will emerge more clearly from the description which will follow and which should be read with reference to the accompanying drawings which represent one embodiment of the preferred design of the invention.

   In these drawings:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary cross-sectional view of a yarn twisting machine showing one of the improved motion arresters applied thereto;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary plan view from above of the machine, showing two of the motion arresters each associated with one of the machine's wire take-up mechanisms;
Figure 3 is an end elevation of the improved motion arrestor;

Figure 7 is an elevational view of the end of the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 device for stopping movement opposite to that shown in figure 3.

   The twisting machine partially shown in the accompanying drawings is of the well-known type of construction in which the frame, generally indicated by the numeral 10, is of considerable length so as to allow the simultaneous operation of a battery of pins 11, supported and controlled in the usual way, in order to wind the wires therein and to twist the latter between the pins and the take-up cylinders. In conventional twisting looms one or two lower take-off rolls 12 are provided which extend over the entire length of the machine and are therefore common to all the spindles.

   Supported above the cylinder or take-off cylinders 12, and in engagement with it or them, are a number of upper cylinders 13, each of which corresponds to a pin and with each of which is associated one of the devices d. motion stop comprising the essential features of the present invention. At the rear of the frame 10 is provided an upright 14 on which are mounted a plurality of thread-carrying spools or rollers 15, only one of which is shown in the drawings. Assuming, for purposes of description, that a yarn is to be made and wound up on the spool 11 by twisting two lengths of yarn, these lengths are fed spools 15 parallel or untwisted and come around a rod. guide 16 arranged in the longitudinal direction of the machine.

   The threads then pass to and between the take-off cylinders 12 and 13 which are controlled in the usual manner to unwind the threads from the bolts. From these cylinders, the threads are wound on the spindle 11 and the twisting action applied to the threads takes place between said cylinders and the spindle. It is between these points that the threads break and that as a result of the whirling or helical action imparted to them during the twisting operation,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 the broken ends very often become entangled with the threads being wound on the pins immediately adjacent the opposite sides of the pin 11, thus causing so called "doublots".

   It is with the aim of preventing these doublots that the movement stopping devices are provided and each of these devices, when the wires with which it is associated break off, acts in such a way as to stop the continuation of movement. arrival of wires at the take-off cylinders which continue to operate after the breakage.

   We will now describe one of the movement stop devices and its operation. A support block 17 is fixed in a suitable place on the frame of the machine, for example to the support 18 of the upper cylinder 13. An arm 19 is mounted in its middle to pivot in the block 17 so as to be able to oscillate therein with a its ends disposed on the inlet side of the apnel cylinders and its other end on the outlet side of the latter, the descent of the first end being limited by contact with the inclined edge20 of said block, as indicated by the dotted line in FIG. 1. The second end of the arm 19 is provided with an offset pendant 21, the free end of which ends in a side projecting hook 22, through which the threads to be twisted pass.

   The tension applied to the wires as they are drawn to and over pin 11 and the downward pull thereby exerted on the outer end of arm 19 is sufficient to normally maintain that arm in its inoperative position indicated by solid lines in figure 1. But, if there is any breakage of the threads between the hook 22 and the pin 11, this tension is released and the arm 19, being slightly heavier on the side of its pivot. opposite the hook 22, will immediately oscillate around the said pivot to take the position indicated in dotted lines, from which it will result that the threads, which normally pass freely below the catch of the device, as shown in the figure
3, will be seized., By this snatch, so as to cause their

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 split at this point.

   This breaking action is due to the continuation of the traction exerted by the take-off rolls on the parts of the threads which are, at the time of breakage, passing between said rolls. These parts will always be of relatively short length, which will minimize waste, they will be pulled between the rolls and either wound onto roll 13 or rejected from the rolls by the rapid rotation thereof.

   The catching means located at the inner end of the arm 19 comprise a fixed plate 23 projecting laterally out of the arm and fixed in an adjustable manner in the direction of the length of the latter by means of a small bolt 24 which passes through a slot 25 in said arm. The plate 23 and the rest of the members associated with it are arranged diagonally with respect to the arm 19 at the desired inclination so that the catch is always inclined while rising forward towards the front of the machine, this for a purpose which will appear. shortly. The upper edge of the plate 23 is provided with a boss 26 in which a transverse opening is made to receive the end of an angular rod 27 fixed in an adjustable manner in said boss by means of a screw 28.

   The other end of the rod 27 is used as a pivot for a movable clamping plate 29 which cooperates with the plate 23 to engage threads between them when the arm 19 is actuated. Plate 23 is provided with a angled gripping surface 30 adapted to be engaged by the gripping edge or surface 31 of plate 29, as shown in Figure 5, when the latter is in its normal position. This normal position of the plate 29 is taken by it in all circumstances except when the ends of the wires are withdrawn from between the said plates following the splitting of the wires to the point of their catch by the catch and this normal engagement. of surfaces 30 and 31 is due to the inclination of the plates relative to the arm

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 19.

   Therefore, when the inner end of the arm 19 descends, due to a break in the threads, the catch comprising the plates 23 and 29 has its catching surfaces in contact, and therefore, grips the threads at the moment when those -ci pass through the re-entry slot 32 formed between said plates by the curvature of their lower edges. As the threads come into contact with the surfaces 30 and 31, the continued traction exerted on the portions of the threads between the grab and the take-up rolls will cause said threads to be broken. their point of engagement by the gripping surfaces from which it will result that with the exception of said parts, the wires will cease to be brought between the take-up cylinders.

   The ends of the threads coming from the espolins 15 will then be held between the catching surfaces, and the worker, when he notices the breakage, can detach the said ends from the catch to prepare the resumption of the feeding of the threads between the take-off cylinders and the spindle. When removing the ends of the threads from the catch, it is highly desirable that no short strands of them remain between the catch surfaces and it is primarily for this purpose that the plate 29 is pivotally mounted. so that, when a pull back is exerted on the wires, this plate 29 turns back around its pivot and thus releases its own surface or its own edge from the bevelled surface 30 of the plate 23:

     the rearward movement of said plate 29 is limited by a stopper 33 carried by plate 23, as shown in FIG. 6.

  Examination of this figure will show that the movement of the plate 29 completely frees the two gripping surfaces and that consequently when the ends of the wires are removed, no strands of the latter gripped between said surfaces remain. As soon as the ends have been removed, the plate 29 returns by the effect of gravity to its normal position.

  After we have again passed the ends between

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

 the take-off cylinders, that they have been engaged in the hook 13 and that they have been connected to the spindle 11, the arm 19 is returned to its normal position and the machine continues to operate.

   Sometimes it is necessary to stop the operation of the machine, which results in releasing the tension, or pull down, exerted on the motion stop device and causing this device to stop running. return to its starting position. In such a case it is desirable that the device be prevented from coming into contact with the threads, which would result in causing the latter to split, for this purpose means have been provided for bringing the threads to a point. position in which the catch cannot come into contact with them when the movement stop device is placed in position to act. This thread adjustment is made before the machine is stopped.

   For these purposes, the rod 16 is carried by a swing arm 34 attached to the end of a shaft 35 rotatably supported in suitable bearings 36 on the machine frame. This shaft also carries a disc 37 in which notches 38 and 39 are made. When the arm 34 is in its normal position, or raised position, as shown in FIG. 1, in the notch 38 engages a lin- watchtower 40 pivotally mounted on the machine frame.

   When you want to lower the threads so that they are not attacked by the catch of the movement stopper when the latter is at the end of its downward movement, you first remove from the 'notches 38 the pawl 40, then, using any suitable means, for example a handle (not shown) located on the shaft 35, this shaft is rotated downwards and, by Consequently, the disc 37 as well as the arm 34, until the latch 40 engages in the notch 39.

   This downward movement brings the rod 16 to the position indicated by the dotted line in FIG. 1, so that the parts of the arm between the said rod and the take-up cylinders are located in a substantially horizontal plane and outside.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

 range of the catch of the movement stop device. It is therefore possible to stop the machine and let all the movement stopping devices take their actuation positions without repercussions on the wires.
