" COMPAS D'EPAISSEUR A LECTURE RAPIDE."
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

"QUICK READ THICKNESS COMPASS."
The subject of the present invention is a rapid-reading thickness gauge intended mainly for measuring hot the thickness of sheets leaving, for example, rolling mills.
The instrument thus makes it possible to take the thickness measurement from a distance without having to get too close to the sheet, which is necessary with the instruments in use until now.
The envisaged compass comprises a handle at one end of which are the fixed and movable jaws between which is interposed the sheet whose thickness is to be measured and at the other a handle in front of which is placed a handle. controlling by a suitable linkage with return spring, the rise of the movable jaw. This movable mach @ re is disposed at the end of a piston provided with a rack or screw so as to drive an axis carrying an arm which in its angular displacement causes in its return stroke
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
when the instrument's return spring acts, an index finger mounted with gentle friction and moving in front of a graduated circular dial.
Thus the thickness of the sheet is fixed by the position taken by the index on the dial.
In order to better demonstrate the above description, the appended drawing represents an elevational view of the instrument.
For this purpose, 1 represents the handle, 4 the posterior end or handle, 2 --- the lower branch of the anterior part of the handle carrying the fixed and adjustable jaw 27.3 the upper branch of the anterior part of the handle carrying a cylinder or guide 13 in which moves a piston 14, carrying at its lower part the movable and adjustable jaw 14
The piston 14 carries at 19 a lug into which are introduced the arms of a / fork 12 constituting the end of an elbow lever II articulated at 24 to the handle 1 and biased at 10 by a rod 8 articulated at 2.
to the branch .5 of a control lever 7 pivoting at 6 on the handle. A spring 23 is fixed on the one hand at 25 to the handle and at 26 to the rod 8.
The guide 13 is further provided with a sleeve 15 supporting a pin 16 carrying a pinion in engagement with a corresponding toothing formed on the piston 14.
On this axis 16 is wedged an arm 17 carried a stop 27 destrirée to drive the arm 18 moving gently around the axis 16. The arm 13 carries, in addition to an index 28, a button for the operation by hand. A dial 20 provided with a scale 21 completes the entire device.
The operation is carried out as su.i.t:
Having to measure the thickness of a sheet, the lever 7. is brought closer to the handle .4 and as a result the piston 14 is moved upwards, consequently the jaw 14 moves away from the fixed jaw 27 at the same time as the arm 17 swivels in the direction of arrow A.
The arm 18 is then brought by its button 22 against the lever 17 and the instrument is presented in front of the sheet by inserting
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
the jaws 14 and 27 on either side of the thickness of the sheet. By releasing the lever 7, the return spring 23 acts and the jaw 14 is applied on the fape of the sheet. At the same time the lever 17 has turned in the direction of arrow b and driving the index carrying lever 18 immobilizes it in a position such that the index 28 indicates on the dial 21-3. sheet thickness. The lever 7 is pressed again so as to disengage the instrument and by withdrawing it the thickness indicated by the index is read.
The lever 1 can then be released and the lever 17. turning in the direction of the arrow b brings the crew back to zero.
The only precaution to be taken is to bring the index 28 against the arm 17 as soon as the instrument is open for a measurement to be carried out.
It goes without saying that the dimensions and graduation of the instrument may vary as appropriate, as can the mode of driving lever 17.
The period of attack by rack has been mentioned but one can imagine a suitable screw system or any other equivalent means.
Even the graduation can be conceived as it is appropriate according to the precision which one wishes to obtain. For this purpose, the ratio between the displacement of the piston 14 and the graduation 21 will be established with the amplification necessary for the result to be obtained.
