Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 10>

 for: Device for heating the fresh air in motor vehicles.

   The invention relates to a fresh air heater for automobiles in which cold air passes through a heater heated by engine exhaust gases. The exchange of calories between the exhaust gases of the engine and the cold air is obtained in the fastest and most complete way. This is achieved by placing bodies in the exhaust gas line

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 all the parts of the directors which bring the current of the exhaust gases into intensive contact with the walls of the exhaust pipe and by subdividing the air heater into heating chambers of great heat capacities.

   The directing body can have the shape of a screw thread and can be subdivided if necessary into elements, which have different meanings. It can also be composed of longitudinal sheets pierced with holes on which transverse sheets are fixed which divide the exhaust pipe into a series of partial chambers offset relative to one another, which are successively traversed by the gases of 'exhaust.

   It can also be made up of a series of discs pierced with holes which are provided with a notch and which are fixed by means of this notch on a plate pierced with holes offset one relative to the other alternately. in one direction and in the other. To increase the efficiency of the directing bodies it is also possible to arrange between them particular members intended to produce a swirling action such as discs drilled with holes or retaining cones.

   The steering bodies are preferably formed in such a way that they can be assembled and disassembled as a whole to allow easy assembly and convenient cleaning.

   The exhaust gas line can also consist of several pipes which are connected to a common inlet and outlet pipe. By subdividing the inlet and outlet pipes by means of partition walls, the gas stream can be forced through the pipes successively.

   A large calorific capacity of the heating chamber is obtained by means of an appropriate choice of raw material from a large area of the chambers.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 and by the contact of the walls of the chambers with the exhaust pipe.

   To be guaranteed against the entry of the exhaust gases into the cold air stream, any welds of the exhaust pipe are made in places such that, in the event that one of the welds comes undone, the exhaust gases can only escape into the open air. In addition, the welds at the front end of the exhaust gas line are still particular.

 or freely protected against the action of the cold air current while the vehicle is in motion by a protective shield.

   , We are guaranteed against the defects of etanoheity which could occur in the pipe of the exhaust gases due to corrosion by the evacuation of the water contained in this pipe.

   There is shown in the drawings different forms of execution of a heating device 'of the cold air éxéouté according to the invention.

   Fig.1 is a longitudinal section of a device of this type in which the directing body of the exhaust gas pipe consists of a screw subdivided into element ,.

Fig. 15 is a sectional view of a steering body with three longitudinal plates arranged at 60 relative to the other.
Fig. 16 is a directing body which consists of a single longitudinal plate pierced with a hole on which are fixed non-pierced transverse plates
Fig. 17 is the cross section of FIG. 16
Fig. 18 shows in cross section a directing body in the form of a perforated longitudinal plate, the width of which is equal to the radius of the exhaust pipe on which transverse discs pierced with holes are fixed.

   The heating device according to figs. 1 and 2 has a single central exhaust gas pipe a whose diameter is larger than the diameter of the exhaust pipe f or g. The pipe a ends in this case at the ends at an oone k which is provided with a flange to make possible the connection of the pipe a with the exhaust pipe f by fixing this flange on the flange u of the pipe d 'exhaust f (or g). A screw b is mounted inside the exhaust pipe; it prints to the exhaust

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 a rotational movement and forces them to bathe the interior walls of the exhaust pipe. The screw is sub-
 EMI5.1
 . Its dift'rente8 parts feel different so as to force the gas stream to change its direction of rotation.

   Between the different parts of the via there are also arranged special swirling devices in the form of two stop o8nes n arranged one behind the other which slow down the swirling movement of the exhaust gases and thus activate the 'inverdon of the direction of rotation. At the end of the exhaust pipe there is a perforated disc dl which makes it possible to regulate the flow of gases in the exhaust pipe g in such a way that. as far as possible all calories are transferred to the walls of the exhaust pipe.

   The exhaust pipe a is surrounded by heating chambers c which are pressed into the exhaust pipe and which can therefore be easily replaced. These chambers are given a large surface area so that they can absorb the calories from the exhaust pipe at a speed which corresponds to that with which the exhaust gases rapidly give up their calories to this pipe and yield. those calories in the cold air passing through them. In the exemplary embodiment, this result is obtained by bending a sheet in a zigzag fashion. Consequently, the rooms have a triangular section.

   The two adjacent chambers in contact with each other are supported on the outer surface of the exhaust pipe in order to obtain good transmission of the calories in the walls of the heating chamber. Therefore, for the construction of the chambers, it is preferable to use sheets of high heat conductivity, for example aluminum.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

   The heating chambers are surrounded by a strong envelope t to the inner wall of which a heat-insulating material r is attached by means of a light sheet metal envelope w. In this way, not only is the mechanical resistance of the outer casing increased, but one obtains
 EMI6.1
 also some oontre any damage that the heat-insulating material may suffer.

   The pipes p and q for the introduction and evacuation of the air are fixed on the outer casing,! the front end of this casing, The air enters through the raooord p, flows in the same direction as the exhaust gases, the rear ends of the heater, and in the opposite direction of the exhaust gases. exhaust when it returns to the front end of the heater and $ 'escapes through connection q. The path of air and exhaust gases is indicated by arrows.

   It is also possible to use a direct-motor body formed of a single-piece screw arranged inside the exhaust pipe in a manner which allows its rotation, in which case 11 is held against displacement in the longitudinal direction. by appropriate rings. Under the pressure of the exhaust gases the steering body executes a rotational movement in such a way that the walls which the gas stream encounters constantly change the direction of the exhaust gases.

   The connection of the cone k to the cylindrical pipe a is on the outside of the front wall of the heater. If this connection is obtained by welding, a possible rupture of the weld does not have the consequence of introducing exhaust gas into the fresh air since the exhaust gases can only escape into the open air. . The anterior weld h is particularly,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

 exposed since it is subjected to intense cooling by the air current while the vehicle is in motion.

  This weld is therefore protected by a special shield v which is fixed to the exhaust pipe.

   The embodiment of Figures 6 and 7 differs from that shown in Figures 1 and 2 in its row barns only by 3, so that the guide screw is formed of semi-circular plates arranged transversely fixed on a tube s.

   The plates d have a shape such that they only partially cover the section of the exhaust duct and are offset relative to each other by a certain angle, so that the result is the exhaust gases a helical path. The shape of the sheet d may for example be a semicircle as shown in the figs. 6 and 7 or may be a sector having an opening m according to fig. 8, or a disc having a rectangular notch m as shown in fig. 9, or a disc having a slit o and two segment-shaped notches like shown in fig. 10, or a solid disc with a series of perforations in one of its quadrants as shown in fig. 11. The cross section of the disc can be flat, arched or cone-shaped (fig. 12).

   It is also possible to provide several notches of the same shape m ml (fig. 9) or also notches of different shapes m m2 (fig, 9). The discs d can still be fitted with
 EMI7.1
 nervurg / x which are reported or which are obtained by practicing in the t8le donse notch o and by folding the edge of such a notch (fig. 10). The guide ribs x facilitate the discharge of the exhaust gases produced by the steering body from the middle of the exhaust pipe towards the walls. The screw thread formed by the discs d can be subdivided into several elements in different directions.

 as in the form of execution shown in fig.l.

   The following governing body freezes them. 13 and 14 consists of two transverse perforated longitudinal plates t which intersect, the edges of which rest on the inner walls of the exhaust pipes. In this way, four longitudinal channels are obtained, having in section the shape of a sector of a circle, which are subdivided by transverse plates which are not perforated in the direction of their length, these plates being arranged in a baffle. As a result, when it circulates in the exhaust pipe, the gas current still finds only three quarters of the free section. A quarter is covered by a plate d. The covered section is shown hatched. At each subsequent transverse plate d this covered section is offset by 90.

   The gas is therefore obliged to execute a rotational movement as well and must further pass through the perforations i of the longitudinal plate t; it therefore receives an extraordinary swirling movement and consequently transfers all its heat to the longitudinal plates / and, through these plates, to the walls of the exhaust pipe.

   Instead of two perforated longitudinal plates t, three or more can also be used. A steering body of this kind with three longitudinal plates in cross section has been reproduced in Fig. 15 It subdivides the exhaust pipe into six long channels. tudinals of which two of them diametrically opposed are covered in the same plane by a transverse wall b.

   The directing body according to FIG. 16 consists of a single perforated longitudinal plate t which is subdivided in its length at equal intervals by unperforated semi-circular plates fixed transversely in a baffle on the opposite sides of the longitudinal plate. running the current

 <Desc / Clms Page number 9>

 The gas is obliged to take a corrugated shape in which it must pass alternately from the top and from the bottom 9 through the openings 1 of the perforated plate t.

   Another embodiment is shown in section in fig. 18. In this figure, the directing body consists of a series of discs d in each of which a notch of one quadrant has been made, these discs having perforations i and being clipped on a perforated longitudinal plate t. The discs d are alternately offset by 90, so that the free opening is located alternately above and below the longitudinal plate. The longitudinal plate t in this case has a width which is equal only to the radius of the exhaust pipe.

   The exhaust pipe will generally be a cylindrical body. However, he may also have a different profile; it may for example have the shape of a corrugated pipe with longitudinal or transverse ribs or; helical grooves. If the exhaust pipe has received any profile, the steering body must naturally have a corresponding shape. When using screw-shaped steering bodies according to fig. 1, the exhaust pipe can also be given the form of a via into which the steering body is screwed,
Instead of a single exhaust pipe, it is also possible to use several exhaust pipes mounted in parallel - or in series.

   In the first case! the pipes are connected by their ends to a common inlet pipe and to a common outlet pipe. FIG. 3 shows the front end of a fresh air reheater of this kind with three pipes a and the inlet pipe k,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 10>

 In the case where the pipes are connected in series / the inlet and outlet bulures are subdivided by partitions into independent chambers in each of which a pipe opens. Fig. 4 shows an execution volume of this kind.

   In the case of this figure, three pipes a are arranged near the pipe 1 in the partition walls z force the exhaust gases to pass through the pipes successively. The throttle path is indicated by the arrows.

   Naturally several exhaust pipes fitted as indicated by the rods. 3 to 5 are equipped with directing bodies and heating chambers
In order to protect the exhaust pipe against corrosion it is desirable to provide for the drainage of water.
