<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
---IL
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

The present improvement aims, like the main patent, at electric regulators, and more particularly at vibrating contact regulators acting on the excitation of a machine in order to regulate an electrical characteristic of a circuit or of a machine.
It also relates to the means intended to accelerate the adjustment of the tension by making it possible to carry out an in-
EMI1.2
appears to be free from all slow-functioning components and it differs mainly from the arrangements described in the main patent in that the adjustment is produced by the inductive effect of rapid variations in the line voltage *
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
In the well-known vibrating regulators comprising an "anti-pumping" coil case excited according to an electrical characteristic of the excitation circuit of the machine to be regulated, the excitation varies within wide limits. When the load on the machine to be regulated increases, the excitation of the "anti-pumping" coil also increases, and modifies the action of the adjustment coil,
so that the excitation of the machine does not vary in the desired proportions to maintain, for example, a very uniform tension, or an increasing tension proportional to the load.
It is observed, in fact, by using the regulating devices criticized above, that is to say those which include the "anti-pumping" devices excited directly by the excitation circuit, a sub-compounding of the machine. adjust*
The invention aims to establish an improved regulator and an adjustment method making it possible to energize the "anti-pumping" devices so that they do not cause undesirable variations in the effect of the regulator, sub-compounding for example, whatever the limits within which the excitation of the machine must vary.
The novel features and advantages of the invention will be better understood by reference to the following description and to the accompanying drawings, given merely by way of example and without any limitation, and in which:
Fig. 1 shows a schematic view of one of the embodiments of the invention applied to the regulation of a direct current generator.
Fig. 2 is a variant of Fig. 1
Fig. 3 is a schematic view of a variant of the invention used to regulate the alternators *
In FIGS. 1 and 2, regulating devices applicable to direct current machines have been shown, 1 designating such a generator comprising an armature 2 and an inductor winding 3. The armature is connected to the conductors 4 of a control circuit. debit. The inductor winding 3 can be excited by the armature 2, but, in the figure, it is shown as excited by an exciter 5 comprising an armature 6 and an inductor connected in series with a regulating resistor 8, at the terminals armature 6.
A regulator 9, comprising contacts 10 and 11, must regulate the voltage of the generator,
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
by rapidly opening or closing a bypass across resistor 8. Its contacts are, for simplicity, shown as acting directly across resistor 8, but it is obvious that relays can be interposed, as shown Fig.3 and as it is preferable to do it in the same way * The contact 10 is fixed, and the contact 11 is movable with the vibrating member 12 actuated by a core 13. This core modifies the relative position of the contacts under the influence of an adjustment coil 14 excited by the conductors 4 coming from the generator.
In FIG. 1, a second coil 15 has been provided causing a continuous vibratory movement between the contacts and it has been assumed to be inductively connected to the excitation circuit, by means of an inductive device 16. This device preferably comprises a winding transformer
EMI3.1
primary 17 obeying the voltage at the :: terminals of e1'll'cde: inductor 3 of Generator 1, and whose secondary hydraulic 18 is connected so as to #: ult0r coil 15. The attraction of the main coil 14 is against; laughed by? A spring 19 which tends to keep the contacts armed.
According to a variant shown in 'alg.2, it ast porsibi to eliminate the coil 15, by simply connecting the secondary winding of the tri = s- -.formateur 16 in series with the coil 14, so that the pulses of t <: J! 'l: 3ion of the transformer have the effect of modifying the excitation of the primary coil 14 and of ensuring the vibration of the contacts, without it having s4vauGr.:poiavda- ge .
The fctictionnemsit of the device of Fig-1 can be represented as follows: If the tension of the generator 1, or the tension between the conductors 4, is lower than the normal value that we set for ourselves, the spring 19 feems contacts 10 and 11. Consequently, the excitation of the exciter S increases rapidly, and so does the voltage applied to winding 3.
If there is an increase in the voltage at the terminals of the
EMI3.2
inductor bearing 3, a voltage is induced in 11 secondary a-iroulemait 18 of the trensfozmatour 16, so as to excite the winding 15 under a voltage pulse which causes a current acting in the same direction as the current in the coil 18.
This action has the effect of opening the contacts before the instant.
---HE
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
would open them up coil 14 alone, so that the oscillations of the voltage wave have a lesser amplitude * In other words, coil 14 avoids compounding, and it should be noted that the excitation of coil 15 is not influenced by the value of the tmsion to the good of the excitation winding 3, but that it is influenced by the rate of change of the electrical characteristics of the excitation circuit to which alla is subjected.
If, on the contrary, the voltage at the terminals of the generator 1, between the conductors 4, rises above the value, which one wishes to stop it, the coil 14 acts to maintain the contacts * This results in the inserting resistance into the exciter circuit 5, and decreasing the voltage applied to field winding 3.
When there is a decrease in the applied voltage, the result is a pulse of tone across the winding 15, through the transformer 16, which causes a current to flow, and as a result, a voltage occurs. current, the magnetizing effect of which is opposite to that of coil 14: which allows spring 19 to close contacts 10 and 11 before the instant when coil 14 alone would have effected this closing.
As a consequence, the amplitude of the voltage occurrance is reduced, and pumping is avoided, without any of the difficulties arising from non-uniform action of the "antipar.page" coil in the different zones of The variations in the voltage of the exciter * For the variant shown in Fig. 2, one can imagine a similar operation * There is a rapid increase in the voltage applied to the inductor winding 3 as a result of the against contacts 10 and 11, a voltage pulse is added in series with the voltage coming from conductors 4 on coil 14,
so that the contacts open sooner than they would if this coil acted alone * If, on the contrary, there is a rapid decrease in the voltage applied to the winding 3, following a separation contacts, a voltage pulse acts in opposition to the voltage applied to coil 14, and allows faster closing than the coil alone would allow, leaving no room for an appreciable oscillation amplitude of the voltage to settle.
In Fig. 3, the system produced is particularly suitable for use with an alternator: 20 designates such a machine connected to a
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
distribution circuit comprising the conductors 21. This alternator is provided with an excitation winding 22, or inductor, mounted so as to receive the current from an exciter 23 comprising the armature 24 and the inductor
25. A fixed resistor 26 and the adjustment resistor 27 are connected in series with the excitation winding 25, across the armature 24 of the exciter 23.
A relay 28, comprising contacts 29 and 30, is used to close or open a bypass circuit on the adjustment resistor 27. The contact 29 is fixed, and the contact 30 is movable integrally with the lever 31 controlled by the devices. Suitable for example comprising a solenoid 32 and a core 33. Solenoid 32 may be energized by a suitable source of electrical energy, eg the voltage of the exciter itself. A spring 34 is used to close the contacts, when the solenoid 32 is de-energized *
A regulator 35, comprising contacts 36 and 37, is used to control the operation of relay 28.
The contact 36 is fixed, and the contact 37 is carried by a vibrating element 38 controlled by a core 39 'This core modifies the relative position of the contacts, under the influence of a main control coil 40 mounted at so as to be excited according to one of the electrical characteristics of the alternator to be adjusted. In the present case, this coil is connected to the terminals of one of the phases of the conductors 21, to obey the voltage variations of the generator.
The attraction of the core 40 is thwarted by a spring 41 which tends to keep the contacts 36 and 37 closed. The regulator is provided with an "anti-pumping" device which is similar to that of FIGS. 1 and 2; but, in this case, the "anti-pump" coil 42 is mounted on a separate polarized magnetic core, for example a permanent magnet 43, arranged so as to cooperate with an armature 44 integral with the contact 38. Those skilled in the art can see that the magnetic core 43 can be polarized by means of a suitable source of very stable unidirectional current, for example a battery of accumulators, and that such an electro can be replaced by a permanent magnet, without to go beyond the scope of the invention.
The "anti-pump" coil is, in the case under consideration, placed on a polarized core which is magnetically independent of the core of the alternating current electric main, because it is not practical to increase.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
or to decrease the pull on the contact lever, when desired, when trying to combine the voltage pulse of the "anti-pump" coil and the rapidly varying alternating flux in the control core. The "anti-pumping" coil is connected so as to be excited according to one of the electrical characteristics of the excitation circuit, via a transformer 45 with primary winding 46 and secondary winding 47.
It should be understood by those in the art that the primary winding 46 can be connected across a resistor of the excitation circuit of the exciter, or excitation 22 of the alternator 20, or any other equivalent means not departing from the scope of the invention, but, to settle ideas, and to give an example different from that shown in FIGS.
1 and 2, it has been connected across resistor 25, so that the excitation of coil 42 varies with the rate of change of current in the exciter inductor.
In order to provide the means of adjusting the effect of the "an.tipom-. Page" coil, when it is used in conjunction with excitation systems which obey more or less quickly, it is advantageous to use means which allow- attempt to increase or decrease, at will, the speed at which the anti-pumping electro obeys. For example, if this electro is used in conjunction with a very fast obedient excitation device, the action of the "anti-pumping" coil can be too fast and can open the contacts in too short a time.
To modify the speed of action of this coil, it is possible to use a coil 48 with poor electrical conductivity, surrounding the core 43, and to arrange on this coil of the taps 49 placed within reach of a short-circuiting device 50, so as to allow the short-circuiting of an appropriate number of turns surrounding the core, resulting in delay of the variations of flux in this core. It is obvious to those skilled in the art that these control means of the speed with which the anti-pumping system obeys, can be applied not only to Fig. 3, for which they are described, but also to Figs 1 and 2.,,
It is not necessary to explain in detail the operation of Fig. 3 and the points which distinguish it from Figs 1 and 2.
If the voltage of the alternator 20 rises above a determined value which one wishes to avoid, the contacts 36 and 37 separate, the coil 32 of the relay 28 is energized,
