 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

  Method for breaking bonds in vacuum tubes.

   In the operation of vacuum tubes, and in particular also in the manufacture of such tubes, it is often necessary after the completion of the tubes to interrupt any conductive connections within them. The present invention relates to a method for performing such an interrupt. The problem which is the basis of the present invention can be solved by the fact that the connection is established from the start by means of a thin metal wire and that the latter is melted by a special current which circulate there. The passages necessary for this purpose through the glass wall of the tube, however, do not generally exist apart from this purpose.

   When special passages are foreseen which are used simply for the fusion of a similar wire but which apart from that are unused these passages are in the following a source of trouble from the electrical point of view for the whole duration existence of the tube and on the other hand they can cause confusion.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

   The interruption is advantageously effected by the fact that the line to be interrupted takes the form of a thin metal strip which contains in appropriate places one or more holes sufficiently large so that the transverse section becomes very small at the ends. places in question. A similar location can be vaporized or atomized by an alternating electromagnetic field produced in the vicinity of the tube. The metallic strip to be interrupted must also be dimensioned in such a way and the alternating current field must be arranged in such a way that eddy currents of intensity arise in the metallic strip such as at the place of the 'interruption the vaporization or spray temperature is reached.

   The problem of breaking conductive links can arise from different points of view. It may for example be desirable during the vacuum generating operation that certain metal parts be conductively connected together while when the tube is completed these parts no longer or even cannot be connected together.

   For example, it is frequently desirable, in order to produce a good vacuum, to heat all parts within the tube to an elevated temperature during the evacuation operation. In order to raise the temperature for such conductive parts, it may be necessary to connect the intended conductor parts of a material which is a good conductor of electricity or of heat.

   In a multiple amplifier tube, it is particularly advisable to connect together during the manufacturing process the similar electrodes, for example the anodes.

   The three figures of the drawing show by way of example an embodiment of a multiple tube in which the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 method of the present invention can be applied.

   Fig. 1 shows a similar tube in which the upper part of the glass bulb has been broken open, the tube being seen from the front.

   Fig. 2 shows only the upper part of such a tube in side view.

   Fig. 3 shows on a larger scale, in perspective, the connecting bridge according to the present invention.

   The glass bulb which contains the two electrode systems 2 and 3, the third electrode system 4 and the coupling elements which are combined in groups 5 and 6 are designated in the figures by 1.

   The anodes 7 and 8 of the systems 2 and 3 are connected by a bridge 9 (advantageously made of magnesium, for example a piece of magnesium tape) so that the anode 7 is conductively connected to the support 10 and the anode 8 to the support 11 while the metal strip 9 is placed between the supports 10 and 11. This metal strip has a circular hole 12 - easy to make by stamping - so that the interruption of the metal can occur. do in lengths 13 and 14 of metal.

   A piece of mica sheet 15 is placed in the manner of a screen between the metal strip 9 on the one hand and the three electrode systems 2, 3 and 4 on the other hand.

   During the removal of gases from the anode, the bonding of the anodes 2 and 3 together is useful; however, after the manufacture of the tube the anodes must be separated again, a coil carrying an alternating current is placed around the tube. After a short duration of action of the high frequency currents, the metal strip 9 is interrupted at the points 13 and 14. The spraying of the magnesium still presents, contrary to what is achieved with other interrupting means. possible, the particular advantage that the tube

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 does not get worse but on the contrary the vacuum is even improved.

   The screen 15 produces this effect that during the spraying of the magnesium no metallic precipitation occurs on the support serving as insulation for the electrodes.

   The present invention is not limited to making an interruption in conductive links. It may be useful in certain circumstances to remove, at one point of a vacuum vessel, a non-conductive body existing there. This may also be done by means of the present invention, for example by the fact that the The non-conductive body considered is fixed at the beginning in metallic supports such as magnesium ribbons, while in the following it is released by vaporization by means of eddy currents.

   Summary.

   The invention relates to:
1.- A method and a device for removing conductive bonds inside vacuum tubes, characterized in that by the action of eddy currents, a connecting bridge is cut which is sprayed into a vacuum or is made of a volatilizable metal.
