Description

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

  "Process for the production of cellulose ethers and particularly cellulose acetate."
The etherification of cellulose, and particularly the manufacture of cellulose acetate, is generally carried out in large volume rotary drums provided with external heating and cooling devices.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

  In order to prevent the reaction from developing unevenly in the drums, attempts have been made to eliminate in apparatus of this type the usual stirring devices and to stir the mass subjected to the reaction in a space completely. free in which one limited oneself to introducing balls or rollers in order to make possible a uniform mixture of the mass during the rotation.

     It has been found, however, that the free space does not fulfill the purpose well because the wall of the drum slides easily over the surface of the mass subjected to the reaction. The balls or stones, however, although they divide the mass, have the disadvantage of acting at the same time in a detrimental way on the walls of the drum, which are formed, generally, by coatings unassailable to acids. However, said drawbacks are completely eliminated when, in the apparatus which has just been described, fixed cross members or beams inclined in a suitable manner are used inside the drum instead of agitators. , balls or pebbles indicated above.

   The accompanying drawing shows an apparatus provided internally with crossbars or beams a1 of the aforementioned type. These crosspieces can, at will, be fixed in the drum in any number at any inclination; we can also, at will, place them in chicane in any direction. When the drum rotates, these cross members do not act to

 triturate the mass, but they cut its core so as to continuously form new surfaces through which the mixture of reactants can penetrate into said mass and spread inside the individual fibers. This prevents the device from sliding around the stationary mass without mixing it in a simple and effective manner.

   The heating or cooling devices as well as the controls for rotating the drum can be arranged in any way. As shown in the drawing, the control can be applied either to the outer surface of the casing of the drum, or to the end of said drums.
