 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

    "Improvements in the manufacture of wagon wheels"
This invention relates to the manufacture of wagon wheels and aims, particularly the centrifugal casting of steel wagon wheels, preferably in a composite mold, so as to cause an even distribution of the metal, to constitute the rim of the wheel to the 'using a homogeneous, dense and wear-resistant metal by cooling this part of the wheel more quickly and at the same time allowing the body or / center of the wheel to re-cool.

   The invention also comprises various characteristics which will be described below with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figs 1 is a section on I-I (Fig. 2) of a mold established with a view to its application in the practice of the invention.

   Fig. 2 is a plan of this mold, seen from above.

   Fig. 3 is a section along III-III (Fig. 4) dtune variant of this mold.

   Fig. 4 is the plan, seen from above.

   In these figures, 2 denotes a rotary table on which the mold used for the manufacture of parts by centrifugal casting is intended to rotate at a predetermined speed which depends on the diameter and the thickness of the wheel to be molded. as well as other factors. On the upper surface of the table 2 is mounted a base plate or mold base 3 on which is placed. the lower sand core 4 previously established.

   In a central hollow of this core 4 is fitted by its base 6 (which prevents it from oscillating under the influence of the flow of metal or of centrifugal force) an intermediate core 5. Around the lower core 4 is arranged a lower molding shell section 7 on which is mounted an intermediate shell section 8 which molds the major part of the running surface and the flange of the wheel, and on said section shell 8 is mounted in turn the

 upper shell section9,

   The upper sand core

 rieur 10 is supported by an annular shoulder 12 integral with the upper shell section 9 Studs
11 which rise from the lower core 4 help to support the upper core 10. The parts are held together by clamping between the base plate 3 and the upper plate 13 by means of clamps 14.

   The upper plate 13 has a circular opening 15 provided with a cylindrical rim and intended to receive a head element or extension 16 in which are inserted the weight and the external extension of the hub. This element 16 is fixed to the plate. upper 13 by retaining bands or segments 17 which surround said element and are fixed to each other by clips 18 and to the upper plate 13 by clips 19. The assembly is held in a central position on the rotary table by studs 20.

   The shell section 8 has holes 21 into which pincers can be engaged, so that this section and the entire mold can conveniently be handled with a crane or other lifting device during assembly for the purpose. to bring the mold to the rotary table 2 of the molding machine,
When the various sand cores have been prepared, the mold is set up as follows:

   The lower core 4 is first placed in the center of the base plate 3, the central core 5 being itself placed in the center of said core 4, The lower shell section 7 is then placed, this section being firmly held in place. correct position, relative to the lower core 4, by the interlocking of the respective conical surfaces of these two elements. The shell section 8 is then lowered onto the section of

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 shell 7, the interlocking of the conical surfaces of these two elements ensuring their rapid and exact assembly.

   The upper shell section 9 is then placed, and as provided between this section and section 8 a conical fit similar to that provided between section 8 and section 7, the exact assembly of section 9 with section 8 is also done quickly. We then lower. the upper sand core 10, this core being guided by the conical faces 22 of the section 9 and being brought to the outflow of the said section by its meeting with its shoulder 12. The upper plate 13 and the extension 16 are then put in place, then the parts are tightened using the clamps 14, the retaining segments 17 are fitted and they are fixed using the staples 18 and 19.

   The mold is ready to be placed on the relative table 2 and to receive its load of metal. The clearance provided between the conical faces 22 of the upper shell section and the corresponding faces of the upper sand core not only facilitates the positioning of said core but also constitutes a device for ventilating the mold.

   It can thus be seen that the rim and the flange of the wheel, as well as the lateral parts of these elements, are formed in a permanent shell, while the web or solid part and the hub of the wheel are formed in a mold composed of dry sand cores.

   During molding, the table and the mold fixed to it by the studs 20 are imparted to a rotational movement of a predetermined speed. For example, it has been found that in the case of a 66-centimeter wheel, a satisfactory speed is that of between 300 and 400 revolutions per minute.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

   It is preferable to decrease this speed in the case of larger wheels and to increase it in the case of smaller wheels. The metal is then poured into the mold and the latter is driven in a speed movement up to that the metal has solidified which normally takes about three minutes for a 66 centimeter wheel. When the metal is poured into the extension 16, this metal strikes the rounded upper part 23 of the core 5 and is thrown against the inner side walls 24 of the extension 16, then distributed evenly outward in all directions to the periphery of the mold cavity, under the action of centrifugal force.

   At the periphery of the mold cavity, the molten metal strikes the cooling surface or shell formed by sections 7, 8 and 9, causing rapid cooling and solidification of the steel while it is subjected to the pressure resulting from the centrifugal force. This pressure has the effect of driving the occluded gases out of the metal, and the cooling ensures obtaining a dense, homogeneous and wear-resistant metal close to the running surface of the wheel When the part of the cavity in which the rim has been formed has become completely solid,

   the molten metal fills the space formed between the sand cores 4 and 10 and constituting the wall or web of the wheel. This thin part is thus enabled to cool more slowly due to the fact that the sand cores do not dissipate heat as quickly as the shell; furthermore, these cores flex and allow the steel to contract The last eortioii of metal casting for

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 filling the mold constitutes the upper section of the hub, and the food! then rises in the cavity of the extension 16 to form a weight. It is this metal cast last which is the hottest; it compensates for the nprmal withdrawal of the hub, which ensures that a solid hub section is obtained.

   At high rotational speeds, it is preferable that the walls 24 of the extension 16 go in narrowing as you get closer to the top, so that the metal is biased down, i.e. towards the top. inside the mold, under the action of centrifugal force.

  Since the pouring opening 16a of the extension 16 is relatively narrow, it is desirable to provide a fixed extension (not shown) for directing the metal towards the orifice of this extension.

   In the variant of Figures 3 and 4, the mold comprises a single ring 31 forming a shell which is substituted for the three sections 7, 8 and 9 of Figures 1 and 2. The upper and lower elements are fixed here to each other by rods 32 and wedges 33. In addition, this variant includes another extension arrangement 34, the upper part of which constitutes a shoe.

   When the wheels have been cast, they are subjected to heat treatment or annealing, as is usual in the manufacture of steel castings.

   The advantages of the composite molds which have just been described reside in the fact that the metal of the shell makes the mold sufficiently robust so that it can withstand a rapid rotational movement. At the same time, the ef-

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

 The metal cooling effect ensures that a dense, wear-resistant and homogeneous metal is obtained at the location of the rim, while the sand cores enveloping the canvas and the wheel hub prevent too rapid cooling of these elements, so that a sturdy and tenacious structure is obtained.

   In addition, during this operation the sand cores 4 and 10 flex and allow the steel to contract as in an adinary sand mold. Finally, the combined application of sand and metal achieves a considerable saving in the amount of sand required.

   Another advantage of the invention lies in the fact that the ferrostatic pressure necessary to produce sound castings is obtained with a notably lower loss in the weights, since the centrifugal pressure makes it unnecessary to provide a head. static and produces a ferrostatic pressure much greater than that which could be obtained with the height of the static load ensured by the usual mass-burbot. This obviously results in a significant saving of metal.

   Of course, the invention is capable of receiving other embodiments and numerous modifications of detail without departing from its spirit.
