<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

La figure 1 est une coupe longitudinale d'un premier mode de réalisation de,l'accouplement qui fait l'objet de l'invention;
La figure 2 est une coupe par II-II de la figure 1;
La figure 3 est une coupe longitudinale d'un deuxième mode de réalisation de 1'invention; La, figure 4 est une coupe par IV-IV de la figure 3; La.figure 5 est une coupe longitudinale d'un troisième mode de réalisation de l'invention;
La figure 7 est une coupe analogue à la fi- gure 6, mais faite au moment où l'accouplement est terminé; La. figure 8 est une coupe longitudinale d'un autre mode de'réalisation de l'invention ;
La figure 9 montre, à plus grande échelle, une coupe d'un détail de l'accouplement représenté sur la figure 8;
La figure 10 est une coupe longitudinale de l'accouplement d'une conduite à haute pression et d'une pièce moulée telle qu'un robinet;
La. figure 11 est une coupe longitudinale de l'accouplement de deux pièces moulées;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

-Coupling for high pressure pipes "
The present invention a. the object is a coupling of pipes which presents a perfect seal and great resistance to the high pressures currently used in pipes used to feed turbines, for example.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
ple, or for other uses, this coupling also resisting very well to expansion forces. It is in fact known that the increasingly strong pressures used today in fluid conduits make it necessary to produce particularly well-established couplings for these conduits so as to avoid a possible leak at these points.
The invention is essentially characterized by the fact that both. the ends of the pipes to be coupled are slightly flared in a truncated cone, then folded back and kept in contact by rings, the outer surface of which is formed by planes slightly inclined with respect to the contact plane of the aforementioned folded parts, a clamp whose inner surface corresponds to the inclined planes of the aforementioned rings maintaining said rings; to ensure sealing, it is possible either to weld the periphery of the aforementioned folded-back parts or between these parts, or to crush, between said folded-down parts, a ring of suitable shape which will thus form a sealing joint.
The subject of the invention is also a variant of the aforementioned coupling, a variant in which each of the coupling retaining rings is formed of two parts movable with respect to one another, each of these parts being in two parts.
The invention also relates to another variant of the above coupling; in this variant, an expansion bellows which is simply welded to the ends of the parts to be coupled, this bellows being intended to give greater elasticity to the coupling produced, is interposed between the aforementioned folded-down portions of the pipes.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
In the accompanying drawing, there is schematically shown, and by way of example only, various embodiments of the coupling which is the subject of the invention:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a first embodiment of the coupling which is the subject of the invention;
Figure 2 is a section through II-II of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a longitudinal section of a second embodiment of the invention; Fig. 4 is a section through IV-IV of Fig. 3; La.figure 5 is a longitudinal section of a third embodiment of the invention;
Fig. 6 is an enlarged-scale sectional view of a detail of the coupling shown in FIG. 5, before this coupling is completely completed;
Figure 7 is a section similar to Figure 6, but taken when the coupling is complete; Figure 8 is a longitudinal section of another embodiment of the invention;
Figure 9 shows, on a larger scale, a sectional view of a detail of the coupling shown in Figure 8;
Figure 10 is a longitudinal section of the coupling of a high pressure line and a molded part such as a valve;
Figure 11 is a longitudinal section of the coupling of two molded parts;
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
Finally, fig. 12 is a section on a larger scale of a detail of a variant of the coupling shown in Figures 10 and 11,
If we refer to Figures 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawing ,. it can be seen that the ends 1 of the pipes to be coupled are slightly flared in a truncated cone at 2 and that the end edges are * folded down perpendicularly to their axis at 3. On these ends thus shaped there are locks 4, the over- inner face corresponds to the conicity given to the aforementioned ends; these rings press on the folded edges 3 of the pipes.
In addition, the surface 5 of said rings, instead of being parallel to the coupling plane of the pipes, is formed by two planes slightly inclined with respect to this plane, which constitutes one of the essential characteristics of the invention.
The folded edges 3 of the pipes and the adjacent outer edges of the rings are chamfered and a weld 6 is carried out along this chamfer, so as to ensure a perfect seal at the joint. This is further maintained by the two rings 4 which are clamped on the folded parts 3 of the ducts by a clamp 7, the inner surface of which is formed by inclined planes corresponding to the surface. 5 rings.
The collar 7 is formed of two parts which are brought together for the tightening of the rings 4, by means of bolts 8 for example, arranged on flanges 9 integral with the collar. The bringing together of the two parts of the collar 7 under the action of the tightening of the bolts produces the relative depression of the rings 4 in the manner of wedges, in the collar 7; we ob-
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
Thus, very effective tightening of the seal is maintained, so that the bolts only have to withstand a very small part of the force corresponding to the internal pressure prevailing in the pipe.
In Figures 3 and 4, there is shown a variant of the coupling described above, In this variant, the welding of 1 to be coupled instead of being made along a chamfer made at the periphery of the folded parts 3 of these pipes and the rings 4 of FIG. 1 is simply made on the folded down parts 3 of the pipes; in this way, the rings and the folded parts
3 are no longer welded together and thus no longer form a whole 'able to present a certain rigidity; this rigidity can, in fact, be a nuisance for the local dilations and contractions which can occur at certain points of the coupling, in particular when water condenses at the lower part of this coupling.
In addition, in the device shown in Figures 3 and 4, each of the rings 4 of Figure 1 has been replaced by two rings, the first ring 15 placed on the folded part 3 of one of the pipes, bears on its outer surface. a groove 10 in which the annular projection II of the second two-part ring 16 is placed; the outer surface of this second ring is formed by planes slightly inclined relative to the contact plane of the folded parts 3.
Thanks to the fact that the clamping rings are formed from two parts 15 and 16, this set of the rings 15 and 16 can be adapted exactly to the spacing of the surfaces.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
inside the collar 7; it suffices to have at one's disposal a set of rings 16 which can be easily replaced, in order to adapt the coupling to the distance between the interior surfaces of the collar 7, which may be necessary, since it is difficult to adjust the thickness of the coupling exactly, Furthermore, thanks to the fact that the rings 16 can rotate in the groove 10 with respect to the rings 15, the position of the collar 7 and consequently the position of the flanges can be adjusted 9 for easy access to the bolts 8.
In the variant of the invention shown in Figures 5, 6 and 7, the welding of the folded parts 3 of the pipes is carried out in a manner different from that of the preceding figures. In this variant, a metal ring 12 made of mild steel for example is placed between the folded parts 3.
The coupling is then tightened before the clamp 7 is placed, by means of an appropriate device, for example by means of a certain number of hydraulic cylinders distributed around its periphery. Each of the rings 15 is then connected to the poles of a suitable electrical installation and the current is passed through the closed circuit, at the same time as the hydraulic jacks are operated. The passage of the current causes, by Joule effect, a softening of the ring 12 which constitutes a narrow section of the circuit.
Under the effect of this softening and of the pressure exerted by the hydraulic cylinders, the ring 12 flattens and takes the shape shown in? figure 7; a very effective welding of the parts was thus achieved.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
folded down 3 of the pipes. Of course, the pressure exerted by the jacks must be suitably regulated, with respect to the intensity of the current flowing through the ring 12 and, therefore, with respect to the softening, in order to obtain the crushing at the suitable moment.
In Figures 8 and 9 there is shown a variant in which the seal, instead of being obtained by welding as in the previous embodiments, is obtained by means of a metal ring 13 with a square section, for example; this ring is placed in grooves 14 of suitable shape made on the folded parts 3 of the pipes to be coupled and it is crushed between these folded parts 3 by the energetic tightening of the clamp 7; a very efficient seal is thus obtained in a very simple manner, ensuring the sealing of the coupling.
In Figures 10 and 11 there is shown a variant of the device shown in. Figure 3, this variant applying more particularly in the case where one has to couple a pipe 1 to a molded part 17, or two molded parts 17 and 17 ', this variant being intended to give the coupling a certain flexibility, so as to allow local contractions and dilations which may occur; in fact, the device shown in FIG. 3 has a certain flexibility in the case of the coupling of two pipes, but it would have much less in the case where it is applied to the coupling of one. conducted to one molded part or to the coupling of two molded parts.
To avoid
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
This drawback is therefore interposed:, in these two cases, between the pipe 1 and the molded part 17, or between the two molded parts 17 and 17 ', an expansion bellows 18; this bellows is formed by a metal washer which has been folded back on itself, one of the sides of this folded washer being welded to the folded part 3 of the pipe (figure 10) or to the molded part 17 '( figure 11), and the other side of the washer being welded to the molded part 17 in the same way.
In fig. 12 shows a variant of the device shown in FIGS. 10 and
11; in this figure 12, the expansion bellows instead of being formed by a washer folded back on itself, is formed by two metal washers 19 and 19 'welded at 20, the two washers
19 and 19 '. being welded to the castings 17 and
17 'in the same way as in the device shown in FIG. 11, or in line 1 and in. molded part 17, in the case of figure 10.
In the case where one of the two parts to be coupled is a molded part (FIG. 10, 11 and 12), the ring 15 can be removed and replaced by a flange 21 forming an integral part of the part 17 (or 17 '); this rim 21 then carries a circular groove 22 in which the circular projection 11 of the two-part ring 16 engages.
A coupling thus established in accordance with the invention makes it unnecessary, in particular thanks to the presence of the rings 4 or of the rings 15 (Figures 1, 3, 5, 8 and 10), the reinforcement of the sensitive part of the coupling formed by holidays 23,
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
operation which is always long and costly; further to the fact that the. rings 4 (figure 1) or the rings
15 (Figure 10) relate to the entire surface of the tapered and folded ends of the conduits, the seal is perfectly maintained and no tendency to open said seal under the effect of strong pressures that may prevail in the conduit is to be avoided. to fear.
It is understood that the various embodiments of the coupling which have been described above and which have been represented in the appended drawing, have been given only by way of example and that we could make modifications in the details of realization of this coupling, without the economy of the invention being affected by such modifications. Thus, the clamp 7 could be in several parts instead of being in two parts as shown, and the number of bolts 8 intended to tighten the coupling can be any.
