<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Cork substitute and proceeds for its manufacture
The object of this invasion is a cork replacement product, inexpensive and easy to manufacture, which can be substituted for the latter in all applications where it is used as an insulator and which has the great advantage of being non-flammable. This insulation product is constituted by an agglomerate of fire-retardant sawdust, rendered rot-proof and molded into any suitable form.
To agglomerate the sawdust and make it imput-target, a flame retardant binder such as silicate of potash or soda is used, heated to boiling and added with iron oxide and a reducing coagulant such as sodium borate. The necessary proportion of iron oxide and reducing coagulant varies according to the species of wood, but @
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
by way of example, there may be mentioned as an average proportion 1% of iron oxide to 0.5% of sodium borate, both calculated on the weight of the pulverulent materials used for the manufacture of the silicate.
The sawdust, previously dried to humidity, is thoroughly mixed while hot with the binder diluted with boiling water, after which the paste thus obtained is compressed slowly and under high pressure in heated molds.
As soon as the colloidal properties of the sawdust begin to develop, the mold is removed from the mold, then the chipboard is exposed to a stream of cold air to solidify it. Heating under pressure in the molds until the beginning of the development of the colloidal properties has the effect of removing from the sawdust the putrescible material which is fixed by the essential binder.
