Description

  "PERFECTIONNEMENTS AUX PENDULES ELECTRO-MAGNETIQUES"

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

   A simple titre d'exemple, un mode de réalisation préféré de l'invention se trouve décrit ci-après en référence au dessin annexée dans lequel ;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

   <Desc / Clms Page number 1>

  "IMPROVEMENTS TO ELECTRO-MAGNETIC CLOCKS"
The electro-magnetic pendulums used until now have a certain number of disadvantages:
They are generally too bulky due to the length of the balance and are difficult to fit into fittings for fireplaces, small furniture, or office clocks of the kind.

   In models of reduced volume, which necessarily include a short, fast-moving balance, the setting obtained lacks exaatitude:
We have to provide the ratchet wheel with too many teeth that are much too tight, unless we provide for this ratchet wheel a normal diameter.

   As the movements of the balance are very rapid, the number of contacts for energizing the electro-motor is too large.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

   If we want to reduce the frequency of these contacts, we have to provide too high a weight to increase the inertia, which has the disadvantage of requiring a significantly greater electro-motive force for restarting and causing rapid wear of the axes of oscillation at the same time as an exaggerated consumption of current therefore a premature exhaustion of the battery.

   In addition, it is usually the cam provided on the axis of the balance which produces the contact at the same time as the advance of the pawl and the ratchet, which makes it necessary to isolate the balance, and since the contact is made. produced by friction, it is necessary to use a very hard metal, nickel, steel or the like, which oxidizes easily and is less good conductor for the low voltage used than the platinum usually employed for tip contacts, which do not require moreover to insulate only the terminal of the platinum-plated screw.

   The use of these friction contacts with a large surface is probably motivated to facilitate the passage of the current but it requires a greater force which leads to the use of a balance of relatively high weight.

   The device established according to the present invention makes it possible to avoid the various drawbacks pointed out and to realize an electromagnetic pendulum mechanism of extra reduced dimensions with a low weight balance which does not cause wear and does not require very low current consumption, while ensuring very precise adjustment thanks to the slow movement of the balance. In addition, the cam acts in both directions on the free end of a very long leaf spring in order to actuate the pawl of the ratchet in one direction and in the other direction to produce contact.

   The length of said blade decreases the force of the cam, that is to say does not hinder the movement of the balance, and allows the contact screw to be placed closer to the attachment of this blade, that is to say to obtain nevertheless

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 sufficient contact pressure to ensure perfect passage of the current ..:.

   By way of example, a preferred embodiment of the invention is described below with reference to the appended drawing in which;
Fig. 1 is an elevational view, with partial section taken along the line '1 * 1 of FIG. 2, showing the new electro-magnetic pendulum mechanism in contact position.

   Fig. 2 is a side view of FIG. 1 shown in section along line 2-2 of FIG. 1.

   Fig. 3 is a partial view of the upright carrying the spiral spring acting on the axis of the balance, said view being shown looking in the direction of arrows 3-3 of FIG. 2.

   Figs. 4,5 and 6 are detail views showing the successive positions of the leaf spring establishing contact or actuating the pawl of the ratchet with respect to the cam or stop integral with the axis of the balance, acting in both sense on the free end of said blade.

   Fig. 7 is a variant of the contact stop.

   As shown in the drawing, a balanced balance 8 made up of two metal masses, one of which is magnetic, placed at the ends of two opposite equal arms mounted in a socket fixed on an axis 7, the end points of which pivot between two adjustable screws. carried by the braced uprights 9 and 10 (Fig. 2) which support at their lower part an electromagnet 11 connected on the one hand to a terminal 12 provided on one of said uprights and isolated from it, and connected on the other hand to the mass of the pendulum.

   On the axis supporting this balance is fixed a sleeve 13 having a finger, cam or stopper 14 provided to act in both directions, during reciprocating movements of the balance, on the free end of a leaf spring 15 fixed to the end of a support 16 provided for the upright 9. As shown in FIG. 1 and

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 in detail in Figs. 4 to 6, this leaf spring can be pressed alternately under the action of the push of the finger 14, against the contact 17 with the stainless tip of a terminal 18 also fixed to the upright 9, and against the finger 19 of 'an articulated pawl 20 pirated at 21 to said upright 9.

   The pawl 20 acts on the teeth of a ratchet wheel 22, having a stop pawl 22 ', the axis 23 of which is journaled in supports 24 and 25 provided for the aforesaid amount and on which the axis is wedged a helical screw 26 meshing with a toothed wheel 27 mounted on the axis 28 of the timer.

   As shown in Fig. 3, an adjustable spiral spring 29 fixed respectively to the upright 10 and to the axis 7 of the balance 8, then provides with its relaxation the impetus necessary for the return movement of said balance.

   The device operates as follows:
When the leaf spring 15 is brought into the position shown in FIG. 1, 2 and 4, that is to say when it comes into contact with the tip 17 of the terminal 18, as a result of the thrust exerted by the finger 14 on the free end of the said blade, the The electric circuit will then close on the electromagnet 11 and will attract the magnetic mass of the balance 8 during a minimal fraction of its travel in the direction of the arrow x, thus giving the latter the necessary impetus to its movement.

   The momentum acquired by said balance will have the effect of bending the spiral spring 29 (FIGS. 2 and 3) and of bringing the finger or cam 14 integral with the axle 7 of this balance in the position shown in FIG. 5 so as to fully release the leaf spring 15.

   The relaxation of the spiral spring 29 then causing the return of the balance 8 in the direction of arrow y, the stop 14 will exert for a moment a new thrust on the leaf spring 15, which in turn will press on the finger 19 of the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 pawl 20, which under this pressure will move the ratchet wheel
22 of a quantity corresponding to one tooth.

   This slight movement will have the effect of actuating the endless screw 26 integral with the axis 23 of said ratchet wheel, which will then communicate its movement to the toothed wheel 27 set on the axis 28 of the timer.

   The balance will then resume its circumferential movement in the direction of arrow x under the new relaxing action of the spiral spring 29, loaded in the return movement, passing through the point of contact 17, or by closing the circuit. electric, it will receive a new impulse.

   According to the variant shown in FIG. 7, the contact tip 17 of terminal 18 may optionally be replaced by a leaf spring 17 'in order to reduce the resistance produced by the fixed contact and to prevent, by the slight friction produced by its bending, oxidation of contact.

   The apparatus thus established could be connected to any suitable current source, preferably a simple battery, which could be, in view of the small quantity of current absorbed by the electromagnet, of very small size so as to can be easily concealed in the casing of the: pendula.
