 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

   Les postes automatiques A et A' sont semblables l'un à l'autre et chacun comporte les appareils usuels de signal, de conversation et de commande des commutateurs. Les circuits de ligne dans lesquels les lignes de chaque poste se terminent sont tous semblables et chacun d'eux oomporte un relais individuel d'interruption tel que le relais d'interruption 4;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 10>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 11>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 12>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 13>

 62 et 63 un point dans le circuit de sonnerie et de conversa- tion; à l'armature 64, il met à la terre les quatrièmes contacts fixes rencontrés par le frotteur 73 en vue de rendre la ligne du poste A' occupée à l'essai pour d'autres commutateurs et pour exciter complètement le relais d'interruption 84 ; à l'ar- mature 65 il prépare un circuit pour le relais 21; à l'armature 66 il complète un circuit de verrouillage pour lui-même par- tir de la terre de l'armature 47, par son enroulement supérieur;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 14>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 15>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 16>

   Sous l'effet du   fono-   tionnement de l'aimant d'avancement 105, les frotteurs du   cher-   oheur de ligne de jonotion sont déplacés par saccades à la re- cherche de la chaîne de connecteur chercheur appelante., Lors- que le frotteur 103 du chercheur de ligne de jonction TF ren- ; oontre le contact fixe dans lequel se termine le conducteur   83,   un circuit peut être tracé renfermant le relais 14 de la   chaîne   de connecteur chercheur et les relais 107 et 108 dans le cir- cuit de jonotion TC, comme suit: de la terre sur les dixièmes contacts fixes rencontrés par le frotteur 74 du connecteur 0 (figure 1), l'armature 60 l'enroulement inférieur du   relais' 14,   le frotteur 11;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 19>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 21>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 22>

   Par suite de l'intercalation des résistances 155 et 156, le relais d'interruption de sonnerie du oonneoteur de bureau principal n'est pas actionné à ce moment* Sous l'ef- fet du   fonctionnement   du relais   116,   ce relais ferme à   l'arma-   ture 159 un circuit de verrouillage-pour son enroulement infé- rieur , s'étendant à partir du conducteur mis à la terré 180, en passant par l'armature 145; à l'armature   157,  il ouvre son circuit initial d'excitation;

   et à l'armature 158 il ferme un oirouit comme suit pour allumer la lampe de réponse   303:'du   ressort mis à la terre 206 de la olaf de libération RK, par le conducteur 180, l'armature 158, le   conducteur   181, la lampe de réponse 203 le conducteur 261, le contact de repos du res- sort 213 et ce ressort et par l'enroulement du relais 207 vers la batterie;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 24>

   à   l'armature   253 un court- circuit normalement fermé autour   dû   relais de libération 228 et ferme également un circuit d'excitation pour le relais 228 qui peut être tracé comme suit : la terre par l'armature 253, l'enroulement du relais de libération 228, les ressorts nor- malement fermés commandés par l'armature 234, le conducteur   175,   l'armature 124 et l'enroulement du relais 105 vers la bat   terie.   Ce   dernier   oirouit n'est pas complété à ce moment parce qu'à ce moment le relais 106 n'est pas excité;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 26>

 134 avec le conducteur 171 et il ferme également un circuit de dérivation autour des résistances 155 et 156 en vue d'action- ner le relais d'interruption de sonnerie dans le connecteur pour couper la sonnerie; à l'armature 161 il ferme un circuit de retenue pour le relais 114 indépendamment de l'armature 156; à l'armature 162 il complète un circuit à interruption automa- tique pour l'aimant 105 en vue de ramener le chercheur de ligne de jonction TF dans sa position normale ou de rappel ;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 27>

   l'aimant d'avancement 105 n'est pas   excitée   Le re- lais 106 prépare aux armatures 118 et II9 un circuit pour son ner l'abonné appelé ; à l'armature 120 il relie le conducteur   d'essai   commun 176 au frotteur 102; à l'armature I2I il   com-   plète un circuit de verrouillage pour lui-même vers le con-   ducteur   de oommande de réponse mis à la terre 173; à l'arma- ture 122, il prépare un circuit pour le relais de mise en oir ouit 109;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 28>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 29>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 30>

   Dans le circuit de ligne de jonction TC, figure 2, le relais de commutation 109 est excité par le circuit suivant : de la terre à l'armature 235 par le conducteur commun de mise en circuit 174, l'armature 122.et l'enroulement du relais de mise en circuit 109 vers la batterie. En s'excitant, le relais 109 prépare aux armatures 127 et 128 un point dans le circuit de conversation; à l'armature 129 il prépare un point dans le circuit pour mettre à là terre le frotteur d'essai 102 après que le relais 106 retombe; à l'armature 130 il établit le ver- rouillage aveo le conducteur local de libération 183 mis à la terre;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 31>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 32>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 33>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 34>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 35>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 36>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 37>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 38>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 40>

 'nuit et le préposé préparera par conséquent cette ligne pour le service de nuit avant de quitter son poste.

 <Desc/Clms Page number 41>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 42>

  Improvements to automatic telephone systems
The present invention relates to automatic telephone systems in general, but more particularly to small systems of this type usually called private automatic offices. These systems are generally the private property of individuals or companies and are installed in Elders or other establishments to provide a

 local service between a small number of local telephone lines and for establishing communications through trunk circuits to the main office of the telephone administration network.

   The object of the present invention is to provide a means of employing a minimum number of switching devices at the branch office to complete the desired telephone connections, and to enable the equipment of such offices to be set up at very low cost. costs while retaining all the features necessary for a modern, first-class and secure telephone service.

   One of the features of the invention relates to the improved circuit arrangements of a chain circuit comprising a digital forward selector switch for establishing a connection with a called line and a non-digital line reohefohe switch. to find the calling line.

   Another feature relates to the looping arrangements of an improved trunk finder which allows the trunk finder to be employed as a finder switch for outgoing calls and as a directly controlled connector for incoming calls.

   Another feature is a group of common control relays, which are common to more than one trunk finder and which control the trunk finders to complete communication to the desired local subscriber line.

   Other features involving trunk line call monitoring and night service are mainly fine tuning details and will be explained hereinafter along with those mentioned above, with the aid of the accompanying drawings. which include figures 1 to 3 inclusive and which show, by means of usual circuit diagrams

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 what it is necessary to represent of the apparatus employed in the systems embodying the characteristics of the invention in order to allow the understanding of what it is.

   Figure 1 of the drawings shows schematically two automatic stations A and A with their individual interrupt relays and a common line relay which is common to all subscriber lines and a connector chain circuit oheroheur. The line circuit of each subscriber line ends in the rows of fixed contacts of finders such as finder F, and in the rows of fixed oon tacts of connectors such as connector 0. Near the bottom of Figure 1, in the dotted rectangle, the individual interrupt relay has been shown for the attendant station which is shown in FIG. 3.

   Figure 2 shows schematically a two-way TC junction line, coming from a remote automatic office and ending, at the local office, in the TF junction line finder, the rows of fixed contacts of the latter being connected in multiple with rows of fixed oontaots connectors such as 0, figure 1. Relay 186, near the bottom of figure 2, is a relay which is common to trunk seekers such as TF, and which controls oonduo- starters to the trunk searchers as will be explained in the following. In order not to overcomplicate the drawings, only a jonotion line oircuit and a rush line oheroheur have been shown. tion.

   In the case of two or more junction circuits, the output conductor such as conductor 177 will have to extend through the second junction circuit and terminate therein in an armature spring similar to the spring of 'armature 154. As shown in the drawing, the finder-start conductor terminates in terminal 194

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 and is connected by jumper 195 to terminal 193. Jumper 195 is shown in this way to denote the start circuit extending through two or more trunk circuits back to terminal 193 which is connected to common relay 186.

   In OTR in FIG. 3, the common junction relays which are common to trunk line seekers such as TF, and which are controlled by an agent during calls arriving via the trunk circuits - such as TC , to directly control the operation of trunk searchers such as TF, to establish the connection with the desired called line and to operate the ringing in it. Leads 172, 174, 175, and 176 are common leads extending to all trunk line seekers, while response control lead 173 is unique to a particular trunk line finder.

   A similar response control conductor 173 is provided for another trunking line finder and is shown schematically directly above relay 224. The remainder of the apparatus shown in Figure 3 is located in the cabinet. of the attendant. The response lamp 203, the monitoring lamp 204, the RK release key, the key. AK answer key and the night key NK are individually specific to the TC junction circuit shown in figure 2. Similar answer and surveillance lamps as well as release and answer keys are provided on the attendant's desk for other junction circuits. Relay 207 is a relay common to all the keys to control the shaker 222 to warn the attendant.

   Near the bottom of the figure, there is shown a group of conductors which extend through the keys associated with the second junction circuit. Terminals 290 and 292 and the jumper schematically show how the shaker connecting conductor 268. Is bundled.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 through the various keys, of junction line to oom .. command the circuit of the trembeleur 222. At the extreme right of FIG. 3, the telephone of the attendant's station is shown which is supposed to be of the handle type. Springs 20I and 202 are shown in the normal position with the handle resting in the cradle. The usual receiver and transmitter as well as the call device CD are shown schematically in the usual way.

   LK shows the line key by means of which the agent can call or be called in the same way as a local telephone line. Represented at 282 is the ringing of the agent by means of which the agent is notified when called as a local subscriber. The attendant's cabinet consists of a flat-top cabinet on which the hand station and the various lamps and keys are mounted.

   The automatic stations A and A 'are similar to each other and each comprises the usual signal, conversation and switch control apparatus. The line circuits in which the lines of each station terminate are all similar and each of them has an individual interrupt relay such as interrupt relay 4;
The mechanism of researchers such as F and -TF and connectors such as 0 is of the well-known rotary type usually used for line rotary switches, the rubbers of these devices moving only in the forward direction. and remaining in the last used position.

   The circuit details of oonotor C are somewhat different from researchers in that an out-of-normal pair of springs is provided to return the oonotor to its normal or return position after each power-up. munication. The junction line finders are also equipped with springs out of normal, the purpose of which is to force the junction line finders to return to their positions.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 normal before they are actuated directly as connectors to complete a connection to a called line.

  In Figures 1 and 2 wherever conductors end with reference symbols enclosed in a circle, this means that these conductors must be connected to conductors marked in an analogous manner.

   The illustrated embodiment of the invention is a system having a maximum capacity of nine looal telephone lines and two trunk lines, although only one trunk line has been shown. The equipment required for this office will include two strings of searcher connectors as shown in Figure 1 and two trunking line searchers and junction circuits as shown in Figure 2. With this equipment .slowly, it is possible to establish two local connections and two trunk connections at the same time, it being understood that the capacity of searchers and connectors could be easily increased for a greater number of lines if this was necessary. - sary.

   In this case, the researchers and connectors would likely be 25 point switches and have access to 24 local lines. In the event that the capacity is increased, it would probably be necessary to increase the number of strings of connector researchers.

   After a brief description of the equipment included in such a system, a detailed description of the operation will be given. It will be assumed for this purpose that the subscriber A wishes to obtain the communication with the subscriber A '. When the subscriber of station A removes his receiver to start a call, a circuit is completed for the common line relay. LR and the interrupt relay 4, as follows: / earth through the winding of the LR relay, conductor 3, armature 7, through the loop of the calling station, armature-5 and through the winding / upper of the 4 'interrupt relay to the battery.

   The re-

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

 The interrupting line 4 is set such that when the circuit is closed by its upper winding only, the armature 6 is the only armature which is actuated. Interrupting relay 4 can therefore be considered as a two-phase relay in the sense that it only actuates its armature 6 when in its first phase and that it activates its armatures 5 and 7 during its second. phase when an oir-cuit is closed for its lower winding. Interrupt relay 4 therefore actuates its armature 6 in its first phase and prepares a circuit for its lower winding, which circuit is closed when the seeker finds the calling line.

   The LR common line relay is actuated through the circuit traced above and closes a circuit for the finder start relay 15 as follows: earth through armature 41, armature 36 and its normally closed contact and winding the finder start relay 15 to the battery. Relay 15 closes, by energizing, at armature 33 a circuit for energizing differential relay 12 and at armature 34 it prepares a test circuit to stop the seeker on the calling line. The differential relay 12 closes, by being energized, at the armature 25 ... an automatically interrupting circuit for the advancing magnet 23. The magnet 23 interrupts its own circuit and causes the wipers 8, 9 to advance. , 10 and 11 looking for the calling line.

   When the wiper 10 meets the fixed contacts in which the conductor 88 terminates, this wiper encounters a battery potential which extends through the lower winding of the interrupting relay 4 and the resistor R in parallel to energize the lower winding differential relay 12 and to energize relay 13. The relay 12 being with differential winding immediately de-energizes and opens to armature 25 the feed circuit of magnet 23, which stops the rubbers. of the searcher on the line of subscriber / caller A.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

 relay 13 closes, by energizing at armature 26, a circuit to energize relay 16.

   A circuit is also closed from ground to armature 26 for the advancing magnet 24, but as a result of the high resistance 44, the advancing magnet 24 is not actuated. Relay 16 opens, by energizing, at armature 36, the starting circuit for slow-action relay 15 at its normally closed contact, and at its working contact it transfers the starter conductor. through conductor 80 to the next connector finder string.

   The starter relay, like relay 15 in the next finder chain, is also a slow to energize and slow to release relay and therefore this relay does not fully energize to turn on. the next seeker because the common line relay LR de-energizes and opens the circuit of that relay before it can actuate its armature. Underwire
37 and 38, relay 16 closes a point in the two talk conductors and also closes a circuit for line relay 17.

   At armature 39, relay 16 connects earth to test wiper 10 which extends by means of conductor 88 and armature 6 towards the lower winding of interrupting relay 4, which energizes the interrupting relay completely in its second phase to cut the circuit of the common line relay LE which then de-energizes. At armature 39 the air-cooked by the upper winding of the differential relay 12 is open and at the opening contact of the armature 39 the lower winding of the differential relay 12 and the relay winding
13 are temporarily short-circuited. This short-circuit prevents re-use of the differential relay 12 and forces the relay 13 to de-energize and to open the initial switch-on circuit of the relay 16.

   In armature 40, relay 16 closes a temporary latching circuit for itself extending through armature 35. Relay 15, being slow to de-energize and also slow to produce its pull, maintains his

 <Desc / Clms Page number 9>

 armature 35 in the actuated position for a short period of time or long enough to allow line relay 17 and release relay 18 to activate to keep relay 16 latched in the actuated position.

   The circuit for energizing the line relay 17 can be traced as follows: earth by means of the lower winding of the relay 17,1 'armature 38, armature 28, line contactor 9, conductor 2, bouole calling station A, the oonduoteur 1, the line wiper 8, the armature 27, the armature 37 and by the upper winding of the relay 17 towards the battery.

  Line relay 17 opens, by energizing, at armature 42 the normal short circuit around relay 18 and also closes an excitation circuit for relay 18 as follows: earth by means of the armature 42, the coil of the release relay 18, the armature 68 and the coil of the stepping magnet 24 towards the battery. The feed-forward magnet 24 does not energize in this circuit due to the high resistance of relay 18. At armature 43, line relay 17 opens a point in the circuit of slow-acting relay 19. .

   The release relay 18 prepares, by being energized, at the armature 45 a circuit for the switching relay 22; at armature 46 it prepares a circuit for relay 19; at armature 47 it also prepares a circuit for relay 19 and latching circuits for relays 20 and 21; at armature 48 it prepares another point in the circuit for relay 19, and at armature 49 and its working contact it completes the latch circuit for relay 16 before slow-acting relay 15 has had time to de-excite.

   It should be noted that as soon as the relay 16 is energized, the calling subscriber receives the dial operation sound through the following circuit: the dial operation sound conductor DT, through the rest contact of the armature 61 and this frame,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 10>

 the armature 67, the capacitor c, the armature 38 and from there by the calling bubble oomme described previously. When the calling subscriber A hears the dial operation sound, he can dial the line number of the desired subscriber on the dial; in the present case, since the desired called subscriber is A ', the subscriber dials the number 4.

   Under the effect of the operation of the call device CD at station A, the circuit of the line relay 17 is interrupted several times and this relay de-activates and therefore exits a corresponding number of times. Each time the line relay 17 de-energizes, a circuit can be drawn as follows to energize the slow-acting relay 19 and the jerky feed magnet 24: earth through armature 47, armature 59 and its rest contact, armature 46, armature 43, through armature 48 to slow-acting relay 19 and to the battery; another path extends through the frame 46 and thence through the normally closed springs controlled by the frame 42, the frame 68 and the winding of the stepping magnet 24, to the battery .

   To the normally closed springs controlled by the armature 42, the relay 18 is short-circuited which makes this relay slow to release. By the operation of the gradually advancing magnet 24, the wipers of the connector 0 are set in jerky rotation until they come to rest in engagement with the fourth series of fixed contacts or in this case in engagement with the fixed contacts in which the line of set A 'ends.

   The slow-acting relay 19 opens, by tapping, on the armature 51, a point in the circuit of the switching relay 22 so that the relay 22 does not activate while the test wiper 73 passes. on free contacts; at armature 52, it places another earth on the pulse circuit in the event that relay 21 is energized while test wiper 73 passes over earthed contacts. Owing to its slow release characteristics, relay 19 maintains

 <Desc / Clms Page number 11>

 keeps its frames powered during the pulse period.

  The springs out of normal 70 close under the effect of the first advance of the wipers and provide additional retaining earth for the relay 16 while preparing a circuit to return the connector wipers to normal after the release. conversation.

   Further operation now depends on whether the line at set A 'is free or busy.

  In the event that the line from station A 'is busy in another @ communication, earth is present on the fixed contacts encountered by the test walker 73 and a circuit is closed as follows for the occupancy relay 21: the earth by the wiper 73, the armature 29, the armature 51 and its working contact, the rest contact of the armature 65 and this armature and the winding of the occupancy relay 21 towards the battery.

   The relay 21 opens, by being excited, at the armature 57, a point in the circuit of the relay 20; at armature 58 it opens a point in the circuit of switching relay 22; at armature 59 it prepares a locking circuit for itself which will be closed as soon as the slow-action relay 19 de-energizes, and at armature 61 it substitutes the busy sound coming from the driver BT to the dial operation sound, after which the calling subscriber receives the busy sound through the circuit previously traced to give the subscriber the dial operation sound.

   A short interval after this the slow motion relay 19 de-energizes and at the normally closed springs controlled by armature 51 it completes the latch circuit for occupancy relay 21 as follows: earth through armature 47 , the armature 59 and its working contact, the normally closed springs commanded by the armature 51, the armature 65 and the winding of the occupancy relay 21, towards the battery.

   When the calling subscriber hears the well-known busy sound, he hangs up his receiver, which opens the circuit

 <Desc / Clms Page number 12>

 line relay 17. By de-operating, line relay 17 places, with the normally firm springs controlled by frame 42, a short-circuit around release relay 18, after which the latter relay is released at the end. of an interval.

  Relay 18 opens, by de-energizing, at armature 47 the locking circuit of occupancy relay 21, after which the latter relay de-energizes. At armature 49, relay 18 completes a circuit as follows for the advancing magnet 24: the earth, by the springs outside normal 70, the armature 49 and its rest contact, the switch springs of the advancing magnet 24, the armature 68 and the winding of the magnet 24, towards the battery. The advancing magnet 24 energizes by this circuit and interrupts its own circuit to advance the wipers of the connector switch C to the Normal position or until the springs out of normal 70 open, oe which opens the circuit of the love 24.

   As soon as the springs outside normal 70 open, the locking circuit of relay 16 is also open and this relay de-energizes. All devices in the connector finder chain are now in the normal position and can be used to complete other calls.

   .We will now assume that the line of station A 'is free when the trotters of connector 0 are brought in with oelle-oi. In this case, the occupancy relay 21 is not actuated and when the slow-acting relay 19 de-energizes an oirouit can be traced as follows to energize the switching relay 22: earth through the lower winding of the switching relay 22, armature 58, armature 45, the rest contact of armature 51 and this armature, armature 29, ie test wiper 73, the fourth fixed contact accessible for the wiper 73, the conductor 77 and by the lower winding of the interruption relay '84 towards the battery.

   The oommutation relay 22, in exciting prepares for the reinforcements

 <Desc / Clms Page number 13>

 62 and 63 a point in the ringing and conversation circuit; at armature 64, it grounds the fourth fixed contacts encountered by the wiper 73 in order to make the line of station A 'busy for testing for other switches and to fully energize the interrupt relay 84 ; in frame 65 it prepares a circuit for relay 21; at armature 66 it completes a locking circuit for itself starting from the earth of armature 47, by its upper winding;

   at armature 67, it disconnects the dial sound and operating sound conductors and at armature 68 it opens a point in the circuit of the advancing magnet 24 to prevent subsequent advancement of this magnet. : The interrupt relay 84 is energized by the above circuit and in the armatures 85 and 87 it disconnects itself and disconnects the common line lead LE from the line conductors 81 and 8, At the armature 86 a circuit is closed to ground the conductor 76 which terminates in the fixed contacts of the researcher. This circuit can be followed from armature 86 by trotter 73, armature 29, armature 64 and its working contact, to earth.

   As the subscriber calling A does not hear the ringing tone, he rings by means of the oadran the subscriber called A '. In order to ring the called subscriber, subscriber A activates his calling device in accordance with the ringing number of the dial, @ which may be the number 2 or the number 8. 'In the case where the - calling subscriber uses digit 2 to ring the called line, the ringing of the called subscriber's line rings for a short interval only while if digit 8 has been used the ringing of the called line rings for a short time. longer determined period of time.

   We see that this way, it is possible to have two participants on the same line and that they can receive the signal by / impurity codes.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 14>

 short ring or long ring. However, in the present case, since only a single subscriber has been shown with a telephone line, it is irrelevant which of the digits is used to ring the called line from the dial. Under the effect of the operation of the calling device, the line relay 17 is again actuated intermittently and again causes the energization of the slow-acting relay 19.

   The slow-acting relay, when energized, completes at armature 50 a circuit for occupancy relay 21 which is now used as a bell relay. The circuit to energize the relay 21 can be traced as follows: the earth by the armature 50, the armature 55, the working contact of the armature 65 and this armature and the winding of the relay 21 towards the battery . When energized, the relay 21 completes in the frame 57 a circuit for ringing the subscriber called A 'as follows: from the conductor of the generator GEN through the working contact of the armature 57 and this armature, the armature 53, armature 62, wiper 71, conductor 81, by ringing the called line and return to conductor 82, wiper 72, armature 63 and armature 54 and its rest contact towards the earth.

   A short interval after the dial pulses cease, the slow-acting relay 19 de-energizes and opens the circuit of relay 21, after which the latter relay de-energizes as well. In the event that the called subscriber does not answer immediately, the calling subscriber can ring the called line again on the dial and make the ringing of the called station work again.

   When the subscriber called A 'answers by removing his receiver during a period without ringing or a period of silence, a circuit can be traced as follows to energize relay 20: from the earth via the rest contact of the armament. ture 54 and this armature, by the circuit drawn previously, however now enclosing the transmitter and the receiver

 <Desc / Clms Page number 15>

   . in bridge of the line and enclosing the armature 57 and its oon .. tact behind, by the lower winding du'relais 20 towards the battery.

   By being excited by the circuit indicated above, the relay 20 completes the armatures 53 and 54 the conversation oirouit; at armature 55 it opens a point in the circuit of relay 21 so that other pulses do not actuate relay 21, and at armature 56 it completes a locking circuit for itself. extending through the 47 earthed armature. The calling subscriber A and the called subscriber A 'are now connected and can converse by means of the conversation conducers which are shown in solid lines. The two subscribers receive their conversation battery from the windings of the line relay 17.

   After the conversation and when the two subscribers replace their receivers, relay 17 de-energizes and again causes de-operation of manohon relay 18. Relay 18, by de-energizing, opens the relay locking circuit. 20 and 22 to the armature 47 and also closes the local circuit to the armature 49 in order to return the friction contacts of the connector switch to their normal positions. Release of the connector seeker chain is accomplished in the same manner as previously described. All the equipment is then in the normal position and is made available for other calls.

   After having described in detail how a local call is completed, a detailed description will be given of the operation which occurs when a local subscriber calls a subscriber of the main office. To make outgoing calls to the main office, the local subscriber must first dial the number "0" as a prefix before dialing the ordinary telephone number of the subscriber's line at the main office on the dial.

   For convenience, we will assume that subscriber A

 <Desc / Clms Page number 16>

 Desires to complete a communication with a subscriber line of the main office, and under the effect of the removal of the receiver at station A the common line relay LR and the interrupt relay 4 operate in the same way as described previously to force a seeker to find the calling line. Assuming that finder F in Figure 1 is the finder / employ and the finder rubbers rest on the line at station A, the finder immediately establishes the connection in the manner previously described.

  As a result of the subscriber A forming the number "0" on the dial, the connector C is actuated in the same manner as described above to bring the wipers onto the tenth series of fixed contacts. When then relay 19 drops a little after the pulsing has ceased, a circuit can be drawn to energize switching relay 22 and start relay 110 (figure 2) in series, as follows:

     earth through the lower winding of the switching relay 22, the armature 58, the armature 45, the rest contact of the armature 51 and this armature, the armature 29, the wiper 73, the di - xth fixed contact, the conductor 75, the normally closed springs controlled by the armature 188 in the starter conductor 178, the armature 154 and its rest contact, the armature 135 and its rest contact and the winding of the starter relay 110 towards the battery. The switching relay 22 energizes and energizes its armatures in the same manner as described previously.

   In the TC junction box, FIG. 2, the slow relay 110 to be excited closes, by being excited, to the armature 136 an air box to drive the differential relay 107; to armature 138 it grounds the night service control conductor 179 and prepares a temporary latching circuit for the connection relay 109, and $ armature 139 it prepares a test circuit for stop jonb line finder- He he

105 of the TF trunk line finder.

   Under the effect of the operation of the advancing magnet 105, the rubbers of the connecting line finder are jerked in search of the calling seeker connector chain. 103 of the TF trunk line finder ren-; Against the fixed contact in which the conductor 83 terminates, a circuit can be drawn containing the relay 14 of the finder connector chain and the relays 107 and 108 in the TC junction circuit, as follows: earth on the tenth fixed contacts encountered by the wiper 74 of the connector 0 (FIG. 1), the armature 60 the lower winding of the relay '14, the wiper 11;

   the conductor 83, the fifth fixed contact encountered by the test wiper 103, the armature 139, the normally closed springs controlled by the armature 131, the lower winding of the differential relay 107 and by the winding - ment of relay 108 to the battery. The relay 107 being set 'in a different way, immediately releases its armature 125 and stops the rubbers of the junction line finder on the fixed contacts encountered or, in this case, on the fixed contact in which the line of station A ends. . In. using the circuit traced above, the relay 108 closes the armature 126 a circuit to excite the relay 109.

   By energizing, the relay 109 completes the armatures 127 and 128 a point in the conversation channel and also completes a circuit to energize the relay 111. At the armature 129 the relay 109 opens the channel passing through the channel. upper winding of the differential relay at its rear contact, and at 604 () front contact it connects the earth via the wiper

102 to the driver 89 to keep the line of station A busy for other switches which have access to it.

   At armature 130, relay 109 completes a latch circuit for itself, extending from earthed armature 138; at the armature 131 it opens the circuit extending through the lower bearing of the differential relay 107 while maintaining the oirouit for the relay 108; at armature 132 it opens a point in the circuit for the advancing magnet 105, and at armature 135 it opens the circuit of the slow-acting start relay 110, at its break contact, and at its contact working, it transfers the starter conductor to the next junction or to the common relay 186 in the event that the second junction oor is in use.

   The circuit to energize the .relay 111 can be traced as follows: from the earth by the normally closed springs controlled by the armature 146, the armature 128, the rest contact of the armature 119 and this armature, the 'brush 101, the conductor 2, by the loop of the station
A, driver 1, slider 100, frame 118 and its rest contact, frame 127, relay $ 11, driver 170 and to the battery at the main office. By energizing by means of the circuit indicated above, the relay 111 completes the armature 140 with a circuit for energizing the release relay 112.

   By energizing, the relay 112 opens to the armature 141 a point in the circuits of the relays 115 and 116; at armature 142, it completes a circuit to energize slow-acting relay 113 and at armature 143 it completes a latch circuit for relay 109 before slow-acting relay 110 has had time to drop.

   The circuit for energizing relay 113 can be traced as follows: from earth to the main office by conductor 171, the normally closed springs controlled by armature 147, armature 142 and the winding of relay 113 to the battery. energizing by means of the circuit indicated above, the relay 113 prepares for the armature 146 a point in the

 conversation circuit and at frame 147 it completes an interlocking blackout for itself regardless of ground coming from the main office
Referring again to Figure 1, when relay 14 has been energized by the oherohour of your trunk line found the finder connector string,

   the relay 14 opens to the armatures 27 and 28 the circuit of the line relay 17. At the armature 29 it places the resistor 32 in a hole to ensure the complete functioning of the relay 108, and to the armature 31 it completes a locking circuit for itself from the earthed armature 40.

   Line relay 17, when de-energizing, short-circuits release relay 18 to the normally closed springs controlled by frame 42, after which relay 18 releases and opens the circuit. locking relay 22 and closed the local feed lever for magnet 24 in order to return the wipers of connector C to their normal positions as described above. When the sliders of connector C have returned to their normal position, the out of normal springs 70 open the latch circuit of relay 16, after which relay 16 and then relay 14 de-energize to make the local chain of Seeker engine available for use for other calls.

   When the line from set A is connected to the main office. pal by the operation of relay 113, figure 2, the line switch propDe individually to this connection line to the main office searches for a first free selector and establishes the connection with this first free selector from where the sound, of oadran maneuver is transmitted back through the junction line in the well-known manner.

   As soon as subscriber A hears the dial operation sound, he dials the main office subscriber's telephone number on the dial, and the main office automatic switches operate under the effect of-

   This maneuver and complete the communication to the desired line, The conversation battery is supplied from the connector of the main office to both the P.A.

  X, and for the main office subscriber.

   After the conversation and as a result of the main office subscriber hanging up his receiver, the main office connector one, which is the last participant release connector, is prepared for release. When subscriber A replaces his receiver, the circuit of relay 111 is opened after which this relay de-energizes and opens at armature 140 the circuit of release relay 112. Relay 112 opens, by de-energizing, at the armature 142 the circuit of the slow relay to be released 113 and at the armature 143 it opens the circuit of the relay 109.

   Relay 109 opens when de-energizing, at armatures 127 and 128, a point in the conversation circuit; at the armature 129 it removes the earth from the test wiper 102 and from the conductor 89; at armature 132 it prepares a circuit for magnet 105, and at armature 135, it restores the starting circuit for relay 110. TC junction circuit and TF junction line finder are now in the line. normal position, it being understood, however, that the wipers of the TF junction line finder remain in engagement with the fixed contacts of the line last used and do not return to their normal positions at this time. The TF trunk line oheroheur and TC trunk circuit can then be used to complete other communications.

   After having deorit the detailed operation which occurs when there is a free junction line ohher and a free junction circuit, we will now give the description of the operation which occurs in the case where all the junction line cohorts. jonotion and junction circuits are broken when trying to establish communication

 <Desc / Clms Page number 21>

 to main office It will now be assumed that subscriber A is trying to make an outgoing call when all trunk circuits and trunk searchers are activated.

   In this case, the finder scope F and the connector 0 are actuated in the same manner as described above by removing the receiver and forming the number "O" on the dial. , In this oas' as all trunking line finders and trunking circuits are cut off, a circuit can be traced to energize relay 22 of oon- nector 0 and common relay 186 (figure 2) in series when relay slow-acting 19 de-energizes after cessation of pulses.

   This circuit can be traced as follows: earth through the lower winding of the switching relay 22, the armature 58, the armature 45, the armature 51, the armature 39, the wiper 73, the conductor 75, normally closed exits controlled by armature 188, armature 154 and its normally closed contact in the event that the junction circuit is busy in an outgoing call to the main office or by armature 154 and its work contact in the event that the jonotion oirouit is busy in an incoming call, the armature 135 - and its work contact, the outgoing starter conductor 177, terminal 194,

     by jumper 195 indicating a chain circuit similar to armatures 154 and 135 to the second junction ring to terminal 193, and by the winding of relay 186 to the battery. Relay 22 operates in the same manner as described previously and to armature 64 it connects earth to conductor 75 to fully operate relay 186. Relay 186 is a slow-to-run relay. energize and when a circuit is closed by this in series with the lower winding of switching relay 22, relay 186 energizes only enough to cause oontaots "X" to close at armature 190 .

   Under the effect

 <Desc / Clms Page number 22>

 from the closing of the oontaots "X" to the armature 190, the earth by the resistor 191 is extended by means of the resting contact of the armature 189 and this armature, by the conductor 167 up to the tenth fixed contact encountered by the trotter 71 of the oonneoteur 0 and then by the armature 62, the armature 53 and its rest contact, the armature 57 and its rest contact and - by the lower winding of the relay 20 towards the battery.

  The -relay 20, by energizing by means of the circuit traced oi-above, oomplete to the armature 56 a locking circuit for itself by means of the armature 47 earthed; at the armature 53 it prepares a circuit for transmitting the busy sound to the calling subscriber.

   When the direote earth is connected to the conductor 75 by the operation of the manohon relay 22, the relay 186 (figure 2) slowly draws its armature and to the armature 188 it completes a locking circuit for itself and to the armature 189 and on its working contact it opens the initial excitation oirouit of relay 20 and connects the busy sound by means of the oupation sound conductorB, of the armature 189, of the conductor 167 to the slider 71 to its working contact The oirouit of its ooooupation can be followed by the slider 71 by the reversing conductor in strong line up to the calling point and return to earth and to the lower winding of the line relay 17, If several other local subscribers try to make an outgoing call at this time,

   connector 0 operates in the same way as when a communication is completed to an interrupted local line, due to earth on conductor 75. Following reception of the busy sound, the calling subscriber replaces his receptor and therefore releases the connector seeker chain in the well known manner.

   When the sliders of connector C are rotated leaving the tenth set of fixed contacts, the earth is removed from the inverter 75 and / the relay 186

Having defined the detailed operation which occurs when a local subscriber calls a subscriber of the main office, we will now give the detailed description of the operation which occurs when a subscriber of the main office wishes to be connected to a local subscriber of the main office. P.AX.

   When the connoisseur of the main office acting as a result of the subscriber of the main office dialing the number of the private automatic office, takes up a connection line, for example conductors 170 and 171, a circuit is completed. for the AC relay designated by 116 during the ringing period and for the relay 115 during the silence period. Oirouit to energize relay 1 @ C. denoted by 116 is closed from the generator to the main office oonneotor by the conductor 170, the armature 141 the winding of the relay 115 and the resistors 155 and 156 to the conductor 171.

   As a result of the intercalation of resistors 155 and 156, the bell interrupt relay of the main office motor is not actuated at this time * Due to the operation of relay 116, this relay closes at this time. armature 159 a latch-circuit for its lower winding, extending from grounded conductor 180 through armature 145; at armature 157, it opens its initial excitation circuit;

   and at armature 158 it closes an oirouit as follows to turn on the response lamp 303: 'from the grounded spring 206 of the release olaf RK, through the conductor 180, the armature 158, the conductor 181, the response lamp 203 the conductor 261, the rest contact of the spring 213 and this spring and by the winding of the relay 207 towards the battery;

   The relay 207 is energized by the circuit traced above and at the armature 208 it completes a circuit to operate the shaker relay 222 as follows; the earth by the

 spring 219 and its rest contact, the conductor 265 which is set in motion by springs similar to the set of springs 219 in the response claf specific to the second jonotion circuit, terminal 292, jumper 291, denoting the oirouit de oha & ne by the various junction keys, terminal 290, conductor 268, interrupting spring 223 of the shaker 222, the winding of the shaker 222 and the armature 208 towards the battery.

   The relay 115, by being said by the circuit traced above, closes to the armature 156 a circuit to energize the relay 114. By energizing itself, the relay 114 completes to the armature 149 a new bridge between the junction circuit independently of the I4I armature; at armature 150 it closes an oirouit to energize relay 113; at armature 151 it opens the short circuit around the lower winding of relay II2; at armature 152 it prepares a locking oirouit for relay 109; at armature 153 it prepares an excitation circuit for relay 117, and at arruature 154 it connects the starting conductor 178 of junction line finder to the next junction line finder or common relay 186 .

   The relay 113, by energizing, connects the lower conversation conductor to the armature 146 and to the armature 147 it prepares a locking circuit for itself.

   When the attendant hears the shaker signal and notices the on state of the response lamp 203, he first removes his hand-held device from its cradle which activates the cradle springs 201 and 202, and then actuates the key. AK response associated with the TC junction circuit.

   Closing cradle springs 202 closes a circuit to energize line relay 230 as follows: earth by means of the lower coil of relay 230, conductor 270, spring break contact 280 and this spring , the driver 278, the he

 <Desc / Clms Page number 25>

 pulse springs of the calling device CD, the transmitter, the receiver, the spring assembly 202, the conductor 279, the spring 281 and its normally closed contact, the conductor 261 and by the upper coil of the relay 230 to the batteries Relay 230 opens, by being excited,

   armature 253 a normally closed short circuit around the release relay 228 and also closes an excitation circuit for relay 228 which can be traced as follows: earth through armature 253, relay winding release 228, the normally closed springs controlled by the armature 234, the conductor 175, the armature 124 and the winding of the relay 105 to the battery. This last oirouit is not completed at this moment because at this moment the relay 106 is not energized;

   As a result of the operation of the AK response olaf, the spring assembly 216 substitutes the earth for the spring 201 of the hand station in the earth for the springs 205 of the release key RK; spring assembly 217 grounds conductor 267 and response control conductor 173 to energize relay 117 in the junction circuit; TC; to the set of springs 218 it connects the conductors 260 and 261 together, independently of the night olaf NK; at the spring assembly 219 it opens the shaker circuit at the rear contact, and at its working contact it closes a circuit to energize the slow relay 229; to the sets of springs 220 and 221 it connects the conversation conductors 184 and 185 to the conversation conductors 272 and 273.

   The circuit for energizing the relay 117 can be traced as follows: from the earth by the working contact of the spring 201, the working contact of the spring 217 and this spring, the conductor 267, the armature 231, the response control conductor 173, armature 153 and through the lower winding of relay 117 to the battery.

   When energized, relay 117 connects the conversation conductor to armature 160

 <Desc / Clms Page number 26>

 134 with conductor 171 and also closes a branch circuit around resistors 155 and 156 to actuate the bell interrupt relay in the connector to cut the bell; at armature 161 it closes a retainer circuit for relay 114 independently of armature 156; at the armature 162 it completes an automatic interrupt circuit for the magnet 105 in order to bring the junction line finder TF back to its normal or return position;

   at armature 163 it completes a latch circuit for itself by its top winding to the grounded disconnect conductor 180, and at armature 165 it prepares a circuit to turn on monitor lamp 204. A short time after relay 117 is fully actuated the slow-to-energize relay 229, in the CTR trunk line relay common group, is energized. The delay in energizing relay 229 is made such that it prevents unnecessary clicking in the receiver circuit, At armature 250, relay 229 prepares a circuit for latch relays 224 and 225 and at armatures 251 and 252 it closes the conversation circuit to the attendant's set.

   The circuit for returning the TF trunking line oheroheur to its return position can be traced as follows: from the grounded response control conductor 173, through armature 162, armature 144, armature 123, armature 132, springs out of normal 104, switch springs from magnet 105 and through magnet 105 to the battery. Magnet 105 operates intermittently in the circuit traced above and returns its trotters to the return position; at this time the springs outside normal 104 open.

   Note that the upper winding of relay 106 is normally shorted as long as the out-of-normal springs 104 remain closed, but as soon as the out-of-normal springs.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 27>

104 normal / open, an oirouit can be traced from the grounded response control motor oon 173 through part of the oirouit previously traced to the frame 123, from where it extends towards the frame. upper winding of relay 106 and by the switch springs of the magnet 105 and the winding of the magnet 105 towards the battery, * The relay 106 is energized by this oirouit but due to the high resistance of the relay 106,

   the advancement magnet 105 is not energized. The relay 106 prepares the armatures 118 and II9 a circuit for its ner the called subscriber; to the frame 120 it connects the common test conductor 176 to the wiper 102; at armature I2I it completes a latch circuit for itself to the grounded response control conductor 173; on armature 122, it prepares a circuit for the output relay 109;

   at armature 123 it opens a point in the circuit for its upper winding while opening the circuit to return the junction line finder to its return position, 'and at armature 124 it completes the circuit for the relay of release 228 into the trunk line relay common group as it prepares the pulse circuit for trunk line finder magnet 105.

  Magnet 105 is not energized in series with relay 228 due to the high resistance of relay 228. The relay.

  228 in the common trunk line relay group prepares, by energizing, at armature 245, the pulse circuit through the common pulse conductor 176; at armature 246 it prepares a test oirouit which contains the switching relay 225, and at armature 247 it prepares a locking oirouit for relays 224 and 225.

   The agent then asks the subscriber of the main office for the number of the desired subscriber line.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 28>

 therefore its CD call device matches the line number of set A.

   In the present case, the number of station A is 5 and consequently five pulses are transmitted from the agent's call device. When the agent's call device CD is deviated from normal, the caller bypass spring 283 closes and bypasses the trans- mitter and receiver, which closes a direct circuit for line relay 230 and during normalization the pulse spring 277 interrupts five times the circuit of relay 230, Under 1 effect of each interruption in its circuit, relay 230 energizes a corresponding number of times and for each de-operation relay 230 transmits an earth pulse to operate magnet 105 as follows:

     earth by armature 242, armature 245, normally closed springs commanded by armature 253, normally closed springs commanded by armature 234, common conductor. of pulses 175, the armature 124 and the rolling year of the magnet 105 towards the battery. By the operation of the magnet 105, the trotters of the junction line finder are actuated by saooades towards the line of the station A, Whenever the line relay 230 de-energizes, this relay closes, with the springs normally closed controlled by armature 253, a short circuit around relay 228 so as to make this relay slow to release during pulses, and to armature 254 it transmits a current pulse to excite the slow relay to release 227.

   In the armature 243, the relay 227 prepares a circuit to operate the combined output and bell relay 226; at armature 244 it maintains earth on the pulse circuit independently of armature 242 in the event that relay 226 is actuated while trotter 102 passes over earthed contacts; with reinforcements 248 and 249, it

 <Desc / Clms Page number 29>

 opens the conversation leads extending to the connection leads 170 and 171 to prevent the main office subscriber from hearing the dial pulses.

   The rest of the operation then depends on the question of whether the line from station A is busy or free If the line from station A is busy, ivy on conductor 89 encountered by test wiper 102 forces the relay 226 to be excited by the following oirouit: from the oon .. earthed tor 89, by the test wiper 102, the working contact of the armature 120 and this armature, the oon .. duotor d common test 176, armature 243 and its working contact and by winding relay 226 to the battery.

  Relay 226 opens to armature 239 a point in the circuit of interrupt relay 224; at armature 240, it opens a point in the circuit of switching relay'225; at armature 242 it removes the earth from the pulse circuit and at armature 241 it closes a latch circuit for itself enclosing the grounded test conductor 176 and the ar- mature 237. After a short period of time, slow-acting relay 227 de-energizes and at armature 243 and its normally closed contact, it prepares a point in the circuit of switching relay 225.

   The agent is informed that the line of extension A is busy because the monitoring lamp 204 does not come on. The agent then informs the main office subscriber that line A is busy and if the main office subscriber wishes to wait, the agent can do so. When the called line becomes free, the earth is removed from conductor 89 and from test wiper 102, which causes relay 226 to de-energize. Relay 226 completes the armature 241 with a circuit for energizing. the switching / switching relay 225

 <Desc / Clms Page number 30>

 and to armature 242 it again applies earth for the pulse circuit.

   The circuit to energize the switching relay .225 can be traced as follows: earth through armature 246, upper winding of relay 225, armature 240, rest contact of armature 243 and this armature, conductor 176, armature 120, test slider 102, conductor 89 and through the lower winding of the interrupt relay '4 and resistor R to the battery.

  The switching relay 225 disconnects, by energizing, at the frame 234, the conductor 175 of the relay 228 and substitutes the battery by the resistor 233 for the battery by the magnet 105; at armature 235 it completes a circuit for switching relay 109; at armature 236 it prepares the bell circuit and a circuit for the bell interrupt relay 224; at the armature 237 it oonneotes the earth to the conductor 176 so that the called line is occupied when it is tested and to fully operate the interrupt relay 4; to the frame 238 it is locked by its winding below the earth at the location of the frame 250.

   In the TC trunk line circuit, Fig. 2, the switching relay 109 is energized by the following circuit: from ground to armature 235 by common switch-on conductor 174, armature 122. And winding of the switching on relay 109 towards the battery. By energizing, the relay 109 prepares the armatures 127 and 128 a point in the conversation circuit; at armature 129 it prepares a point in the circuit to ground the test wiper 102 after the relay 106 drops out; at the armature 130 it establishes the locking with the local release conductor 183 earthed;

   at the armature 132, it opens a point in the return circuit of the magnet 105; at armature-133 he prepares a return circuit through the earth to ring the line '--pelée; to the arma-

 <Desc / Clms Page number 31>

 ture 134 it completes a circuit to ignite the monitoring lamp 204 and at armature 135 it opens a new point in the circuit of the starter relay 110.

   The circuit for turning on the monitoring lamp can be traced as follows: from earth through disconnect conductor 180, armature 45, armature 134, armature 165, monitoring conductor 182, monitoring lamp monitoring 204, conductor 261, spring assembly 213 and the coil of relay 207 to the battery. By switching on the monitoring lamp 204, the attendant is informed that the called line is now free and therefore rings the called line by means of the dial.

   Under the effect of the operation of the call device CD, the relay 230 is again actuated intermittently and again causes the relay 227 to be energized.

  By operating, the relay 227 energizes at the armature 243 the relay 226 by means of the following circuit: the earth by 'the working contact of the armature 237 and this armature, the armature 243 and its make contact and the winding of relay 226 to the battery. To the armature 239, the relay 226 connects the generator GEN to the called line by means of the following circuit:

   of the generator GEN by the working contact of the matured arm 239 and this armature, the armature 236, the common ringing conductor 172, the working contact of the armature 118 and this armature, the wiper 100, the conductor 1, by the ringing of the station and the capacitor of line A, the oon- duotor 2, the wiper 101, the armature 119 and its working contact, the working contact of the armature 133 and this armature, to the grounded disconnect conductor 180.

  Shortly after the dial tone pulses cease, slow wave relay 227 de-energizes and opens the circuit of relay 226 which de-energizes as a result. By de-exiting, the relay 226 prepares the armature 239 a circuit for

 energize ring interrupt relay 224 when called line answers. If the called line does not answer immediately, the attendant can ring again using the dial and ring as often as needed.

   When subscriber A answers during a period of silence, a direct current bridge is substituted for the capacitor and the bell, and therefore the bell interrupt relay 224 is energized by means of its upper winding and from the bell circuit as previously traced to the grounded disconnect conductor 180.

   Relay 224, when energized, opens at armature 231 the circuit of relay 106 and at armature 232 closes a latch circuit through its lower winding to grounded armature 250. - The relay 106 opens, by de-energizing, at the working contacts of the armatures 118 and 119, the ringing circuit, and at the rear oontaots of these it completes the conversation circuit and completes a circuit of excitation for relay 111; to the frame 120 it connects the grounded frame 129 to the test wiper 102.

   The circuit for energizing relay 111 can be traced as follows: main office earth, conductor '171, armature 146 and its make contact, armature 128, rest contact of armature 119 and this armature, the wiper 101, the conductor 2, by the receiver and the transmitter at the station called A, the conductor 1, the wiper 100, the armature 118 and its rest contact, the armature 127, the winding from relay 111, conductor 170, to the battery in the main office.

  This battery and the ground connection to the main office are provided through the so-called rear bridge relay windings in the connector switch.

  At armature 140, relay-111 closes a circuit to energize relay 112 by its two serial windings At armature 145, relay 112 opens the relay latch circuit

 <Desc / Clms Page number 33>

 116 and also opens the circuit of the monitoring lamp 204. The relay 116, by de-operating, opens at the armature 158 the circuit of the response lamp 204 - and also causes the relay 207 to de-energize.

   The operation which takes place in the case where the line is free when it is called at the start is the same as that which has just been described, except that in this case the busy relay 226 is not energized from the busy line and the monitoring lamp is operating under the operation of the on relay 109, which informs the attendant that the line is free. The operation from this point is the same as described above.

   After the called subscriber has answered, the agent can free himself from the call by first returning the answer key AK to normal and then returning the device to the cradle. By returning the AK key to normal, the earth at the springs 205 is replaced by the earth at the springs 201 by means of springs which close before breaking, controlled by springs 216. At the springs 219, the circuit of the action relay slow 229 is open, after which this relay releases and at springs 220 and 221, the talk circuit to the attendant is opened. At the springs 219, the circuit for the shaker 222 is again closed in the event that the attendant has not activated another junction key in the meantime.

  The relay 219 opens, by de-energizing, at armature 250 the locking circuit of relays '224' and 225 and at armatures 251 and 252 it opens another point in the conversation circuit to the attendant's telephone set. Under the effect of placing the device on the cradle, the springs 201 and 202 are actuated and the springs 202 open the circuit of the line relay 230 in the common group of junction relays. line relay 230 opens and puts

 <Desc / Clms Page number 34>

 short-circuited relay 228 which then de-energizes. Relay 227 is momentarily actuated at this time with no effect.

   The agent's equipment and the relays of the common trunk relay group are then in the normal position and can be used for other calls.

   The subscriber of the main office and the subscriber A can then converse as they wish, the conversation building being supplied from the main office.

   While the main office subscriber is connected to subscriber A, the main office subscriber can inform subscriber A that a call to another local subscriber is desired. In this case it will be assumed that the subscriber of the main office now wishes to converse with subscriber A ', and consequently subscriber A will cause the attendant to flicker by lowering the rocket switch at intervals. When subscriber A lowers the hook-switch, the circuit for relay 111 is opened and therefore this relay de-energizes.

   Relay 111 opens the circuit of relay 112 which thus de-energizes and armature 145 closes a circuit to actuate monitor lamp 204 and relay 207 to operate the shaker as previously described. By intermittent actuation of the hook switch at station A, the relays 111 and 112 are actuated intermittently to flicker the surveillance lamp 204 to draw the attendant's attention to that call. When the attendant notices the flickering of the monitoring lamp 204, he removes the apparatus from the cradle again and activates the AK answer key again. Upon removal of the apparatus from its cradle, line and release relays 230 and 228 are actuated respectively.

   By the operation of the answer key, the relay 229 is again energized and the pre ose is again connected in the trunk line. The subscriber of

 <Desc / Clms Page number 35>

 main office or subscriber A informs the agent that the subscriber of the main office wishes to exchange with subscriber A ', after which subscriber A replaces his receiver on the telephone. The attendant momentarily lowers the cradle springs of the apparatus which separates the springs 201 and 202 from their switching contacts. With the response key AK in the actuated position and energizing the springs 201 and 202, the springs 201 therefore remove the earth from the interlocking inverter 183, causing the relay 109 to de-energize.

   By de-energizing, relay 109 opens the circuit of relay 111 to armature 127; at reinforcements 127 and 128 it opens a point in the conversation circuit; at armature 129 he removes the earth from the wiper 102; at armature 132 it short-circuits the upper winding of relay 106 and prepares the automatic interruption circuit for magnet 105; at armature 133 it closes a hole to energize relay 116 and at armature 134 it opens a point in the circuit extending to monitor lamp 204. Relays 111 and 112 therefore de-energize.

   The circuit for energizing relay 116 can be traced as follows: from earth through the grounded disconnect conductor 180, armature 133 and its normally closed contact, armature 164 and through the lower winding of relay 116 towards the battery. Relay 116 closes a circuit to armature 158 to turn on response lamp 203.

   Under the effect of the ignition of the response lamp 203, the attendant releases the beroeau springs, which causes the springs 201 and 202 to engage their working contacts. At the springs 201, the circuit is completed for the feed magnet 105 of the junction line finder in order to force the junction line oheroheur back to its return position as explained above. -

 <Desc / Clms Page number 36>

 oedently.

   After the trunk line finder returns to its recall position, the attendant dials the telephone number of the line for station A 'and the trunk line finder is operated as described above. te previously to engage with the fourth series of fixed contacts in which the line of station A 'ends. From this moment, the operation is the same as explained for the communications completed to station A.

   After the conversation and in the event that the subscriber in the main office replaces his receiver first, all the switches are released except the connector in the main office. The main office connector is of the well-known last-party release type and therefore keeps the trunk line busy until the P.A.X. or the local subscriber hangs up his receiver.

  When subscriber A ′ or A, as the case may be, replaces his receiver, the circuit of relay 111 is open and this relay de-coaches consequently. At armature 140, relay 111 opens the circuit of relay 112 and this relay de-energizes and actuates the monitoring lamp 204 and the shaker, since in the meantime the attendant has released the key AK. Under the effect of this signal, the attendant activates the release key RK, which removes the earth from conductors 180 and 183 and causes de-operation of relays 109 and 117. Relay 109, when disconnected, withdraws from 'armature 129 earth of the test wiper 102 and conductor 77.

   Relay 117 is made slow-acting so as to ensure the release of relay 109 before relay 117 can free itself and connect the earth to its rest contact, at the location of armature 161. By de-energizing , the relay 117 removes the short-circuit around the resistors 155 and 156 from the armature 160, which forces the relay to

 <Desc / Clms Page number 37>

 rear deck of the main office motor to return to the normal position. The main office connector therefore becomes free in the event that the main office subscriber has replaced his receiver and by this release the connector opens the circuit of relay 115 which consequently de-energizes as well. At the armature 156, the relay 115 opens the oirouit of the slow wave relay 114.

   Relay 114 de-energizes and opens the circuit from relay 113 to armature 150.

  When the relay 113 returns to its normal position ,. the trunk line finder and trunk circuit are made available for use for further calls. In the event that the P.A.X. emerges first, the relays. @ 111 and 112 de-use which activates the monitoring lamp 204 and the shaker 222. The attendant then activates the release key BK and releases the local call as previously described.

   The rear bridge relay in the connector is also deenergized and as soon as the main office subscriber replaces his receiver, all the switches in the main office are released in the well-known manner. after the above description that if during the operation of establishing a call another call arrives, the agent can disengage himself from the first call and take care of the second call by returning to normal the answer key of this jonotion line and in action;,; nant the answer key from the other link line. After completing the second call, the agent can return to the first call and complete this desired communication.

   After having deorit the incoming and outgoing local calls, we will now describe the operation which occurs when the P.A.X. calls the attendant's post. For this purpose, it will be assumed that station A wishes to call the station of

 <Desc / Clms Page number 38>

 attendant. The attendant has received, as it should be noted, a local telephone number which, in this case, is the number assigned to line 9 which ends in the ninth fixed contact accessible to connector walkers. 71, 72 and 73.

   Under the effect of the removal of the receiver at station A, the finder F is actuated in the same way as described above to search for the calling line, after which subscriber A forms the number 9 on the dial, which actuates the wipers of connector 0 to engage with the ninth series of fixed contacts in which the conductors 90, 91 and 93 terminate. The switching relay 22 is energized by the following circuit: from earth via the lower winding of the relay 22, the armature 58, the armature 45, the rest contact of the armature 51 and this armature, the armature 29, the wiper 73, the ninth fixed contact, the driver 93 and by the left winding of the interrupt relay 97 from the attendant to the battery.

   When the switching relay 22 is energized, this relay connects, at the location of the armature 64, the direct earth to the attendant's interrupt relay, which causes the complete operation of this relay. interruption. Subscriber A then rings the attendant dial by means of the dial, which causes ringing 282 to operate at the attendant's station. The ringing circuit extends from the generator GEN to the armature 57, through the wiper 71, the conductor 91, through the ringer 282, the conductor 90, the wiper 72 towards the earth at the armature 54. Under the effect of the operation of the bell 282, the attendant activates the line key LK which directly connects his set to the conduc- tors 90 and 91 as soon as he removes the apparatus from its cradle.

  As soon as the attendant removes the device from its cradle, a direct current bridge is closed between conductors 90 and 91, after which relay 20 of connector 0 energizes and completes

 <Desc / Clms Page number 39>

 the conversation circuit. Both agent and subscriber A receive their conversation circuit from relay 17. The agent can disconnect from the trunk line circuit by reverting the AK key to normal in order to answer calls from the trunk. junction and monitor them, and it can then return to local communication by simply pressing the LK key. After the conversation, the communication release is the same as described above.

   The agent can also start a call using the local connector searcher strings by removing the device from its cradle and activating the LK line key.

  This actuation causes the operation of the common line relay LR and this activates a free chain of connector searcher to search for the attendant's line. The attendant's interrupt relay 97 is actuated in its first. d phase in series with the common line relay LR, and it is activated in its second phase when the researcher F finds the line of the attendant. The attendant then activates the call device in accordance with the number of the desired called line and connector 0 is activated to complete the call, after which the attendant rings with the radio in the usual way. .

   As in a system of this size the attendant is only on duty during certain hours of the day, some kind of service should be provided for in the event that one of the local subscribers wishes to work after hours and still be able to receive and initiate incoming and outgoing calls with the main office: In such a case, - the local subscriber informs the agent that he wishes his line to be established for night service, or instead of similar special instructions, a certain local service line may always be designated for the service of

 <Desc / Clms Page number 40>

 night and the attendant will therefore prepare this line for night duty before leaving his post.

   Before the attendant leaves his station, he removes his device and activates the answer key associated with the trunk line before being used for night service, and he listens in the trunk line to determine if the trunk line is busy. If this is free, the attendant activates the night key NK in order to take the trunk line into service.

   Under the effect of the operation of the response key AK, the relays 228, 229 and 230 are energized as described above and under the effect of the operation of the night key NK a circuit is closed. to energize relay 115 and to earth the night service control conductor 179. The circuit for energizing relay 115 can be traced as follows: earth through resistors 209 and 210, the spring working contact 211 and this spring, the spring 220 and its working contact, the conductor 184, the winding of the relay 115, the armature 141, the conductor 170, to the battery through the line relay of the switching. main office line operator.

   The main office line relay is not energized by the circuit traced above due to the high resistance of resistors 209 and 210 and relay 115. Relay 115, on the contrary, is energized in the circuit traced. above and at armature 156 it again causes the operation of relay 114. Relay 114 again causes the operation of relay 113 and at armature 153 it closes a circuit to energize relay 117, circuit which can be traced as follows: grounded cradle springs 201, par. springs' 217, conductor 267, armature 231, conductor 173, armature 153, to the lower coil of relay 117 and to the battery.

   The relay 117 in turn closes the armature 162 the circuit for

 <Desc / Clms Page number 41>

 return the jonotion line finder to its normal position, and at armature 164 it closes a circuit to energize relay 116 by means of the grounded disconnect conductor 180 and armature 133 as indicated Previously At armature 158, relay 116 closes a circuit to turn on response lamp 203 in the same manner as previously described.

   After the trunk line oheroheur has returned to its normal position, relay 106 is energized in the same way as described previously, after which the attendant dials the number of the participant to be connected for the night servioe In case the line is free, the switching relay 225 is energized when the trunking line finder slider takes the called subscriber's line into service and closes the circuit to energize the switch-on relay 109 in the jonotion line finder.

   The reset relay 109 automatically energizes and locks itself to the night service control conductor 179, grounded. The operation of relay 109 also closes a circuit to turn on the surveillance lamp 204. By switching on the surveillance light, the attendant knows that the line from station A is now prepared for night service and as no means are provided for the agent to speak on this line established for night service, the agent can ring this subscriber according to a code so as to inform him that his line is now switched on for the service by night. After that, the attendant returns the AK answer key to normal and returns the device to its cradle.

   The common OTR control relays are returned to their normal position in the same way as previously described and relay 106 of the junction line finder also de-energizes and oom-

 <Desc / Clms Page number 42>

 , flat a direct circuit from the line from station A to the main office. The relay 106, by de-energizing, connects directly at the location of the armature 120 the earth of the armature 129 to the test wiper 102 so as to make occupied for other local lines the line established for the service of night. In this way it can be seen that the line prepared for night service can be called from the main office and can make calls in the main office but cannot complete any local communication.

   Under the effect of the return of the response key AK to its normal position, the circuit of the response and monitoring lamps 203 and 204 is opened and therefore the lamps are extinguished.

   Subscriber A can then receive and make calls in the main office. In order to make a call in the main office, subscriber A simply removes his receiver and listens to hear the dial maneuvering sound coming from the main office and after receiving it he dials the telephone number of the dial. subscriber of the main office without preceding it with the number "0", because his line is now in direct connection with the main office.

  The operation of the switches in the main office is easily understood and does not need to be explained.

   Calls to subscriber A from the main office are completed to the line at station A by means of conductors 170 and 171 in the ordinary way since this station is now connected in the same way as any other. main office subscriber. It is possible for other local subscribers to make outgoing calls to the main office by means of the other trunk circuit (not shown), but an incoming call cannot be completed by means of this trunk line. the attendant has left his post.
