Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

  Process for liquefying and reotifioation of air and physically analogous gases The invention relates to a process for treating air in which the air is liquefied and rectified by it. view, of the separation of its constituent elements (oxygen and auote).

  ¯ ¯ This process makes it possible to obtain said separation under particularly advantageous conditions as will emerge during the description which follows.

   In order to facilitate the understanding of the general treatment process, to which according to the present invention the air is subjected, the accompanying drawings show in a very schematic manner the arrangements used to carry out the process.

   On his drawings
Fig. 1.represents the combination of organs' or

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 of apparatus in! ployed to carry out the first operational phase, this first phase oonsistant in the liquefaction of the air.

   Fig. 2 shows how, in order to follow the liquefaction of the air by a rectification of this gas, (rectification constituting the second operating phase) are combined the liquefaction organs or devices with those producing the rectification.

   Fig. 3 indicates an operating variant according to which the separated oxygen is obtained at. liquid state.

   The inventor knows that there are currently many devices used for. Defend the air. In all these devices, the gases, returning in counter-current in the exchangers, forgive these organs with a loss of weight, compared to. that of the compressed gases from which they are derived, equal to the whole liquefied quantity from which they have been separated.

   This circumstance decreases the quantity of cold which can be restored to the compressed gas and it has been shown that, by properly using the set of specific heats, it was possible to fill part of the deficit thus created, in a region where the temperature is high enough. high so that we can introduce auxiliary frigories obtained almost free of charge by means of a liquefied gas machine, ammonia for example.

   In fact, in certain high power appliances, at 7 frigories per kilog. air produced by internal expansion, a price of 78 gross frigories per horsepower, we have managed to add 3.5 frigories almost free which increases the gross refrigerating efficiency of the whole, that is to say counted outside heat exchanger losses, at more than 110 frigories per compression horse.

   While, up to now, researchers have set themselves' The goal, with varying success, of painfully improving systems using mainly as refrigeration means, the expansion of the air with production of external work, and this by increasing the inlet temperature, at the expansion valve at the cost, most of the time, of a loss of cold, at the exchanger,

   It is this fortunate circumstance which has kept the device in question in use.

   Later, attempts were made to use the circuit of the liquefaction device for rectification.

   But, if the column benefits from the use of a gas, the compression and purification of which have already been carried out for the purposes of the liquefaction, the economic efficiency of the liquefaction engine was lowered for various well-known reasons, which it would be too long to list, so much so that the inventor of this combination tried to increase performance by using the motive force of his regulator to raise the pressure of the portion of air sent to the liquefier. liquefying machine. By this means, the efficiency of the latter is only partially increased and the recovered driving force is lost for another use.

   Need to separately compress all of the air to. rectify, or lowering the output of the machine. liquefying, these are the two faults that always presents the combination of this apparatus with a rectifier group.

   In certain liquefying machines, the relaxed circuit with external work, up to atmospheric pressure, cannot even give the benefit of the purification of the air which passes through it Pt which could '- at a pinch, be rectified at this pressure, paroe that, the expansion taking place overheating and giving, according to a person skilled in the art, an escape at -150, the air thus relaxed would constitute, for the column, a supply of heat and non dei froid We would be in the step of the above-mentioned apparatus, in which the ammonia machine would be used, with a liquid boiling at -50, to cool a column operating at -190, approximately.

   Same difficulty with other 'engineered in which the relaxed circuit and constituting the 5 / compressed air escapes from the regulator between -150 and -160 approximately. This is. in sum, one of the aforementioned devices, in which the liquefier is placed on a separate circuit so that it is possible to bring it to a pressure higher than that

 of the relaxation circuit. It was indicated above how we

 had already realized this artifice.

   We therefore see that the air, evacuated under pressure, from the, liquefying machine, cannot even be u-bîligé to * reo-blfl42àcte =, s, "it does not meet certain temperature conditions <,

 at 5 or 6 atm., cooled and purified, provides an excess of liquid nitrogen over the amount required for rectification, in column 19. of the rich liquid obtained at the bottom of column 17.

   The excess amount is always sufficient to downshift the air coming from the regulator and representing only about 4 of the total air to be rectified. If the excess liquid nitrogen is greater than the indicated requirement, a corresponding quantity of pressurized, purified and cooled air can still be sent to the same point of column 19 in the exchanger accompanying the column, the volume will be measured by compressor 22.

   It is easy to see that the described process leaves the exchangers of the liquid air machine without ¯ backflow, which cannot be allowed, but it will be ¯ easy to restore the suitable backflow by means of a part of the gaseous nitrogen leaving the column 19, suitably measured by the distributor valve 20, and directed to the bottom of the liquefier 5, from where it will pass to the exchanger 3 to be finally discharged into the atmosphere or collected in a gasometer.

     The use, in column 19, of the exhaust from the regulator 9 will be possible because the expansion will take place in a wet regime.

   In short, the general process which has just been described has the following characteristics:
Regarding the "liquefaction" phase. whereas one seeks, in general, to increase the cooling efficiency of the expansion units, by compression horsepower and that one avoids the help of any source of: extraneous cold, apart from one of the processes aotuels which makes only a limited appeal this means, it is made here. on the contrary, the main means, end intensifying the refrigerating efficiency per kilogram. compressed air.

If this artifice is not sufficient, we will have to resolve to. a very slight decrease in the efficiency of the liquid air machine, and admit, to the regulator 9, air at a slightly higher pressure, 80 atm. for example, in order to be able to raise, at 6 atm.
